Has anyone figured out what NX stands for?

Next as in the Next Nintendo Console

That's boring. What does it REALLY stand for :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

It's only a codename, so the answer probably is as simple as 'Next'.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,150 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

I prefer speculating to what it could mean rather than just a codename

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

In that case, it means 'New Xenomorphs', and it's designed to wipe out humanity.

N= Nintendo X=cross as in a hybrid, that what I was thinking....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,946 ✭✭✭McLoughlin

    Nintendo Xperience

Its not the letter X but multiply as in multiplying 2 consoles together home console by portable handheld console

Nintendo X as in roman numeral X ie Nintendos 10th console, the first 9 being
    nes
    snes
    n64
    gc
    wii
    wiiu
    virtual boy
    game boy
    ds

    thinking too much ain't I ?

That was what I thought of too. And the platform will incorporate both console and handheld.

I thought it was common knowledge that NX means Half Life 3 exclusivity?

Nintendo Xtreme, all mature content, all day and every night at home and on your hands. Radical man!

Nintendo Cross. So any third party game released on it will have Nintendo characters. Just wait for Nintendo X GTA VI

I thought it was Nintendo Cross(over) too.

A hybrid of handheld and home console..

    Nintendo NX
As in Annex. So Nintendo are going to seize a large and valuable piece of the gaming market that currently belongs to Microsoft or Sony, much like Russia did to Ukraine with the Crimea, and then act like they've done nothing wrong. I'm thinking one day you'll log onto PSN and see a green pipe rise out of the bottom of the store, Petey Piranha will stick his chops out and start chewing up your existing game library, then he'll ****e out a NES VC title for you to play while you contemplate what exactly the **** is going on.

makes sense when you read this old news report http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/16/nintendo-to-merge-handheld-and-console-divisions-by-next-month/

    Wow,
In a 2011 interview, Miyamoto noted Nintendo ought to be "structured" to operate without him before he'd leave the company.

I've seen some people online thinking the NX could be a host of devices, like a home console, handheld, 'phone' but I doubt it, a tablet, pc etc.

I kinda agree, X everything, then the QoT product(s) could interact with NX products too. But there will deffo be a home console at least.

I just want Ninty to get up to speed with the other guys and keep making their own great games, not much to ask is it? :)

I got something to back up the "handheld/home console" thing I'm thinking the NX will be:

The Dragon Quest XI announcement, followed by backpeddling.

The 3DS version has both a 2d top-down style and 3d style view.
NX in home mode plays games of ps4-ish standard, and then just the controller/in handheld mode plays the 3ds version.

    The straws have been grasped.

I'd kinda believe that too, but I would like the handheld version of the NX to be at least a bit stronger than the 3ds, not vita strong, just a little more.

It'll be a rebadged PS4, but with Nintendo IP.
    Or the equivalent of.
They would make pots of money and we'd have a console that could play all the third party stuff as well, if we got bored with the gaming goodness from the big N.

    http://www.nintendo-insider.com/2015/08/21/nintendo-file-patent-for-a-game-console-without-an-optical-disk-drive/

New patent information from Nintendo release could it be a clue to the NX its a games console that includes an internal hard disk drive but without an optical disk drive with support for an external hard disk drive is mentioned as well as SD memory cards

So no discs but games on SD cards as I cannot see a digital only system unless its some kinda physical virtual consolke

So, in effect, Nintendo are going back to carts again!
    WooHoo!
    No, wait....

On the other hand it could be just a patent for the tech behind a new handheld.
I can't see them abandoning optical media though, it's cheap and easy to produce, for the amount of storage it offers.

I think I read it was for a stationary console so not mobile. Unless they mean no stability updates needed. :)

optical media won't go away allot of consumers don't use Internet or have fast enough speeds for digital downloads so still a need for optical media

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,830 ✭✭✭Nollog

They use a hard drive in Wii demo units.

Likely just patenting a disk only demo unit.
    I hope at least.

    http://mynintendonews.com/2015/08/24/nintendo-has-registered-achievement-sharing-with-recording-patent/

NX might have an achievement system like the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4,

I hope they're tied to something like stamps on the Miiverse. I always liked actually getting something for achieving things.

To me that doesn't sound like the kind of thing you should be allowed to patent. A console without a disc drive? How is that patent worthy? C'mon.

I don't know, but I can't see nintendo creating a console without physical media. It's worth too much to them.

    Collectors etc..

There has to be some other angle to it, I don't think the infrastructure is there yet in enough places to warrant a digital only console. It will happen, possibly the next generation, but to do it next year would be a mistake imo. It's puzzling, because proprietary media is expensive to produce in comparison to dvd/blu ray. Unless there's a 'parent' device somewhere in the chain, that can stream media to this thing in the patent description?

Its no disc drive but has card slots so this device maybe has games on sd card/cartridge so it would have physical media and a sd card would hold more than a disc.

So its interesting if they could games on SD card but SD cards would be more expensive wouldn't they ?
