    Thursday 10th March

Sleep 9 hrs - RHR 55 (ranges from 47-52 normally)
Nada, sick day - a rare occurance for me. Slept for hours. Purchased a basket load of organic & healthy stuff in the local veg store. Tried to replicate my mothers’ chicken soup which cured everything from pneumonia to a broken heart, appetite has been poor post race, this seems to be normal at this stage for me.

    Friday 11th March 2 miles easy @ 11 avg HR 128
Sleep 11 hours  RHR 53
RHR still a bit higher than usual this morning despite epic sleep. Worked from home and was feeling a fair bit better by mid morning and was out the door like a shot when it was suggested I try a couple of miles before the weekend runs which have been greatly reduced from what I was supposed to do.

    Saturday 12th March 8 miles @ 10:32 avg HR 151…..
    Sleep 10 hours RHR 53
Should have been doing 18 miles with 10@mp this weekend but was advised against it - I’ve done a pretty good job sticking to the plan to date and one run is not going to make or break me. So the plan was tweaked a bit and I jumped at the chance to do a parkrun - feels like forever since I’ve run Cabinteely. Got there at 8.30 and headed out the road to do a loop before the run, my HR was on the high side again though :( - I drank 500ml of water before I left the house (over the course of an hour) and I thought this would combat any issues with the temperature rise, (if that’s what’s contributing to this) Finished the loop back at the parkrun start line, spotted Mr Stew who said he was pacing 30mins and decided to go with him instead of sticking to MP - holy chryst - I’d forgotten how damm hilly those hills were, first loop was ok, chatting away etc, 2nd loop he’s still chatting I’m not :) 3rd lap? Done, banjaxed - I’d forgotten my inhaler again and it was obviously very humid today, I could feel it in my breathing and I was sweating buckets. It’s good to run in this heat pre Rotterdam, it could be warmer than the 14 degrees it was today but my body does not like the heat…

Followed by coffee/scone/words of wisdom from marthastew. Headed off for a swim & sauna afterwards which was divine. Felt full of beans afterwards.

I”m not sure what the problem is TBH, woke up this morning with hives which I got a few times last summer, never got to the bottom of it but wondered if it was heat related.. I ‘feel’ ok but my RHR is still high & HR was higher than normal on the run today (but not yesterday) Ososlo has already said I”m probably overthinking this and perhaps she’s right. Anyway, I’m not going to run tomorrow, up to about 10 mins ago I was still planning to run 10 miles but more to loose than gain I think if I did it.

No harm in having a little pre-taper after such consistent training I think. Make sure you enjoy these lighter days. Funny to see the 8miles as a short run :).

I am way way late to the party but just wanted to say congrats on the half and PB! Exciting race report! I'm really looking forward to your Rotterdam debut! You're going to be amazing!

Good to listen to your body ( and to the people telling you to listen to your body !) FD - you're training very well and a few easier days at this stage won't make any difference to the big day, although pushing the boat out too far when your body isn't right could well have a much bigger effect than you would like.

    Tuesday 15th March 4 miles @ avg hr 135 (max 169) avg pace 12:03

Took Sunday & Monday off running in the hope that would improve things. The pace for this run was abysmal, don’t think I’ve ever run that pace before but nonetheless that’s what the HR dicated so I stuck with it. Whatever bug is in my system is still there (if that’s what this is) I feel tired, I have a low grade headache on and off during the day and am lightheaded. I’ll run by HR again tomorrow and then decide what to for the session on Thursday.

    Wednesday 16th March 4 miles @ 11:25 avg hr 138 (max 146)

The fact that my max HR on this was much better than yesterday, even though the avg was a little higher (but for better pace) gave me some hope that things were improving. I had felt tired throughout the day - I can actually feel my heart beating in my chest which is a very weird sensation. I slept on the train home from work and when I woke up I felt refreshed, I felt better and tonight’s run felt easier too. However……

    Thursday 17th March 6.6 miles @ 11:25 avg hr 143 max 165

The plan said 14 miles with 10 @+/- 2% mp.. I actually thought I could do 14 easy last night but was advised against this (thank god for people with more sense than me…) I headed to the PP and parked in the visitors centre with the idea that I’d have coffee & scone after the super run I was going to have.. Motivation of sorts. Set off down chesterfield ave, downhill, figured it would allow me to build up the HR as it usually does - nope, I was straight into 133-135 after a few hundred metres. Kept the pace slow and a good eye on the HR, but when the watch beeped at mile 3 I had a quick look 11:45 for that mile - out of nowhere I burst into tears with the frustration of it all - in the middle of North Road!! Made a beeline for the nearest tree and just sat down trying to pull myself together. Decided there and then my marathon journey was over - I mean seriously, what the f*** was I doing sitting behind a tree in the PP crying my eyes out over a run??? When did this become the bee all and end all? I gave myself a mental kick in the backside - at least I can run, I don’t have a serious injury or months of rehab in front of me! I set off again to finish the loop.

On my way back down Chesterfield Ave I met a friend who was coming the other way, also running. We stopped and chatted and when she asked how the training was going I told her - she has many marathons under her belt and a few ultras, she pointed out a tree across the road where she had a similar situation to me in one of her training cycles. She ran with me for a while (too fast….) and she said the same thing that others have been saying all week - thanks to tang, aero and meno for their endless patience and support, to dubgal, Myles and ososlo for their messages of encouragement and to everyone else who has commented on strava.

So, I bit the bullet and went to the doctor this afternoon - she checked my HR & blood pressure and listened to my lungs - all clear, no infection, no virus, however, being a doc she wouldn’t give me the all clear to run the marathon or to keep training  she wants me to come back next week for and ECG and blood tests, the results of which won’t be known for weeks (well I think the EGC is immediate)

A few people now have suggested I’m overthinking this - is that even possible? Could I be making my own HR 10-15 beats higher, every day? Am I going crazy??!!! Answers on a postcard! Anyway, will see tomorrow what to do with the rest of the plan - there’s a 22 miler with my name on it this weekend, part of me is inclined to throw the HR monitor in the bin and just go and run it - I mean I’m screwed anyway so what harm!!!
    ok ok I won't I promise :D

Friday 18th March 3.1 miles @ avg hr 131 max hr 151 avg pace 11:50

    No change then :(

FWIW: have been sleeping 8-9 hours (10 on 2 occasions!) drinking plenty of water, eating well & taking a multi vit

Sorry to hear news AM, have never ran by heart rate so not to sure,
Not to sure if you have been taking much if your Ventolin lately but
that increases heart rate. Just a thought, hope it sorts it self out.

I reckon it's cause your so EXCITED about spending the weekend in Rotterdam in the company of martyboy48 that the HR is so sky high. Explains the heart palpitations to!!!

thanks G, I'm not using it enough to have an impact and it hasn't made a difference to the readings in the past so unfortunately can't blame that, I wish!

Hopefully all is okay for you! I have a heart rate monitor but only use it to every few weeks as a guide to where I am at with pace ranges, effort and fitness. Possibly you have accumulated fatigue throughout training but that should hopefully clear in your taper and have you nice and fresh on the day. Heart rates are a good guide for sure but there seems to be a lot of factors that can affect it so should only by a guide as opposed to an absolute measure of effort and pace.

How's your iron levels? And when you get your bloods tested, can you ask specifically for your stored ferritin levels to be read (this is not routinely looked for in an iron test). Sit tight my dear, all is not lost.

I had anaemia years ago so I'm fairly sure its not that, I eat plenty of iron rich foods - of course I won't know the definite answer to that util the bloods come back - a week too late  I believe you're not supposed to take iron supplements unless instructed by a GP so I'd better wait. I'll definitely ask for that test! thanks, again :)
