Terrible, terrible news coming out of the Ravens where CB Tray Walker (4th round pick last year) has been seriously injured in a dirt-bike accident in Florida. He's in a critical condition and in a serious fight for his life. :(

A bit of sympathy would still be the right response in fairness.

Jesus that's awful, as much as you could say it was stupid to be doing what he was, you've got to feel for his friends and family right now.

Rule changes for the upcoming season:

    c101e92b3a5ca133f66a654fe8e1cfc4.png

All chop blocks being banned will cause the most stir.

What do people think of the Ravens proposal re: expanding replay to include all but a handful of judgment calls? According to Harbaugh, there were 5 games determined by non-reviewable calls.
Also at the coaches breakfast, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh passionately defended his team's proposal to expand replay to include all rulings but a handful of judgment calls. No action was taken on it Tuesday.

"There were five games last year that were determined by nonreviewable calls," Harbaugh said. "[They] determined the outcome of the game. The fans don't understand that. They don't want to look at it and see the official make a mistake [that] everyone saw in real time that the league said, 'It's not reviewable. We can't fix that.' What do you mean, we can't fix it? We can't fix that when we decide not to be able to fix it. We can fix it. Just fix it."

Good to see no action on allowing teams to challenge all decisions made on the field /s

This is a tough one, the game is already slow but with only 2 challenges I don't see why they don't make all calls reviewable. Not going to add much time to the game and they'll get it right. Harbaugh has a good point if they can fix it they should.

I'm delighted with the chop block rule that should have been banned a long time ago

I find the fact you can't throw a coaches challenge inside the 2 minute warning stupid

I don't it means you don't have to keep timeouts for a potential challenge, you can use them for clock management etc in the last two mins, in the knowledge that any dodgy decisions should get looked at in any case.

Essentially you have 2 challenges (or 3) for plays that are not touchdowns or turnovers, that don't happen in the last 2 mins of either half. It drastically reduces the prospect of being unable to challenge a play because you are out of challenges.

You should however be able t o challenge pretty much any play, particularly Pass Interference calls and calls like late hit on a QB or hit on a defenseless receiver. I could see a lot of those getting overturned.

Was there also talk of a yellow card system for players? so after say 3 yellows (eg. for unnecessary roughness) a player misses a game or something.

There is a proposal for that (ejection for 2 unsportsmanlike penalties) but not (yet) approved. It could be approved today I think

I doubt it tbh, can't see it beinbg approved as too many players would get ejected/not be able to play hard

If the rule (2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties) had been implemented for the past 3 seasons it would have resulted in 2 ejections total. It's unnecessary roughness that is the common one.

That's only twice in 801 games. Greg Little (2013 v Baltimore) and Brian Orakpo (2015 V New Orleans). Nice idea but the rule isn't gonna change anything.

What about the Josh Norman/OBJ incident, surely there were 2 unsportsmanlikes against OBJ?

Anyway, seems like it will be implemented on a 1 year trial as well as touchbacks going to the 25 rather than the 20.

Further attempts to prevent the return, one of the few genuine exhilarating moments in football games.

You'd imagine a lot of teams will kick it a little short and bank on stuffing before the 25 yards though?

Not in favour of it at all, tbh.

Hard Knocks is going to feature the LA Rams this year. Should be interesting for Gurley and Donald. And their sub par QB battle.

I think its a difficult thing to try to place a kick inside the 10 you could end up with muffed kicks that lead to big returns or giving up field position at the 30-35. My bet is that they all still kick for touchbacks.

OBJ got 3 unnecessary roughness's, but no unsportsmanlike conducts, so wouldn't have been impacted by the new rule

Why do they keep calling it the red card rule? It's not like they'll have to play with 10 on defence

Soccer isn't exactly their area of expertise.

Interesting change to the IR rule. Previously you could designate 1 player as eligible to return from IR, but you had to nominate him at the time he goes on IR. From next season it seems you can reactivate 1 player but it can be anyone who is on IR.

Bad explanation but seems like a good idea to me.

A new report from the New York Times is another hit to the NFL's credibility when it comes to their concussion research. The NFL had a concussion committee conduct extensive research into concussions suffered from 1996 to 2001. The committee emphasized the completeness of the research, but the Times has found this to be significantly inaccurate.

According to the report, the NFL's data suggested the San Francisco 49ers had no concussions on their roster between 1997 and 2000. It also says the Dallas Cowboys had no concussions the entire length of the study. That seems reasonable. Steve Young and Troy Aikman definitely did not suffer any concussions during those periods. And Steve Young's career definitely did not end due to a concussion or anything like that. Glad we cleared it up!

Bad week for the NFL and their concussion department.

The NFL really have been quite slow on the uptake wrt how long it would take people to figure out the difference between the actual frequency concussions were occurring and how many were actual recorded and/or any notice taken of.

But I guess they got what they wanted with the derisory NFLPA settlement so they're probably still quite chuffed.
