    +1.
And how much is this country, which was rescued by the IMF/EU only a few years ago and which owes more now than it did then ( €200,000,000,000.00 ?) borrowing to celebrate the insurgents of 1916? Another €50,000,000 ?

Would that not have been better spent trying to cherish the children of the nation who are homeless or drug addicts often found on or near this very street ?

where did you pull 50 million from?

How did you manage to drag yourself out of bed this morning with the weight of all that bitterness holding you down?

I'd say you and your ilk are absolutely hating life today. I take great pleasure from that

Yes. Lets never celebrate anything until we have solved world hunger, cancer and super AIDS. Nobody go outside next week and spend money. They junkies will get you. Them or the luas drivers.

Great argument. Really has me convinced

If you think we're all equal you're obviously deluded. But given the occasion that's in it, can you not give it a fúcking rest for one weekend?

The bitterness from you reeks and I feel sorry for you.

Have a look at the comments in the the Sky News section on the commemorations:

Some of the responses are pathetic but not surprising.

Unreal stuff, the Brits really don't know a lot about their past.

Also, they're comparing this to marches in the North which are completely different things.

Amazing what happens if you listen to the commentary.

Get up on wrong side of bed? Thanks for info but hope you're not a teacher by profession

I'd say if we had a referendum on joning the UK it'd be a close call based on the ****e you see on boards on a daily basis.

We hear this all the time that there is a large unrepresented unionist opinion in Ireland yet not one candidate will stand for election in any of the 166 seats available in 40 constituencies.

Put up or shut up I say! :pac:

Agreed. The amount of Irish people also who seem to just want the forget our history is just astonishing to be honest. People are so holier than thou nowadays and far too PC about everything.

I, for one, am extremely proud of what took place today - a wonderful day and I'm very proud to be Irish.

That looked great. Was happy to see all the blue lights getting represented as well as the defense forces.

Highlight of the day was seeing someone had in their wisdom put Marty and Joan together.

Also can the whingers just give it a break for one day.

It lead to the formation of the state, celebrate that. Have military appreciation day some other time.

Everyone so proud to be Irish today. Will they be so proud tomorrow when all the bells and whistles are replaced by junkies and homeless people?

We are such a fake nation.

O'Connel Street was only open to those whose relatives were related to those in the 1916 rising and VIP's which is a correct and fair way of doing it imo.

As long as John Bruton isn't one of them. God save us if that ineffably embarrassing sycophant to all things British, who regrets the independence of this part of the country, is there. Shudder. Anybody else from any political party I can live with (although it would be better if invitations were only given out to people who have improved our society, rather than to members of political parties - people like Peter McVerry, etc should be there)

I've never been into militarism in any form as it reminds me of all those British state glorifications of violence/war on tv each year. But given the people here who are condemning the role of the Defence Forces today are also the same people who commend those British poppy glorifications while condemning Irish independence and culture across this site, I've a temporary conversion to it this week.

The military celebrate it every year, why should they be excluded now?

I am not bitter at all. Just think the street should be open to all. Calm down there you are projecting a lot based on me saying people are equal. That was the point of the rising. It is stated in the proclamation. Maybe you should find out more about it.

You feel sorry for me?based on one comment I made that you disagree with. Get over yourself

Good value for money - €50 million for 1,500 events.

Having watched RTE's coverage today, I'd say it was good value.

Oh give over would ya. Why do you feel the need to speak up for what other people supposedly think.

You're so edgy for seemingly not caring about these celebrations.

By all means include them, this is exclusively military.

Good to see the military being put to good use for once. Must beat sitting around a barracks playing the Playstation all day.

At least they're earning their wages for once.

One single unit marching down O'Connell street earned 16 D.S.O's on over seas service. That was over seas service that was keeping peace in a war torn hell hole.

And they don't need balaclavas or dark shades - because they have fcuk all to be ashamed of .

That was the crux of your argument though...

I know well what is stated in the proclamation but despite the promotion of equality in every day life, we are anything but. - Different argument for another day.

But I have no issue whatsoever with them closing O'Connell St today for dignitaries or relatives.

    Why wouldn't they be?

If anything the parade highlighted the number of people - paid and unpaid - who work behind the scenes to try and correct issues such as homelessness and who are there when accident, illness and tragedy strikes.

Ah well, at least the DF's Pipe Band is giving it socks.

Great to see the contribution of the DF to the UN placed at the heart of the march past.

I do like a good pipe band.

Mocking the armed forces of the country, as the veterans of UN missions march down O'Connell St with the memories of their comrades that were killed on deployment fresh in their minds is disgusting.

Those of you smugly acting like d1cks, I feel nothing but pity for you and your sad "look at me" attention grabbing attempts. Shame on you.
