I don't like it. Everything looks way bigger than it should be on my 13in screen... especially the ads. Turning Adblock back on makes the site a bit weird(er than it already is).

If they meant to force the new layout on me last night, I think I've been left behind! Long may that last.

I won't use this site if the new layout becomes compulsory.

I don't appreciate being dumped onto the new layout without me selecting it.

I'll stick with my dark blue layout, thank you very much.

Feels very slow to load posts.
Don't like the body layout. Made me move back from the desk so I could see wtf I was reading.
I do like the top menu though.

can we get a poll going to see if it yay or nay on the new layout?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,900 ✭✭✭InTheTrees

    Oh my god...

I'm not a fan. Why doesnt the width increase when i increase the width of my window???

Its narrow and tall with a lot of empty space, so there's far more scrolling.

    Really!

I tried using it today, and approached it with an open mind in spite of the previous comments. In sum: it's a steaming pile of horse crap. Completely un-intuitive, fisher price type face and over intrusive adds.

    Out ta f*ck!

I appreciate that change has to happen, but for something like this it has to be gradual or people will just move on. Look at facebooks updates for example, there is never any huge wholesale change, just minor ongoing tweaks that people can get used to.

I spent ages writing out these responses in the feedback section but now realise that the thread was started by a random user and its unlikely that anybody is paying attention to it.
Firstly, every user who comes here does so with the intention of reading about a topic and viewing posts. after that they may contribute by thanking the post or replying to a post. However the design of the posts in beta dont draw attention to the post content. The time & username are given an equal prominence to the post content, and the "quote", "report" and "thank" buttons are larger than the post fonts too. This distracts the user from the post content - you are trying to shove features in their face but the result is that the user is going to be distracted away from the actual content of the post and less engaged, less likely to keep reading and less likely to stick around.

Secondly, I get that you are trying to introduce a colour scheme for each category or whatever, but I think this execution has been poor. It works for google where they have 5 colours, but you have introduced so many that After Hours has almost the same colour as Accomodation and Property (which could be confusing) and forums like "Bands" and "Electric Vehicles" have really horrible shades of brown (which looks crap, esp against the overall blue theme). Having this colour scheme also permeate throughout the forum view via font colours also gives the whole site a really inconsistent feel. A more subtle strip over or under the horizontal top menu a left border on the posts would achieve the same result but be less intrusive and keep the reading experience consistent.

Also, I don't like the fact that posts are standalone, in bubbles with rounded edges. Takes away the "conversation" feel and looks more like a classified website. I don't like the rounded edges at all tbh, except on buttons which look fine.
Another point on this - when browsing a forum, the "Last post" and "Most recent poster" are highlighted using the forums colour scheme.

What was the thinking behind this? When the user is scrolling down a page they are scanning the thread titles, which are plain black and less prominent than the "Last Post" and "Last Poster". Surely you want to give more prominence to the content the user is looking for? How many people ever want to read the "Last post" anyway, surely this should at least be linking to the "First Unread" if anything. Why is the "Last poster" given more prominence than the thread title - who ever read a thread topic like "What is on your bucket list?" and said "This might be interesting, I better go check the user profile of the person who posted in this thread last"

TL;DR I get the impression that posting in this thread and also over on the feedback thread is as effective as Tom Hanks in Castaway complaining to Wilson that the food is running low

Normal layout on most forums for me, but new layout on one or two, very annoying to have a different layout depending on which forum I go to.

Oh, and the new one is absolutely terrible, go to first unread post doesn't work, links don't work and it looks terrible

This is such a fundamental feature - it is crazy to think it is being overlooked

    It's absolutely awful.
There's no "page 2" of the latest threads, for instance, whereas there's three pages currently.

It looks like it was lazily designed for an app and just copy and pasted for the main site.

I'm still using the original boards layout in blue even on mobile I use the old desktop version so I've no idea what the new one even looks like.

Poll going less than half an hour and 97.06% of people say no...

    I switched back to legacy.....

I do feel bad because I know someone spent a lot of time making that new layout etc but yeah..... it's not for me.

Only problem is, in a few weeks time you won't have that choice, new look boards will be the only boards!

Have to say I'd potentially say goodbye to the site. Can't be dealing with that layout.

Thanks for adding the poll, jaysus 97.73% against is fairly damning alright. I hope that delays any changeover until there is a serious rethink on the user experience of this new launch.

Oh God no. Bulky bubble size posts with less information and even more and bigger ads. Put it back, please.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,779 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

    Also:

Quoted post first, then the actual post and reply. Natural order. Why would I want to read a reply before I've read the argument that said poster is replying to??

It isn't being overlooked. It's automatic when you click on the thread title!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭maudgonner

Way too much blank space on the page, they seem to be twice as long as they are on the "legacy site".

I don't mind there being more ads per page, I understand the reason for it. But the actual post/thread content could be much denser.

    You'd hope.
But generally they just ignore the userbase and push through changes.
