Gase gone, hopefully he doesn't poach any staff.

Especially not loggains. I assume we'll be rolling with the same system so continuity will be really vital, especially since Cutler will be the qb,and we finally had him playing to his potential.

Felt sorry for the Vikings fans (I hate the Seahawks to be honest), but it was a strange one alright. There were people (jokingly) saying he would be MVP after the first half or so, and he seemed to be doing so well in such crappy conditions. Tough going for them. Been a long time since the Bears have been in a playoff game, but days like that would sicken your hole, so maybe it's for the best...

We should be really looking at what the vikings are doing - they just won our division toppling the Packers and should have beaten the Seahawks (a hot team right now and the best team over last 5 years). Look at their high draft pick investments

    Smith
    Flyod
    Rhodes
    Barr
    Kendricks
    Waynes
    Hunter

They also signed Joseph and extended Griffen.

Zimmer has done a great job with them and I've no doubt he influenced their first 3 picks all being defense last year.

We've a defensive head coach and Fangio one of the best DC's (if not the best) - seems mad to me we selected White at 7 last year. We gave him Goldman and Amos only from 6 picks and both turned into key starters. 2 picks from 6? With our defence?

We should be giving Fangio all the talent he needs to develop long term prospects for us. Then use FA for the odd supplementary player and some offensive players.

Loggains confirmed oc. No surprise there.

I didn't personally have any problems with the last draft because we quite simply needed Talent at every position, including wr once Marshall was being shipped out. I would be hoping for dl, lb, and ol picks in the early rounds this year. Don't know enough about the college game outside of maybe Notre dame to really have any opinions on who to draft at this point.

All the defenders who have impressed picked after 7 would have been an almighty reach with the exception of maybe Peters and there were obviously legitimate concerns with him. Several others have been solid (Johnson, Ray, Brown, Byron Jones) but again, only a trade back would have made them palatable and Pace said the offers to trade back were just not there. Beasley was the cut and dry alternative to White and I just don’t like him.

That all said I still have a big problem with the Marshall trade and obviously White would not have been considered if he stayed. That and the Ediie Royal signing are Pace’s black marks in an otherwise strong first year.

Ah I don't really either. If it's true BPA then that's fine, just unfortunate that they ended up with 4 offensive players and 2 defensive.

I would try give Fangio as much young players develop as possible while he is still here (which it appears he will be next year at this stage).

I just think we need an identity as a team - you can't be strong in every area, so we need to decide who we are going to be. It's just not possible to focus on all areas so we need to be specific rather than drafting and signing players all around the park.

I would love us to look like the Vikes - quality defence (the focus) and a running game (2nd focus).

How? He is a mouth piece - he will wear out his welcome in new york like very other place. Him leaving also aided Jay's development rather than 5 seconds staring down Marshall regularly.

Anyway Marshall will be on his last legs by the time the Bears are in the playoffs again. I'll take Amos for him any day and that's not to mention the money saving that funds the mcphee contract (please god his knees hold up or that will be a big mark on Pace).

The Vikings have done a fantastic job in building from a low base, and they are a real model of what can be done as well as a reminder that you don't need a spectacular QB, just a competent one, if other pieces are in place.

The problem is that now we have to deal with both them and the Packers in the division (not to mention we have gone several years without beating the Lions), so playoffs seem a long way away. But Pace seems to, to me, to be pointing us in the right direction for the most part.

Definitely agree about getting rid of Marshall, at the time I didn't think it was the right thing to do but he must have become a poisonous presence in the locker room. It seems to have been best for both parties.

The mention of Amos reminds me that we also need to get a better safety. He's pretty good, but he's only one guy, and he seems better to us than he is because the bar for playing safety with the Bears has been so low for so long. Chris Con(cussion)te was OK when he was playing, but otherwise...

Because he was our best player, one of my favourite players, was traded at the very basement of his value, was on a favourable contract and his trading limited our options in the draft. If Amos was a priority a bag of rocks could have had us trade up for him that late in the draft.

We don’t know his influence in the locker room so obviously have to speculate somewhat. I suspect had he not been injured in 2014 they would have been far more tolerant of his mouth, but we’ll never know. I’m looking at the Seahawks with every chance at making a third super-bowl and enough character concerns to fill a docket. Maybe Marshall went far beyond a Lynch, Bennett or Kam…. I guess we’ll never know.

Well... we still have a Bennett and we know how that's been going.

I don't buy that at all - they got what they could for him. Any team could have out bid the Jets. I don't see they'd get more for him if they hung onto him a year older and with that contract.
    SameOleJay wrote: »

I think it's pretty much accepted that we took BPA even if I'd have preferred a defensive BPA player.

He wasn't a priority - that's just a red herring. The point is they turned the pick into a starting safety (that's what good GM's do) who is the future. We got Amos and mcPhee essentially for Marshall.

I'd love to hear how Marshall would make us a better team in 2/3 years because this was never a short term project and I for one am grateful that we are looking long term for once rather than the patch jobs of recent years.

I think we can guess his influence - they didn't move him due to his lack of ability to play. He was also constantly in the media blabbing - radio, his show you name it.

NFL players are no angels and the likes of Michael Bennett et al shout about contracts, get arrested etc etc but the golden rule in team sports is don't disclose what goes on behind closed doors.

It's a great year to be looking for a DT

    - Bosa (gone obviously)
    - Robinson
    - Reed
    - Washington
    - Billings
    - Nkemdiche
    - Clark
    - Butler
    - Rankins

All nice prospects. Rankins is going to shoot up boards. anyone seen him at senior bowl practices? Very reminiscent of Donald - fast twitch 1 gap penatrator. Not going to suit us but going to be a player I'll follow.

I really like the Michigan centre Graham Glasgow, pity we drafted Grasu last year.

Also Vidal Alexander looks a nice guard prospect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭SameOleJay

Team won’t be the same without him. As good a pro as there is and an exceptional player. His first year with Trestman was incredible. Hope he contends in his next role.

    God speed Matt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,263 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Damn, that was sooner than expected. It's a shame to see him go. I guess the management have faith in their own draft picks, and I think Langford can be decent (but certainly not Matt Forte decent) but it will be really weird not seeing him in the backfield this year. And I think our running game will suffer as a result, no doubt. You have to assume they have a plan for using the savings to fix the much more glaring problems we have elsewhere.

Hope he goes somewhere and gets a Super Bowl now. He should be in demand, his production is still fantastic. Think he was scandalously overlooked for a pro-bowl in 2014-15, when he was just about the only thing about the Bears offense that you could have a shred of faith in.

Also I need to buy a new Bears jersey now.

He'll be a loss no doubt, Packers could do worse Rodgers would love him

That worries me, because he would fit in so well with that offense. He is a great receiving threat.

    Bushrod gone.

Qq; contract year for Marty.. Do you keep him for it?

Let's not kid ourselves, it's a late, late pick if he goes. I say keep him.

It's impossible to tell his attitude behind closed doors.

Is he happy to just play out his last year? (doubtful)

I personally think he'll be gone pick or no pick.

The way the wind is blowing it seems more likely that he'll be gone. The stories about his locker room presence are something we can only ever know second hand, and those stories lose nothing in the telling. But what we do have first hand is his on-field production, which seems to dip whenever he isn't in the mood, or when he's having contract difficulties.

Still, he's a great catching and blocking TE, and there aren't too many of them around. Having lost Forte already, it would make Cutler's job more difficult again to lose another short receiving option. Fine if you have a back up plan, but creating more needs to be resolved by the draft (I don't see any FA tight ends that would replace Marty) is dangerous business when there is pretty much no area of the field on D at which we're set, and none besides WR on O either (even at QB we need a backup).

I dunno. I liked Pace's last FA/draft but he's got a lot of hill to climb to progress again this year. I still think he seems to have a plan and knows what he's doing. Just hope he can pull it off.

I would like to hear some positive news!

Trevathan still not confirmed, nothing else of note.

There was talk of Akiem Hicks but that's gone quiet and Patriots want him back.

Vikings getting Boone is not good!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,263 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Talk that they are trying to sign Tracy Porter to a new deal, but that his price might be going up in a badly overheated market right now.

He's average. If we were going to sign him it shouldn't be when FA starts. Crazy if true

    Ian Rapoport the source.

Trevathan confirmed! Hopefully the number isn't too bad - this free agency has been mad so far

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,725 ✭✭✭kennyb3

Bobby massie confirmed now too. Inconsistent player - looks great and awful at times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,725 ✭✭✭kennyb3

Just checked and he was 45 of 77 tackles per pff - rank average and is expected to get 7/8m a year.

I'd rather have drafted someone early and taken our chances if those numbers are right.

They obviously didn't like Kyle at tackle.

Delighted with Trevathon, will be pissed if Massie got that money.

    Porter back too.

WHERE ARE THE NUMBERS FOR GOD SAKE.
