Had a thought about the rift ..basically with the high pricepoint , and the fact that seemingly to get the most out of it you need a very Hi end PC... could be the start of Arcades again , I mean if you had the cash to invest in a few rifts , a couple of reconditioned arcade racing cabs, some kick ass pcs and running something like (* for leagal reasons not) Asseto Corsa or project cars, get a pop up shop in the city centre and charged people 2 quid a go , you'd make a fortune !:)

On the topic of books I found "Masters of Doom" excellent, all about Romero and Carmack of ID.

"Game Over: How Nintendo Conquered The World" is a great read too.

By contrast "Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation" I found to be very annoying in it's writing style, can't remember what turned me off but I gave up on it after a chapter or two.
It pissed me off by getting some sega facts wrong and ignoring the whole Pre megadrive era of Sega..
Its the typical US gaming book that basically ignores all non US/Japan gaming (i.e. NES's for everyone , Games crash of 83 was worldwide[it wasnt really])
If you're talking books by the way , 'it's behind you ' About the making of the Speccy port of RType is worth a read

haven't bought from US in a good while, what are they like for stopping single games in customs?
would be happy enough to buy from Japan if there was a better chance of it sneaking through.

Had 2 nes games opened by customs just before Christmas which is to be expected, but it was under the value so wasn't charged. Other than that haven't had anything stopped from the states or Canada, although I don't buy much from there.

Anyone know what I'm going to need to do to hook a Raspberry PI 2 up to my AWSD?

I hooked up one to my Egret 3 ages ago as a test. More or less the same cab as yours.
I think I just installed retropie, hooked it up to my jpac and used a HDMI to VGA adapter. Worked perfectly, all MAME controls worked right away. The only issue might be lag with that HDMI to VGA thing.

You will need to make sure your Retropie or whatever frontend you use is set to run at 640x480 before you hook it up.

I'll pick up a HDMI to VGA adapter today, I have an ipac/jpac thingy already

Are you going to use the Rpi as your main MAME machine? It'll do the job, but it's a pity to use that permanently instead of something a bit more beefy and able to run more games, and run them better.

Also, getting the right romset for Retropie is a pain in the proverbials. I've only ever been able to get a small handful of mine running.

It’s not a major thing really, just grab the full romset that’s required. It's an older romset version but still easy to find.
Generally for the older Raspberry Pi MAME you want 0.37b5(very old), and there are other versions of MAME that use later romsets.

    Edit:

    mame4all-pi
MAME Version: Based on 0.37b5 (July 2000)
    Size: 1.86GB
    Romsets emulated: 2270

    Mame-libretro(imame4all)
MAME Version: Based on 0.37b5 (July 2000)
    Size: 1.86GB
    Romsets emulated: 2270

    AdvanceMAME 0.94.0 and 1.2
MAME Version: Based on MAME 0.94 (March 2005) or (for 1.2) Based on MAME 0.106 (May 2006)
    Size: 11.6GB (0.94.0) Size: 14.8GB (1.2)
    Romsets Emulated: 6166

Yeah, I was struggling to get the AdvanceMAME 1.2 (Mame .106) sets working with any reliability. I'd get a game or two working, but the others wouldn't work at all. :o

If you're using a romset that was created using clrmamepro from a much more recent set, there can be issues from what I've read. There shouldn't be, as clrmamepro is supposed to checksum everything, but apparently its not so perfect in reality.

Ah maybe Steve would send you an SD card image already setup. You would just need your own backup Roms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,729 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Mame romsets are a pain in the holio.. Just pick your favorite 100 or so games and NEVER upgrade Mame.. ever..

Unless someone gives you a shiny tested known working awesome romset :)

Are we allowed talk mame Roms? Can you actually buy these games?

Anyway I am having trouble installing sorcer striker on the ouya it just won't god damn work! Any ideas?

Any links to these rom sets your talking about? Particularly ones that include the game I mentioned.

I dont think rom talk is allowed, check the charter in the Arcade and Retro forum.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055036214
NO ROM REQUESTS (Console games usually come in this format)
NO IMAGE REQUESTS (Amiga or PC games usually come in this format)
    NO LINKING TO ROM SITES
    NO LINKING TO WAREZ SITES

What Mame version do you have on the Ouya?

I've been using the same Mame32 and romset for what must be at least 10 years! Everything just works perfectly.

Anything new (like new cave releases) I'll just pick up a new version to play them specifically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I'd be the same when it comes to playing them on the PC, but trying to get them running on the Pi is a pain!

    http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?7002-MAME4Droid-David-Valdeita-Loureiro
MAME4droid (0.139u1) is developed by David Valdeita (Seleuco), port of MAME 0.139 emulator by Nicola Salmoria and TEAM. MAME4droid (0.139u1) emulates arcade games supported by original MAME 0.139u1.

    http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?2189-Mame-on-ouya
mame4all or mame4droid works. Remember that you need the romset 37b5 or 37b11.

Conflicting answers there, i used Mame4ALL and 0.137b i think.

You can talk about ROMS, its just linking to rom sites or roms is prohibited.

You should try downloading the mame4droid 0.139u1 Romset.

That collection of roms is specifcally designed to work with Mame4droid.

Just search on the naughty sites and you might find it. ;)

MAME4ALL and MAME4DROID are two different android versions of MAME.

MAME4ALL is designed to run on older less beefier devices.
It uses the 0.37b version which is extremely old, not to be confused with version 0.139u1 which is more recent.

Be sure to use the newer MAME4droid as theres a **** load more compatible roms for it.
