You'd wish the guy a lot of luck in the future at whatever he does now. He just seems like a guy that pushed it as far as he could but ultimately had the gumption to walk away before it was too late.

The big problem is the speed in the game these days. It's just unnatural to be able to do things as fast as they are done nowadays and the injuries are only going to get worse as a result. The efforts from the NFL by penalising head hits is a good thing but more has to happen.

I think what needs to happen is a change in attitude towards peds. They just have to become unacceptable and the penalties for taking them have to make it not worth taking the chance.

One thing that always amazes me is the lack of tackle ability, a 200lb guy is running at you as the LB or S and what do you do? You try and head butt him

I never got the excitement over this. We already know who's playing who. Is the order of the games really something to make an event out of? Ok, report it when it's released but the way it is hyped up is pretty ridiculous.

You'd be plenty excited if you were planning a trip and you wanted to see when and where your team was playing before finalizing the flights etc.

yep, the schedule last year meant my trip didnt go ahead as my wife expected to be sitting in a frozen foxboro watching the titans get dismantled on Dec 22nd, if that was sept/oct we'd have went

I know that about planning trips etc and that's why I said reporting on the schedule being released is necessary but turn on NFL Network or ESPN tonight and there'll be analysis shows and 2 hour conversations on it. Over the top in my opinion.

Like to think we'll finally get kick off times for the Wembley games

It's a quite time of year on a 24 hour station dedicated to the sport. Of course it's going to be analysed. I don't think it gets any more analysed then they likes of the Premier League fixture release.

Its always good to see who the opening game is too. I would imagine either Pats/Texans for the Broncos.

How about the Panthers rematch of the super bowl in week 1, wouldn't mind if rivers and co get the first game against them

I think they've only ever done 1 AFC/NFC opener before. And for some reason divisional openers are pretty rate too. Maybe there's no real pattern though. I guess Indy could be a contender too, get the last of the Peyton Manning fawning out of the way in week 1 so we're done with it.

I think a lot of that is down to the importance of yards and inches - hearing some speak, it would seem like they consider it worse to tackle a bigger guy and drag him down over 4-5 yards than it is to miss the tackle altogether. Turning yourself into a human missile is a better way to stop them dead in their tracks. Fixing that would likely require tweaking the rulings on forward progress - and that's something the league would simply never, ever do I reckon.

With the opening day, people would watch pretty much anything, hence they usually hold off on Superbowl rematches or divisional games, they'll draw their own crowd. Once it's not a blowout either way, NFL will get their viewing figures and be happy.

Big trade. St Louis moves up to #1 in the draft. Good move for Tennessee.

Looks like it's Carolina @ Denver to open the season.

    Also, Percy Harvin has retired.

Like me, heading over to Arizona to see the Pats play. Only about 3 weekends I can't go, so I'm hoping the game is in mid October!!!

Yeah but you can just get the schedule, you don't need three hours of analysis.

A quick 30 second Google will probably do the job and give all the information needed.

Week 13 bye for the Titans seems odd and our usual Thursday game against the jags

Interesting note about the Rams trade.

In week 17 of last season the 49ers faced the Rams. The game went to overtime, the 49ers drive stalled and the Rams marched up the field and into FG range.

Zuerlein had his FG blocked, on the following drive the 49ers kicked the game winning FG.

Had that Zuerlein FG not been blocked the 49ers would have been picking 5th and the Rams 19th. Not sure how much difference that would have made to the trade, if Titans could have got more picks out of them or what but interesting to see the difference one play can make in a seemingly meaningless week 17 game.

Also that it makes a difference the wrong way. "Suck for luck" was a horrible slogan and the desire for your own team to lose shouldn't exist. I get that the players wanted to win as they are competitors but it has to be in the back of their mind that winning is a negative for the team for next season.

I know a lot of people here liked Undefeated (actually a lot of people everywhere liked it considering it won Best Documentary at the Oscars a few years back).

There's a similar documentary on Netflix called We Could Be King which I watched for the first time last night. It's very good and I'd highly recommend it.

Basically follows Martin Luther King high school in Philadelphia, which merged with their bitter rivals Germantown during the Doomsday Budget when 4000+ teaching staff were made redundant and 24 schools were shut down. The football team are coached by a former maths teacher from Germantown who lost his job and coaches on a purely voluntary basis. Really good documentary that strongly illustrates how important high school football can be in an inner-city when these kids really don't appear to have anything else and very few prospects.

Sounds good. Will give a watch over the weekend.

The 'Underdog' series on SI.com is well worth a look too if you're into this kind of thing. They're only about 15 mins long each but have some good stories.
