I'm not, grand team for winter hurling no doubt, but height of the summer, tipp or Kilrenny, doubt you'll beat them with Coughlan full back and Dillon and Brick(respect) in the forwards

What's wrong with Coughlan full back? He was very good last season. You can't fault brick either he's a fantastic player

Coughlan may not be perfect but he's surely the best option for full back in the county. He was fairly solid last year so is more than entitled to keep his place.

Dillon works hard but probably does need to score a bit more, Brick one of the first names on the team sheet. His leadership alone is vital in a young forward division.

Apart from Tadgh and Paudie, the above 15 is probably our strongest team I think.

That is a super team. Management obviously see this as a very important game. We havent beaten kk in the league in a good few years. I think 2009 possibly the last time. Hopefully we can do it on Sunday I think it would set us up nicely for the year ahead

About as strong a team as we could field, would be confident enough that we can take Kilkenny at home at this time of year with that team.

No disrespect to Iggy who has been a great servant but glad to see SOK is starting.

I dunno what the fascination is with running down coughlan around here
As far as I can tell he is one of a few to hold Seamus Callanan scoreless (maybe 1pt??) from play in last few years....ended up man on man with him on a few occasions and short of fouling him couldn't have done any better on him....how anyone could fault him after last years Munster final if they were on the terrace??

Though roll on Sunday....should tell a lot of where Waterford are at in terms of strength training as it's as close to a match up for last August as possible!!

Though any word on when Pauricc Mahoney back

In the last 2 or 3 years about 23 or 24 players from different clubs have been present on the County panel. Think it's a sign of the strength in depth in clubs down through the levels of Waterford hurling.

Waterford's future successes are predicated on maintaining that depth of wealth across all of the county. But I think its a sign that the people that are putting these structures in place, and the coaches in clubs and schools developing them have done excellent work in the last 20 years. Long may it continue.

I think we'll win tomorrow and it's important we do.

Honestly don't think dillon is good enfough, cant see what he offers to the team.
brick could still do a job in the forwards tho if they play the same system.

I would be very confident with the team for tomorrow. A year older,a year wiser and more experienced, the time has come for us now not to be fearing teams coming into our backyard but to be stamping our authority on things from the start. This is the 3rd year of the plan so having seen vast improvements last season we should be buzzing with anticipation of what this season might hold for us. Waterford by 3-4pts tomorrow.

Kilkenny look quite strong around the middle and half forward line. Moran v Buckley and Barron v Fogerty should be an interesting battle. Our halfbackline will be up against it though. Austin Gleeson v TJ Reid, D Fives v R Hogan and P Mahony v W Walsh. (if they lineout as named)
I think P Mahony should hold his own on Walsh although he will be put under alot of pressure on the kilkenny puckout. Gleeson and Fives have a huge battle on their hands but both players should be looking forward to this early season test. The aerial duel between Gleeson and Reid should be interesting, there not too many better forwards in the air than TJ Reid.
You would also hope that our supply of ball into Maurice and Paddy Curran is more suitable than some of the ball fired in last year.
All in all a tough opening test for Waterford no doubt but one we can win and with home advantage i think we might just shade it.

What are the options of the bench tomorrow ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Tom Devine, Shane McNulty, Stephen Bennett, Brian O'Halloran (are the latter 2 injured?) would be my guess of first off the bench?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭mountgomery burns

Kilkenny team isn't as good as that with which we did battle in August. Ours is pretty similar. And were at hiem should be winning

Don't want to sound all PTH2009, but I do worry to hear folk expecting us to beat a KK team with 12 starters from last years winning all Ireland team. Gonna be a tough ask as always. Fingers crossed for a good game and that it stays dry.

Tipp and limerick looked decent last night, although the opposition was poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Yeah I wouldn't be going into any game v KK expecting to win. Play well and we might have a chance.

Best of luck to all the lads and management today, here's to a good start to 2016.

    Up the Déise

We are missing our 2 most influential players from last years league win. The adjustments are kept to the minimal which shows how important a win is here today. The Austin Gleeson positional roulette continues with it looking likely he starts half back. Plan B is he swaps with Moran and Plan C is he is moved to the forwards. Think Tom Devine is a doubt with a dead leg, may come on. Tom Ryan is a good option based on the Munster League and Brian O Halloran based on last years league. Michael Harney would offer a ball winning option. McNulty probably first call for the defence.

I'd like to see McGrath take a leaf out of Brian Cody's book and put our best forward on their weakest defender. So Dan's brother on Cody's son just to see where he is at. Dillon is better near the goal anyway. Shane Bennett, Patrick Curran and Colin Dunford are exciting forwards but will need the guardianship of the Brick.

I'm really looking forward to a good game, the pitch may have other ideas but I think we can win this. Keeping 2 of Buckley, Reid and Hogan quiet will be a tall order. Welcome to Division 1A.

Puke hurling from Waterford. 2 forwards inside 50 metre line and 10 wides.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Awful game, worse shooting but will happily take the win.
    Well done lads.

I would say lovely hurling from Waterford. TBF they played all the hurling and should have won by 10 points. They need P O Mahoney back if only for the frees and to have Shanahan inside, and need to threaten the goal more often. Given the terrible conditions they played well and thoroughly deserved to win.
