Not tried Bein FR (or the new Bein ES for that matter). The MENA player and all the DRM and nonsense is so off-putting it's probably not worth the time any more (says me who keeps returning to them ).

I've gone with PLP on a monthly for now, see what the story is with them. Still no news from the good folks at Star yet regarding a package for this season. :(

Anyone seen anything from Star Sports yet? Their website still shows no packages (they had the F1 pack up until this week). Are they blocking smart DNS and VPN now?

With Sky losing La Liga, I'm not sure what to sub to now if Star is gone. Bein is dreadful and none of the Barcelona La Liga games are in English any more.

What's the best channel to watch la liga?

I was going to suggest Star but something odd is going on there. The football pack surely has to be available? The Barcelona match is live on it now but I can't play it without a sub.

No packages are available it says on their site. That is with a DNS service and VPN in use too.

I guess Bein is the next best but not many games are in English and the new player is awful and HDMI output is locked down.

Not sure what other options are out there now. Anyone?

I presume that if BT have la liga then Setanta should have it too, can I get Setanta/BT over satellite without going through UPC or sky?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,037 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

Phew! I was starting to lose hope on Star. Just checked again today with an Indian VPN and the same thing happened, no packages available. I would think it a little odd that they removed the F1 pack too, unless it's due to return (perhaps at a discount?) after the current season break?

Contemplated BT Sport. The monthly fee is a bit much, but I supposed better than running a bunch of other services at almost the same cost. I'd keep Star as a backup though, always. Their coverage of La Liga last season was awesome and rarely let me down, unlike their EPL coverage.

Fingers crossed those packages come out this week then! :)

Looks like Sky Sports has La Liga and Copa del Rey for the next three seasons.

    http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11827/9935230/sky-sports-awarded-la-liga-for-another-three-seasons

Anyone got any news on Star? :(

Getting word that Star are offering EPL, Bundesliga and IPL for free this season? If that's true I can only imagine how pulverised those streams are going to get.

No mention of La Liga there though. Can anyone confirm if the above is true and if Star have lost La Liga rights? Looks like Bein is my only hope for La Liga, or Now TV and a Sky Sports pass. :(

So what's the best option in terms of quality and price? I just checked Now TV and it's as expensive as sky sport so what's the point really?

I guess that's just sky hedging their bets - and ensuring they have a presence in the market as it continues to evolve. It's going to be incredibly difficult for them to stay out in front in the same way as they have done for years via dvb-s.

I guess we won't know until tomorrow. Even then, if star subscriptions become too popular, will the EPL intervene (as they did with Al Jazz/Bein Sports)?

What's the drill for getting a Star subscription? Do you have to use a vpn? Is the stream quality still poor?

If Star really is serving up football for free, it'll just get overloaded and destroyed. For EPL I wouldn't bother as the streams were not too great. La Liga coverage (for me at least) was wonderful last season. I'd pay top dollar for the level of coverage Star had, no bother.

I just use DNS for Star. I did have to use a VPN to get it going a couple of times last year towards April/May. Perhaps they were testing lockouts then?

Star were my crown jewel last year for La Liga. Really don't want to lose them but if it happens, in my personal situation I might just get a NOW box and buy packs of day passes in the bundle discounts, maybe save a few bob that way if the NOW route is the only way to go. Use up the passes on Barcelona match days and then just get another pack of passes.

Wouldn't touch Bein any more, they are dreadful, given them too many chances now. NBC is no good as they don't show La Liga so options really are limited... :(

to log into nbc you use the like of a comcast account and they have the us version of bein sports who have la liga not sure how much they show but streams on xfinity only need vpn for activating

Star arent taking any new subscriptions apparently so that will stop it becoming too popular. Was looking at the Ashes there on it and the quality using Internet Explorer was pretty good, Chrome wasnt too good! I signed up to a VPN for 24 hours free (connected straight away with 7mb) so I will be able to tell if it works for the EPL tomorrow. If it does that is me sorted for nothing, result!

So if you had a sub last season are old subscribers being offered one? My login still works but no packages or renewals are showing.

Or do we just get it all for free now? Confusing! :)

People have installed the app and were watching the Ashes for free too! Just have to wait until tomorrow for EPL.

I didn't use Star much last year, just for FA Cup. Was using PLP for EPL, but they have said they will be charging people again for the entire season (even if you pay monthly) so will wait a bit to see.

Finally caved in and bought Bein for the year. Deal on for ~€95 per year right now. I really couldn't recommend it though, I'm using a Maxthon browser to pop out the video in the hope of watching full screen but the streaming quality is woeful at the moment.

STG.Otaku has a lot more information than me but my starsports sub expired in June and haven't been given the option to renew. Looks like that is dead in the water.

Luckily I have a sub to fox/NBC so I should be OK for the premiership but other leagues are beyond my reach it seems.

Best of luck to everyone for the next season, it's been painful trying to get sorted for the season but it's somewhat comforting to know a lot of us are in the same boat.

When this thread started in May 2011 this was the opening post:

I'm looking to set up Al Jazeera Sports in time for the Copa America I already have an 80cm dish. I'm looking for some information regarding the type of subscription and types of receivers I would need. I'm looking to do this as cheap as possible (no HD needed here!). All help will be greatly appreciated

It just shows how technology has moved when in the last year or so there has hardly been a mention of satellites and dish sizes. I don't think the current discussion which is all about IPTV services belongs in the Foreign Satellite forum. But there probably isn't any other forum more appropriate.

I agree with your comments, but I think this is because, in the mindset of protecting the football and allegedly the "brand",in relation to the footprint of dishes and selling it further overseas, theoretically outside these footprints and the speed of change of technology such as android boxes, MAG250 etc and the simplicity of access to these has led to people moving away from dishes.

They are on the verge of shooting themselves in the feet, in relation to restricting viewing for those within the European footprint.

Personally I much prefer to watch a match on a feed, but each to their own.

PLP looks top notch so far. Got it on my AFTV. Looks great!

I can't get the Star app to work. It says the match is free but the video errors out. Anyone tried Star yet?

I am using a laptop so not the app but it looks good, not as good as PLP but not by much. No blurring like last season! And it is free!!

And at least you get a decent build up.
