I used to regularly watch CGR weekly but havent checked it out in a good while. Possibly due to all the current gen gaming the last six months.

    Must hit him up!

Was totally game to pre-order one today. Dream price was 200-300. Realistic price preference 300-400. Tolerable price would have been the 500 mark. But 700 on a piece of tech with various competitors on the horizon and no sign of a definitive killer app...

Hopefully the revolution will be happy to wait a while :pac:

Have been offine for the last few days, 700 quid for the Oculus?? Christ almighty. Plus the fact a lot of folks will need to upgrade their PC to some degree - thought I had read it might require 4 USB3 ports? Wouldn't have thought that's all that common on mobos these day.

Edit: it's ok guys I think I found one on amazon here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B001IKITQS/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2CNEO1H05SNU4 worth it?

Maybe some of you guys might be able to recommend something for me.

I'm looking for a multi component to hdmi box, minimum of two systems connecting. Anyone know of a decent one at a decent price anywhere?

Had a quick scan on amazon but seem to be just one Component connection per unit.

Any help is very much appreciated as always

I've been working crap shifts in work since just after Christmas, and just now had a chance to set up the Xbox One. Its so big that I would honestly be sceptical if they ever released a slim version...

First time seeing one in person, and it's the same height as the PS4 with the controller on top that's sitting beside it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,388 ✭✭✭Doge

And the idiot engineers STILL failed to for the power supply inside it despite how big it is! Microsoft truly suck when it comes to hardware.

I wish I had a picture of my face when I saw that power brick, ha. It's the same size as my Orange guitar amp head...

It's certainly not the most elegant of designs, but if it keeps them cool so be it :o Rather that than a repeat of the RRoD saga...

Going by current Microsoft trends in designing Xbox consoles, this is a confident projection of what the follow up to the Xbox One will look like....

Ha, once we don't see current equivalents of these I don't care much

Honestly, I'd be more confident of the XBO being a cooler & happy console inside, than the PS4 is.

Not hard really considering it's about the size of an ATX Tower PC! :pac:

As I said, if that saves me having to replace it in three years then fine by me :) The PS4 certainly looks the better, but time will tell if there's a price to pay for that. I must admit though, so far so good on both counts - there doesn't seem much in the way of failures does there?

Ive had my ps4 crank up the fans the odd time when im playing Fallout but I've had it over a year now with with probems!

They both seem to be doing very well in terms of reliability alright! :)
And with each board revision are getting even better when it comes to cooling.

I have very limited space for current and last gen consoles in my attic, so the big bootied xbone with its external PSU would be frowned upon!

I have to say though that in terms of GUI, the xbox has a much clearer layout than the playstation, at least with the previous generation. It has been improved on the PS4 very much so, but still could be overhauled.

The area around the TV here is getting crowded.
    Sky HD box
    PS4
    Xbox One
    PS3
    360
    WiiU
    WDTV live box
And a PS2 slim and Retron5 tucked away in the press beneath.
I just can't move the 360 and PS3 upstair yet!

I've a similar problem in reverse. The missus was complaining as I kept on dissapearing upstairs to play the snes and GameCube on the pvm you recommended so the whole lot came downstairs yesterday:-)

Now around my tv lies the snes, GameCube, ps4, WiiU, OUYA, skybox, Samsung Bluetooth speaker I'll try fit them all in this pic:-)

The pvm and retro stuff packs awAy out of site while I'm not using it thank god.

I think a couple of people here have the Retron 5. Is it worth getting to have as an all in one unit for testing the carts it supports? Whats the scanline emulation like on an LCD.
I have a couple of places I store my retro gear that's not my house, and a small LCD and Retron 5 might be really handy to have stashed in them for when i do my annual weekend of testing all my crap :)

£115 seems to be the cheapest I can find for the Euro version(which seems to have skipped most of the US release bugs and hardware issues). Anywhere else cheaper, I'll need 2 or 3, so need them as cheap as possible.

At the end of the day, they are simply android emulation boxes.
Pop in a cart, it is dumped in the memory and you get to play the games with original controllers.
    That's it.
Now, it does it really well, in my opinion.
The scanline effect is just right, not too intrusive and makes retro games look pretty good on a modern display.

The updated firmware on the Retron5 means it starts much faster and is far more stable.
Another thing to keep in mind is it will not play any of your Everdrive carts, as it dumps the game rom in before running it.
Also, the save game system isn't working like it was supposed to. Originally you were supposed to be able to upload your saves from the cart to the Retron memory, use them and, when finished, upload the new save game to the cart, this almost never works!
The net result is, if you are going to play Chrono Trigger, pick your Snes or Retron to play it on and stick to it!

Hmm, its that dumping of the cart to rom and emulating I'm worried about(as opposed to using emulation to run the cart directly). It's fine for what it is of course, but if I wanted to use the Retron to test say 700-1k carts or so, would it be a valid test? I think maybe no.

Basically what I want to do is test each normal cart for 10-20 seconds and the rare/pricey stuff for a bit longer, that's my usual way of doing it. It's just enough to make sure all is basically ok and move on to the next game. With the Retron, as soon as you stick the cart in it dumps the rom(i think) and everything after that is just using that rom, not the cart.
While the fact it can dump the cart to rom is a good sign the cart is ok, its not quite as valid a test as I'd like.

Looks like I'll be going around with a bag of consoles, pads, power supplies, video cables and a small lcd again this year :0(

Is there any usb device(s) that would allow you to run the ROM directly from the cart?

There's the retrode, i think i actually have one in a press somewhere. I think that was just megadrive/Gen and SNES/SFC though.

Well, the Retron is only getting it's working code from the cart itself, and it will show up borked carts.
That said, it's GB/GBA slot seems a little on the unreliable side, at least for me, though the NES and Famicom stuff work great.
Never had any problems with Snes and MD titles either.
How about getting one of the cheaper multi cart devices, the ones that run the carts on clone hardware?
At least then you'll see if the games are working or not, and they are always running from the cart itself.
Maybe the Retron 3? Snes, Nes and MD?

I'll look into the older retron type devices and see what they offer. Running the cart on clone hardware would be good enough for me to say the cart is good and working, so I'd be happy with that. If i could get something to test the NES/famicom, SNES/sfc(Supaboy helps here, but is not great with the PAL stuff) and Genesis/MD(the Nomad helps here) that would be most of the work done.

It'll take ages to test so many carts, but its worth it I think. And if i can get one device to test them all I'll be a happy camper. I dont particularly like hanging around for hours at these storage places, lots of weirdos doing weirdo things in some of them! Seen a guy doing a poo in a bucket in his locker one time, with his locker door open(they have toilets at these places by the way) :0/
