Why is it so difficult to get a 1 litre bottle of rn0720 5w30 oil for top ups as I'll need one soon. RN0720 spec oil is very difficult to get in general most places don't stock it fullstop. I suppose I may try a Renault dealer although chances are they will only have 5 litre drums which I don't want and if they do have one litre drums they will probably be looking for stupid money for it.

I kind of got a shock this morning when I checked the oil level on the computer and it down 2 bars out of total 6 bars. I mean I checked it 2 weeks ago and it was reading full. I tried dipping it for oil but the stupid dipstick is just constantly completely covered in oil no matter what you do it's basically useless. I may sort something soon as I don't want to get caught out with low oil and no oil to put in it.

Sounds like it might be worth buying the 5 and decanting it into a 1 litre to keep in the car

I suppose I would normally always do that but I always service my own cars but I'm going bringing this one to a main dealer for its next service in December so I'll be a long time using 5litres of oil on top ups (I would hope anyway) so kind of a waste but sure I'll see what they have when I'm back in Kilkenny next Friday.

Oil never goes to waste. Always good having a 5l in the shed

I have about 4 litres of 5w30 oil in the shed vw 507 spec. But it's not RN0720 so not much good to me.

Honest question. Do these specs really matter?

They do when you have a dpf anyway as one shot of the wrong non low ash content oil your dpf is fcuked. With older stuff I suppose in alot of cases once you have the viscosity right it should be ok. But I'd personally always use the right spec especially on a modern Diesel engine as they can be fussy.

Ah yes. Daysul. Probably not as much of an issue on a petrol so?

No it wouldn't be as serious but now a lot of newer petrols are becoming more complicated a lot are now turbocharged for example. I suppose it depends on car no blanket answer but for any car you need the right grade and viscosity or your at nothing I.e. Semi/ fully synthetic 10w40 etc. then specific specs ie vw507 spec their importance kind of depends on the car. Its as easy to buy the right oil as the wrong one really once you look it up and know what the car requires.

I find the dipstick decent on the Focus (mk2) never had an issue with it coming out all covered in oil.

The 1.5 dci seem very hard on the oil. Could be a theme with some of these smaller diesel engines. No experience of others but have heard of a few of them having problems with sludge like the infamous 1.6 hdi/tdci. My dads seems to turn the elf 5w30 it to black tar after about 10k km. Turns it black instantly without even driving anywhere after a service. Changed the oil just short of 12k km last time due to laziness and stuff and it was starting to go real sludgey. Won't be leaving it to be grand next time! The oil in my 1.8 tdci focus on the other hand is still golden looking since it's service 1k km ago despite having done 3 times the mileage and it's service interval is double that of the laguna. The 2.5 tdi in my transporter was the same. Didn't blacken the oil until about 5k km.

The blackening could be caused by a bigger amount of oil not draining out of the engine during an oil change. Chances are if there is enough left it will just make the rest of the oil black too.

Possibly holds oil somewhere but I drained it really well last time for a few hours. The bung is right on the bottom of the sump too and it took the full 4.8 litres to fill. It's more the condition of it after 10k km that would worry me. I think some are on a 30k km interval...

Tbh in all the diesel we've had I've never seen one with golden oil they go black almost instantly. I dipped it there again and got a proper reading its 1/3 down between max and min mark so it is certainly use a bit of oil as I can't see any leaks. 9k km on it since the last service so wouldn't have been topped up at all. I suppose there is almost 80k miles on my one so a bit of oil being burned is expected but I'll be keeping a much closer eye on it now and dip it weekly.

I was thinking of getting elf 5w30 as that meets the spec and id imagine it's what the car get when in the main dealer. Just when your doing your dads Laguna do you get the oil in the main dealer and do you know do they sell 1 litre as well as 5 litre and what are they like price wise for it.

That has always been the same with any diesel since time began.
Fill in new oil, start the key-pitch black. Normal.
As for right grade oil, I always make sure it's the EXACT same one. I don't even like it if it ends in /b instead of /a. Would it matter? I don't care to find out. I've been giving it the exact right grade from day one, that's 120k km to 340k km and never an issue with the engine.
I see oil like medication, all pills look the same, but take the wrong one at your peril.

Ye using the elf 5w30. There's a lower grade 0700 5w30 so make sure you get the gold label one. Not sure if they do 1 litres bottles. 5 litres is around 40 incl vat. The 0720 is a very hard spec to find online or anywhere else so I just get it there. I was thinking of going for the 5 40 next time as his has no dpf and can take either.

I've had 2 engines now that don't. Thought the engine in my transporter was just a freak but the focus one seems to be the same.

Nice one thanks I'll go to the main dealer and go for the 0720 I have to use 5w30 due to dpf.

That would make sense to me. Having owned a few Fords, that is pretty much what they do.
The last diesels before that were 80's VW 1.6 units.

Anyone know where I could sell a driveshaft with a broken outer CV joint? Do places that refurbish them take them?

This is the motors forum. You can only drink when you're abroad on holidays or the car is broken! :pac:

haha that's mad. my grandparents house is just out of shot in his cover photo, i grew up around there.

it's not as sacrilege as it seems imo. that car would probably have never seen the road again with a bit ignorant petrol motor, at least with the diesel, even if it's not as good a drive, someone will enjoy that jag for another few years.

in other motoring news, i see tesco are doing the wonder wheels "kit" for €7.50 which is pretty reasonable and also genuine leather chamois for €1.50... i wouldn't be too pedantic about detailing so i would consider those good value.
