I don't get the need for it, the mobile site was pretty decent and if they added a few features like advanced search would have been completely usable.

I accidentally had the beta site come up earlier on my phone. There's far too much padding and white space. On 40 posts per page, I'm scrolling enough already! It's less and less like a discussion forum Boards is becoming tbh. I don't know what this latest effort is about or who it's aimed at.

I hada get smelling salts from the Chemists.
    Still not right.

where is this turn beta off button??

There should be a legacy site button on the upper right.

Touch the Boards sign,it's on the bottom of the page titled "Legacy Site".

Doesn't work on mobile, probably tweaks needed.

I am sorry if this offends but the reason why these changes happen is because people are employed to "develop" the site. If they leave it the same then maybe you don't need developers.

If Boards do a "g mail" & make it compulsory then it will show their total disregard for the people that make this site so amazing.

According to their announcement the present site is being kept for a few months after the launch of the new site in a few weeks.Like it or go whistle after that.
Don't mind it that much, but as I say it's a disaster on mobile.

If it was just a new look, it would be fine. We'd adjust to the ugliness. It's not though - it's counter-intuitive, less functional, there's too much wasted space and it all just makes for a wholly irritating user experience. I hope they can somehow find a way of retaining existing functionality - the little things like being able to search for 'who quoted my posts', hover over a thread title and see what it's about, etc. Otherwise Boards will very quickly die.

bejaysus and there was me thinking it was all about the user experience when its actually about keeping people in employment

Not a fan... stuck a post in Feedback about it last week and it was ignored - unless it's a bug or a minor tweak it seems that opinions aren't wanted. This is happening regardless.

Is it just me here or is the Announcement post now defaulting to the new layout as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

Am actually having difficulty finding the development/feedback forums in this new layout. Want to try it out, but might have to go back to the old layout just to find particular forums.

I seen the sneak preview all-white screen layout while using an iMac in college when not logged in during lunchtime today and it looked like utter ****e. When I clicked on the home page or the forum page; it didn't show any threads whatsoever. Not only that when I was looking at the top end of the site during the lunch; each tab above had only 4 topics pages on each one to make me suggest that the rollout of the new site has been a ****ing joke & utterly embarrassing.

I looked at the beta site with my 40 posts a page settings a few minutes ago. I had enough of that beta site tbh. It's taking way too long to read all the posts in one page with the beta site. Currently; it's a definite waste of my time.

The current look is so much better to use & it has a purpose to be functional website. Please don't get rid of it.

Much prefer the current design but if it is going to be forced on us all i ask is a dark mode cus i cannot stare at all that ugly white space

According to the other thread it has been years in development. It's not pleasant being critical of someone's work but it's better than lying.

I'm genuinely suprised it's been years in development. How did they get it so wrong if they had all that time? I know that sounds harsh but it's a genuine question.

Maybe they don't think that it's wrong.

Maybe not, you're right. It would make them pretty out of touch with the userbase though.

There were previous feedback threads about this new design and it got the same bad feedback. All the threads were deleted and they progressed with the redesign regardless.

Well, that says it all really.

I have a feeling that saying about reaping and sowing is going to be pertinent after this is forced on users.

Am I the only one who likes it? But you do need adblock because the new layout is pretty much unstable without adblock because of the flashy ads

Adblock takes away functions like follow thread/forum.

I used that skin for about 2 days during the responsive testing last june/July. Wasn't particlurly good then. I haven't seen much improvement since. Basic UI is way off from a visual perspective, before you even get into usability.

I get they are trying to offload from vbulletin, but this is not how they should do it.

Because the work involved with effectively from scratch creating a new online forum software/platform is a herculean task(never mind keeping it running across new and old databases in real time). I have serious levels of respect and admiration for the folks who worked on this. That should really go without saying. Something like Reddit is almost late 90's geek in layout(some like that of course. Then again some of the odder nerds out there miss DOS…). Indeed, with tweaks (more than a few tweaks to the front end IMH) this could actually be a little money spinner for Boards. Vbulletin is brilliant, but a choice for forums out there is always a good thing.

Again the level of work and the result considering the size of the team involved is bloody amazing.

That is not the issue. It all goes a bit Pete Tong at the front end. It's like a halfway house between desk and mobile. There's not that much in it, but it does need tweaking. If it Boards were a car; the old layout had bad shocks, the engine was smoky as fcuk with little power, but the outside looked pretty good and the dashboard had all the buttons where you expected them and within reach. The topics tweak made the user have to dig around to find the windscreen wipers. This new Beta? Fantastic engine, great suspension and chassis, but the body is more style than substance and the dashboard is a bloody mess. Really obvious shizzle like the asterix beside new posts on subbed forums. How did that get missed? Or maybe I've a borked version? EDIT I don't have adblock running.

Yeah, that was a bit odd alright. When users, the content generators within the community, start to drift away there is a tipping point beyond which recovery is almost impossible. Such stresses are often little things. The Close account option, though legally required because of stupid Irish law, was a little one. It made your account, you, less "valuable"*. The category change another which made navigation a little more longwinded and I've seen a few forums wither since that came in. Forget readers and lurkers at your peril. Things like the Hack and the recent ddos attack are bigger stressors. This Beta may be one of them. I sadly suspect it will. I did think the mobile users would care less(I'm old, so desktop to the end :)), but they seem to have issues too. I dunno, we'll see in a year.

    * It also increased the tantrum flounce off types who barely let their keyboards go cold before they've a new account, posting the same stuff. Rinse and repeat.

Oh thank God I found that old former option. Was not coming up all day on the iPad.

It's not so much for me, I was worried that others would miss the benefit of my opinions.

I believe feedback for redesigns is always negative so they're really just looking for bugs and missing features, and no one opts to turn on beta so you've to force it on people and weather the storm.

That being said, I find it a f*cking disaster. Lots of stuff I clicked didn't work the way I expected to, certain parts shunted me from mobile view into desktop view too. I kept accidentally going into the most recent poster's profile instead of the thread and I seemed to only have the options of going to the first post or the most recent one.
It's a bad sign when I genuinely feel like I could do a better job! I assume it wasn't developed by people who use the site much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

I understand the logic behind the redesign but the implementation is a disaster. This site survives because of the content generated by its users. This layout makes it more difficult to get to the forums you use and then to read the content. I think someone has said this already but I will restate it. The whole design seems to have been generated around adspace and not the actual content people want to read. Major thumbs down from me, the development team obviously didn't bother to listen to the user concerns from early interactions.

The new site should be considered a professional embarrassment to anyone involved in its design.
I don't care how much hard work went into it, if you're paid to do something you should do a good job. This is not.
