Do the ones with wind info pull from a local source, or same airport source?

do the gps satellites transport local weather data as well, or do the newer Garmins read from multiple satellites?

Garmin's website reads the weather data from a source on the internet, probably just looks up the airport closest to your start point, the GPS satellites just give position and time, no local weather data is transmitted.

Was hitting 60 kph coming down Howth summit with the wind in my face, and momentarily felt bike wobble out of control.

Think I'd better learn to keep eyes on road and not Garmin when going this speed, although I blame it for pushing me as you subconsciously feel pressure to keep going as fast as possible, which is probably the point. Says I burnt through 1k calories in an hour but I reckon it was more than that due to oncoming breeze. Perhaps this will be adjusted if I upload the data.

Probably a topic for "tell us about your cycle today", but that's some speed into the wind, can never get over 50kph when into the wind coming down there. Fairplay.

Anyone buy the winter gloves, what are they like?

    Anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,349 ✭✭✭jon1981

    Anyone?

Bought 2 pairs (hi-viz and black). They seem sturdy and well put together. Nice and snug, thermal lined too. I guess it will be a few weeks/months before they are truly tested but beyond a visual review I can't say anymore at this stage.

    Do they look/seem waterproof?

You can feel some sort of membrane in there alright, I would say they'll stand up to a short shower (20-30mins?!?). I wouldn't be banking on them for a 3 hour spin in the lashes of rain at that price. The stitching doesn't seem to be too exposed either, which is usually where the leaks happen.

For 7.99 it's worth the risk and not the end of the world if they don't turn out to be.

Bought the weather proof jacket, lobster gloves, balaclava. I was really disappointed the waterproof legs weren't in at all.

I had plans on buying the trainer too, but picked this up on amazon, it looks very similar, but you don't need a trainer skewer, which is nice! I did have to but the wheel stand seperate though.

Gave the lobster gloves their first outing today, didn't agree with me at all. Will be going into the pile of stuff I never use again.

:) What is the purpose of the lobster glove?

I think having your fingers together keep them warmer, but personally I found it really awkward to use the brakes and gears. I have fairly small hands which might be factor.

Few of everything except the Garmins left in the Aldi on Trinity St., Wexford

Were there any turbotrainers there. Newtown Road were all out of them

To stop lobsters pinching you when you handle them of course..

Done 50k with the aldi bib tights today, the chamois is half way up your back with little or no protection for your ugly bits..

I find it hard to lean over low enough while cycling to catch the buggers - any tips?

did anyone buy any of the merino wool base layers?
    thoughts if so?
    thanks

I went on Thursday afternoon for a look. Surprised that the cycling stuff didn't take up more of the tray space. Anyway, didn't buy anything - I find the DHB stuff on Wiggle fairly bombproof for a little more money. Know my size, know my fit!

The bib shorts have never been up to much in either ALDI or LIDL. The base layers are fine - I've bought one or two over the years. The winter jacket looked good for the money but there was a lot going on with the layers. It felt heavy and I guess it may prove to be very sweaty on any day the sun is shining during Autumn/winter

Aldi in Rathmines had 2 or 3 yesterday lunchtime. Might be worth ringing them to see if they still have any.

Yeah, got one of them, wore it this morning with just my Galibier Mistral over the top, it seems fine, I was quite toasty in the fog at 8C.

The weave on the merino appears to be greatly improved, the first time they offered merino base-layers in looked something akin to an anaemic Aran sweater.

Jesus christ I bought the leg warmers but can't seem to figure out which is right and which is left. Anyone know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭Einstein?

Have used the leg warmers for over 150k now they're really good. I think the bit with the reflective strip goes on the outside of your leg...

Was out for a spin this afternoon and saw a lad who had obvs been to Aldi and was trying out his purchases. Hi viz waterproof helmet cover, hi viz waterproof jacket. Unfortunately it was 18 degrees and sunny. Judging by redness of face he may have been testing the winter jacket and merino base layer under the water proof too. ðŸ˜႒ðŸ˜႒

There is a slight bend in them to match your leg while cycling'ish.
Zipper to the outside, reflective bit should be at the back then, more or less.

Same as in the pic. Even the arm warms have the slight bend but in the other direction.

I'm heading out now all toasty in them :)

Much better than the old ones. In fact, pretty good. I rode one in varying wind/temps last Friday under a SS jersey and was kept plenty warm.

I got the pro ones last year and that was what I found too. Material was good and warm, pad itself seemed reasonable but location was all over the place.
There was a review of aldi bike gear in the Guardian last week, raved about the jerseys but had exact same complaint about bib tights.

reflective part should be facing forward and if you look inside there is more fleece on the front part

these are the only things i bought from aldi. used today for the first time and they are ok. silicone grips on the outside don't really help shorts from moving but they never slipped down my leg. so far so good but we'll see what happens after a few washes
