I was called out on this last night I will admit but my defence was I was being conservative, nothing wrong with having a cushion! :)

Saturday 5th March: Kinvara Half Marathon 13.1 miles @ 8:53 avg HR 168 (14.3 miles total incl warm up)

This was a big one for me, I’ve done 3 half marathons, two where I tried to go sub 2 and failed, most recently spectacularly failed at Rock N Roll 6 months ago (2:15:xx). Even though I had a good race at Trim I genuinely did not know how today was going to go, I certainly hoped for the 1:57:xx McMillan (and meno!) were predicting but I’d have been satisfied with 1:59:59.

Sooo the much talked about journey down, well, apparently what’s said on tour stays on tour so I can’t tell ye anything, I promised not to mention the twat incident (its tweet, tang, tweet….) so I’ll say nothing.. also I’m not allowed to mention ‘suspenders’ or sexy socks… ok, I’ll say nothing!! I will say though that there was no sunglasses meltdown, no matter what he says guys, right!

Arrived down nice n early (10am, race starts at 12) suited me fine, I don’t like to be late :D Met mbar who also arrived in plenty of time. Walked down the town, found a clean toilet and eventually it was time to shed the layers and for the boys to do their hair and do a warm up down to the start line. Weather had been beautiful on the drive up, not a spot of wind either, however…. its the Burren, and unpredictable, it rained just before the start and then the clouds cleared and the sun came out.

    Miles 1-5
    8:56, 8:39, 8:43, 8:41, 8:51

Off we set, a bit of a crowded start to say the least and eh UPHILL, super… figured I’d bide my time and not try to pass everyone, started to clear out after a half a mile and I had some catching up to do, but slowly slowly. Mile one clicked off in 8:56, super. The next few miles ticked off without too much incident, a hill here, a hill there (Martyboy - HILLS EVERYWHERE!) but I was feeling good. I had forgotten to take my inhaler and my breathing was more laboured than Trim but I made an effort to get a breathing rhythm going and this really helped.

Mile 5, Meno had suggested I do the maths mid race (:D:D) really??! But I took his calculations and wrote them on my hand, 45 mins @ 5 miles and 90 @ 10. Hit mile 5 at exactly 44 mins, feeling good still.

    Miles 6-10
    8:58, 8:53, 9:07, 8:56, 8:56

Somewhere around here we turned right into the most stunningly beautiful vista of the Burren, and straight into a strong side wind!! Well screw you wind, you can go and take a hike. There were very few people to draft off today and I ended up passing anyone I thought I could hide behind. I thought I remembered Abhainn saying miles 5-7 were fast if you had the wind at your back  Somewhere mid Burren, with no shelter the heavens opened and it bucked ice cold rain on us, I sped up.. I think the rain cooled me down and seemed to give me an extra spurt. The ‘flatish’ section ended and the rolling hills came again, but what goes up, must come down and I used the few downhill sections to my advantage to shake out my arms & rest my lungs a little.
I hit mile 10 at 1:28:40 - happy days, only a parkrun to go and I”m home, I can do this, I can and I will, trust the training….

    Miles 11-13.1
    8:57, 9:14, 8:46

There was talk at the start of this massive hill somewhere in mile 11, I was dreading it, then I saw it, ok, it’s a hill and yes it’s pretty nasty but I have this, and a hill is not going to stop me now, I slowed to go up at a reasonable pace because I knew I was tiring and I didn’t want to have nothing left in the tank before the end. The breathing was laboured but not disastrous. I thought well you’re racing today, you should be breathing hard! .

We were approaching the town, 1 mile left, 1 teeny tiny mile and there’s another hill at the GAA grounds, no problemo, I’m tired now, I really want to see the finish line, we turned off the main road & I knew there wasn't much left. In my eyeline I could see tang, jogging out to see where I was, I thought’ ‘he doesn't see me, I’m too early’ :) but he did and he joined me for the last .5 miles in, I just about had the energy to ask how he had done. Having not had the race he wanted he still came out to run in with me, encouraging me every step of the way. You’re the best B, you really are, the kind of person who always thinks of others no matter what’s going on with you. You will have the best marathon ever in Rotterdam, you deserve it & more. Thank you.

Over the line to see 1:57:06 on the clock and knowing I had started a bit back I was absolutely overjoyed, arms in the air, grinning like a cheshire cat. mbarr was at the finish line too, also with a shiney new PB, well done M!!! super running & hope the feet are in a bucket of ice now!!

Gel wise, I took one about 30 mins before the start and one around mile 6ish just before a water station. I took water at each station (250ml bottles) too only a few swigs and dumped the rest. No issue opening or taking the gel mid race.

We headed to the registration hall where there was coffee & food but no one really felt like eating. We queued for the massages but the queue was very long and not moving so we headed off to hit the road home. On the way home at a coffee stop we realised the official results were in so checked them quickly - my time said 2:17 or something like that, I was DEVASTATED, what? how is that possible? there has to be a mistake right? It was suggested to me that the bib I wore and the bib in the results were not the same (thank you N) yes! that was it! I’d been given someone else’s bib number, phew! Panic over (yes, I admit it, so sue me…) So I’ve been in contact with sports timing and they promise to look into it asap, hopefully very asap!!

At this point in the game I want to give credit to meno, the plan is fantastic, it’s hard work yes but also very enjoyable and has clearly brought me fitness gains beyond what I’d hoped so thank you and for all your help and support so far. And to Aero, for all your advice and yes, you are always right..

No matter what happens in Rotterdam I finally, finally have my sub 2 half - yahooooo!

    gun time: 1:57:07
    chip time 1:56:41
