Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hello...! Are we still alive? How are ye all?

Ive found myself getting very distant from the world lately. walked away from alot of friends and rarely on snapchat as much, usually just ignore more snaps. just need to drop fb and i'll be doing great. Feel kinda happier just ignoring the world, working on my career

I've been busy with work and life and...ugh. Life has not been amazing for the last few weeks, lets put it that way?

  • Registered Users Posts: 818 ✭✭✭MauraTheThird

My phone is a terribly broken atm so I am ignoring a lot of social media stuff because it breaks my heart to look at my phone. Life is grand atm; I am just counting down the days to be done with college. I've not felt this unmotivated in a long time.

Plus point; haven't gotten too drunk in a long time so that's good. Have a internship sorted for next year so I am happy about this!

It's fine, if my FYP supervisor doesn't kill me on Thursday, my family will in a few weeks when I fail out of college and confirm that I've wasted six years trying to get an undergrad with no success... :P

That, and the fact that posting and modding have been feeling rather tedious for about a year now. Maybe longer. The fun is long gone. I think it's mostly in the private social forums these days instead of the wider site.

Mhm. I'm not a member of any private forums worth talking about (well, at least not any "social" ones), I find myself pretty much confined to 4 forums these days (Radio, UL, C&H and Podcasts), 1 of those is dead, 1 is barely alive, another is a small group posting in one or 2 threads, and the last is a shadow of what it was even a year ago, and some threads there are downright hostile at this point (namely the Ray D'Arcy thread in Radio which is a f*cking sh*tshow now).

I've even found myself drifting over to reddit recently, something which I wouldn't have considered a year ago...

A while back I was reading and posted a couple of times in the LW 252 thread (I'm a nerd, deal with it), ffs some people get so vicious over nothing.

Left the motors forum a long time ago, way too many people up on high horses.

K, this is spooky 'cos I was in literally the same situation last week.

Yeah like I'm too scared to even tailor my CV for it like I have a lot going for me re this job but like I'm sure I'm going to be against 100s of other applicants and mine could so easily slip through the cracks or worse yet not prove why I'd be so perfect :(

I think im finished with boards. im after checking out the responsive site. aka new boards and its just a disaster to my eyes too much boldness and multicolours. think had a chance to try it last year or something similar and gave up after a week. One way to lose viewers but the Irish are great at doing that anyway(dont fix it if it aint broken) Guess my retirement from boards has been a long time coming, less posting lack of interest. Its probably time i came off the grid for awhile. Focus on career

Yeah.. new site is not going well. Have gone back to 'Legacy site' on both phone and computer. Kept unfollowing me from threads. Come back to me when it's done. :P

I just didn't like the style of the new site. I like the current style I have (beta skin). I detest the current trend in web design of making everything so padded and fluffy looking.

I get they need to move away from vBulletin (the software the site runs on), but basically all I saw when I tried the new site was "WE WANT TO BE REDDIT! CAN WE BE REDDIT GUYS? PLEASE?!". If I wanted Reddit, I'd be on Reddit.

I'm sure it's what some people want, and I wish them the best with it, but I can see myself not hanging around long after the old styles are switched off.

Plus as I said previously, I'm posting way less now anyway, so I think it'll just be a gradual phase out as opposed to a dramatic "CLOSED ACCOUNT" tagline some day...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Jhcx

But even reddit is still the old style. small text hundreds of sections. just a mess. but it works. kinda relieved to see im not the only one on this page. a shame really but guess times change.

I both hate and like reddit.

I like the threaded comments because you'll see the best stuff fairly quickly.

But I hate the threaded comments because I feel it doesn't allow for long conversations like Boards does. I always feel if I get to a thread on reddit when there's like 100 comments already that there's no point posting anything other than a reply to someone, because it'll be all the way at the bottom and no one will see it.
On Boards, long conversations are way better (take threads in the TV forum as an example). You can track entire events chronologically, and jump in at any point and immediately be part of the conversation.

I also dislike the "karma" nature of everything. I think the fact that there's a trackable score that you can look at makes like-whoring par for the course on Reddit.

I dislike that every subreddit has its own style. I find that incredibly jarring when I'm browsing.

I got stupid and wistful this morning.

I currently pay €300/month in rent for a room in a 5 bed house in a pretty ****ty estate in Limerick.

For funzies, I looked for houses for sale on Daft. If I could secure a job that paid >€25,000 a year, I could buy a class 2 bed apartment in a really nice estate, and if I rented out the spare room I'd basically end up paying €250/month in mortgage repayments, and I'd own the place outright in 5 years.

It's odd how my priorities in life have gone from "How many cheap Steam games can I afford during this sale?!" to "I wanna buy property!" in the space of 12 months...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,068 ✭✭✭LoonyLovegood

I'm in Limerick and so far all I've done is go to Starbucks in the train station while waiting for a friend to finish work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

I'm in Limerick, and all I'm doing is sitting in my room trying to block out the neighbours who've been playing music at top volume in their back garden since 3pm yesterday.

    I need a job. :(

I had a dream....well I guess more so a nightmare about being back in secondary school. Just back talking to old classmates....kinda like a reunion I suppose. Its incredibly mad to think that at one time pretty much everyone my own age was doing the exact same thing as me at one point.....writing English essays, figuring out maths formulas, doing homework. Now weve all gone on to live such different lives. Even people from my year alone. Some have gone on to accomplish so much. Theres a girl doing medicine in trinity, another who has kids, another who studies/works in media and is essentially an almost mini celebrity, another is living in Australia....and its just insane to think back that once upon a time we were all the same. Same clothes (uniform) same day same in nearly every single way and yet Ill probably never see most of those girls again and weve all taken such a different course in life we'll never be the same again until were all 6 foot deep in the ground.

    Jusy random mumblings......

    Windows 10, a pile of utter sh*te.

    - No drivers for one of the audio things installed on my laptop.
    - My touchpad is no longer capable of one touch scrolling (common issue)
    - No drivers for the model of printer I have
    - Absolutely horrendous to use when you need to use a magnifier like I do. Searching from the start menu is nigh on impossible because it does something incredibly weird, and the zooming in and out shortcut will randomly stop working (which it never did on 7)

I didn't even WANT to "up"grade, I just wasn't paying attention two nights ago, and next thing I knew my laptop was shutting down and installing the update.

    Again: Pile o' sh*te.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,573 ✭✭✭pajor

I've made sure to take preventative measures to stop Windows 10 from installing.

History will judge Windows 7 kindly.

    I reverted to Windows 7.

Here's a cross post of my rant on Facebook on this topic because I can't be arsed retyping this:
    TL;DR of this diatribe: **** Windows 10.

So on Monday night, my laptop decided to upgrade to Windows 10. I, like a lot of people, have just been ignoring the notifications to update, more out of laziness than any particular aversion to trying it out. So, while I was slightly peeved that the process seemed to start without warning, I was willing to give it a go, and I had always intended to try out 10 eventually.

After using it for 2 days, my laptop is currently in the process of reverting to Windows 7. Why? Simple really. I rely on a magnifier to use computers with any degree of speed and efficiency. Zooming in and out quickly, colour inversion and decent cursor tracking are features which I rely on.

The state of play in Windows 10? The inbuilt magnifier stalls whenever I insert a USB device meaning I can no longer zoom in or out, the newly designed Start menu is flat out incompatible with inverted colours, Magnifier no longer tracks your selection when ALT+Tabbing through open programs (a pretty vital thing if you have as many incognito browser windows open as I do... wink emoticon ), and in general cursor tracking is all over the shop.

The issue of accessibility in software has been a major gripe of mine for many a year. Now, I'm well aware that there is no sure-fire solution to making an accessible piece of software or OS, but I HAVE to ask, did Microsoft consult ANY visually impaired users before pushing this new version of Windows out? Because honestly, I discovered these issues within 2 minutes of logging into Windows 10 for the first time, and Windows 10 has been out what, over a year at this point?

So either they consulted people and ignored their advice, or simply flat out don't give a damn, because I refuse to believe a competent QA team failed to notice these problems during testing. And frankly, I'm not sure what's worse.

And finally, the crowning turd in the punch-bowl (to quote General Melchett), reverting to Windows 7 was a 6 step process, including having to fill out a form as to why I was reverting, a huge warning about backing up my files (incidentally, no warning to do this when upgrading, it's almost as if they were trying to deter me from reverting using scare tactics), and a final "You can still cancel even now!" dialog.

6 steps of pleading to get me to remain on Windows 10. Not a single "Are you sure you actually want to update?" message.

So, it looks like I'll be clinging desperately to the Windows 7 life-raft until Microsoft eventually shoots a hole in it as they did with XP.

Honestly, if anything software is getting more inaccessible to me as time goes on. Virtually all the trendy design styles used across the tech industry are an unbelievalbe pain in the face for me.
