I think we'll have a tablet controller as an option but it'll probably be from the NX handheld side of the platform. Maybe backwards compatibility with the Wii U gamepad as well. The NX console may have a traditional controller. I really enjoy the gamepad, I was skeptical of it back when it launched. Bar ZombiU, we had to wait until Super Mario Maker to show its real potential in my opinion. I love the second screen, its potential hasn't even been scratched and there are improvements that are possible in terms of specifications, e.g. 720p, capacitive screen. I will be very disappointed if it's not kept in some way. I'm typing this on the gamepad while watching TV right now.

I have a nasty feeling they'll not bother with backwards compatibility.
It's too limiting and the market for it is too small, relative to the numbers they need to attract to the format.
More likely is they'll just repackage WiiU hits, like Mario Maker, for the NX, and charge us on the double.
Unless they follow the Minecraft model and allow heavy discounts for those who already own it, using the game as a key for an NX downloaded port.

Sadly, that means we had to wait until the end of the consoles life to get a second must have gamepad title, following the first one.
It's really not good enough though.

Could it be that it was not only the public that lost confidence in the WiiU format, but Nintendo as well?
Their big big WiiU releases, Smash Bros, MK8 and Splatoon have all largely ignored the tablet, and play just fine, if not better, on a regular controller.

I think they should rid themselves of the tablet controller, specially if it needlessly inflated the price of the console. Rid themselves of the whole Wii brand in fact, start as fresh as they can.

NX is fine, a definite new machine, I agree Wii branding has been muddied too much by the wii/Wii u confusion. Nintendo really need to advertise this properly though.

I'd be happy enough with or without the tablet controller.

Best thing I think would be to include backwards compatibility with Wii/Wii U games, so have the NX able to connect to the Wii U controller, or Wii controllers, but not have that necessary for new games. And (if the handheld+console rumours are true) to have the handheld one work in lieu of the Wii U gamepad, or work simply as an off-TV way to play NX games too.

I also hoping that the NX can solve my interpersonal skill deficits and the fact I can't process gluten, but I've a feeling Nintendo won't bother.... shame on you Nintendo!!!

Ah now, the idea of providing backwards compatibility through the use of existing peripherals rather than forcing the NX design to conform to the Wii-U's failed asymmetrical layout is pretty sound and hardly asking too much. And while it would be limiting for the hardware to have to be able to run Wii / Wii U software (unless there's enough grunt for a kick-ass emulator to sit on the more PC-like innards), **** all the newcomers, the party faithful deserve their due consideration!

The Pro Controller is the most underrated controller ever. Seriously how they got so much battery life out of it is an amazing accomplishment. I really hope it can be used with the new console.

That is the only controller I hope the NX has and uses.
Gamepad may be great for most of us on here, but for the other 50 odd million ps4 and xbone owners, it is not.

Edit: christ, Nintendo have some mountain to climb with the NX (whatever it may be).

The Wii was not for the other crowd either but it still sold by the bucket load. They could do well with that crowd, they just need to convince them with compelling experiences and software. Dual screen usage in Black Ops II was good and could be improved upon.

I for one will miss the second screen experience if they remove it.

The Linx Vision-8 seems to be getting quite popular. It's for streaming Xbox One and Steam games and it looks great. The price is a bit off putting if you have a tablet and/or a wii u. (It's not even very expensive).
I am very tempted and keep nearly biting the bullet. Somebody on the Xbox forum bought one (mickeroo or maximoose) and has me sold on it, I just can't justify/afford it right now.

So, it is liked but not necessarily as the way Nintendo visioned it (to add to the game experience), more for the off screen continuity. It would definitely be a cool option. Hopefully the Wii U gamepad will work with it.

I was thinking the same.. If they get it wrong, it will be two consoles in 4 years. They can afford it, but that would be some battering to come back from. Surely they would just release a generic Xbox/PS console with all the old faithfuls and lots of power? Sleek Black with glowing red nintendo logo... :)

Well if theyre keeping tight lipped about it, probably won't see hardware till E3.

    Do they do E3?

I seem to remember they didn't bother recently.

Well they did an E3 long direct, and the treehouse. Course if they have a brand spanking new console, seems logical they might actually go to the show.

Only 4 months from E3 now. Time flies.

Day booked off work and all for 1st day E3 ☺ PS Xbox late night followed by sleep in and nintendo next day at 5pm.

Went to Gamescom year b4 Wii released as VIP. WII wasnt on show but Got private private demos of it behind closed doors with Sega and then Nintendo. That first momemt playing duckhunt and red steel was special. It was so great seeing something completely differernt and it worked. Might be worth trip in august if NX is there ☺ hoping for few wow moments

I'll go as far as saying if there isn't a second screen option / remote play option i won't be bothering with it for quite some time.

I accept I'm the exception and not the rule though with my huge off screen play so Ninty should do what they think will sell units for the bulk of users.

If off screen play makes it too expensive don't do it.
If off screen play means mentioning he Wii U don't do it.

I've played 70% plus of my Wii U time on the gamepad playing offscreen.

I left Splatoon due to this reason which was a real shame.

I've at least half a dozen games yet to play on Wii U so I'm in no rush anyway.

Looking forward to what Nintendo come up with though.

Haha, that's hardcore. I have booked a day off for a game release but never for E3!

Yeah, there reason I asked about photos was because I was thinking about the first magazine I got with with photos of the Wii remote.

I actually remember just staring at it on the train thinking this is gonna be really, really special (which it was). That was the most excited I've ever been for a hardware release.

I'm not going to quote your whole post, but it's like you've squeezed my soul into a round bottomed flask and run it through a fractionating column of words.

Off Tv. Such a simple idea, such a huge change to how I live and game.
I'd say I'm in the high 90s in terms of percentage of usage.

    Poor old Splatoon.

I still can't fix the connection issues with Splatoon on my WiiU, so it just gathers dust, which is a pity as with the initial builds it worked better and I found the game to be a hoot.

If it's just x1 you could get any windows 10 tablet for that.

What's your router Cidey? And are the issues mainly since the last update?

It happens to a lot of people.
This thread has some great details.

I've had issues with Splatoon and only Splatoon since after a month of release, and with a wired connection too.

Might the fact that the game has a highlighted 'X' in the name, suggest Ninty are going with NX as a consumer name? The Nintendo NX....sounds great :)
