O'Connell Steet was an AWFUL lot worse before they redid all the footpaths and planted trees. It'll hopefully pick up once that shopping centre is built...

Yea it looks nice, until you look at all the shopping units up close.

They ruined Grafton St. with that horrendous paving. The red brick was really nice. :(

Yeah, I remember being privvy to the plans for the rejuvenation project in 1999. The plans have actually been adhered to quite closely. I have the planning book at home somewhere. Only difference is they were going to erect these weird columns opposite the GPO, and the plan for the spire was completely different.

Yeah the actual retail units are poor on O'Connell st... It's really just a traffic by-point at the moment, and a public transport hub.

The thing is you can't blame anyone for that - these things happen organically quite a lot. If I was opening a new retail business I wouldn't put it on O'Connell st, would you?

However, I would open a tourist spot. They need to look at the planning for the area again and allow more pubs/restaurants there, there's an absolutely huge footfall from tourists there because of the hop-on-hop-off tour buses. They need to make more of the tourist visitor centres and attract the likes of TGI's or Hard Rock cafe's... Those are the kind of businesses that would do well.

Yeah but probably a nightmare to keep maintained with the footfall.

They've been making a dog's dinner of that street for a few years now, tearing it up and interrupting traffic. The council should be taken to task for the absolute mess they make every time they try to do any ground works; always slow and often no improvement visually. It's rare enough you can walk the street without seeing some section cordoned off for works.

The red brick just isn't really designed for pavement - I think it was pretty hard to maintain and wore badly. But it gave the street a great character and the new one is bland and boring.

I'm super interested to see how College Green develops. In my ideal world it would be closed to all traffic except trams.

    Council. Taken to task.

Excuse me while I spend the remainder of the day rolling around the floor in stitches.

This is the kind of area where I think a directly elected mayor would be quite nice.

    **** you Fingal.

The council need to incentivise it.

The new paving on Grafton street is pretty slippy when it's wet.

Nice I'll get the GF to read this before the next episode so I don't have to keep pausing it to tell here what's happening

Indeed. The nonsensical element did strike me as I read back over it. It'll never happen but it's a pathetic situation.

They recently redid the footpath along the coast road in Raheny/Clontarf bordering St. Anne's park. It took them 2-3 weeks to do about 800m of path. Absolutely laughable and should have been done in a fraction.

These car insurance companies drive me crazy. You go online to get a few quotes just to see what the field looks like and within a minute they are ringing you.

Yep had the same thing myself this week, it's a f***ing pain. Also a pain having to fill out all your details over and over. I wish there was one site I could give my details to and then say check all these sites using my details

Also they've stopped generating quotes when you put 0871234567 as the contact number too, baxtards

Not surprising, as the 085 version of that actually belonged to someone I knew.... Eventually he sold on the number because it was literally ringing every few seconds with just random people ringing it.

Because of ivf, and then crumlin with my daughter, I've been in Dublin for 13 years, basing myself on Parnell St, either in jury's inn, or the kingfisher across the road. I've seen the area change, and I love it! I'd look out my window in the hotel and gaze down on Moore Street and it would amaze me with the hustle and bustle starting at dawn and going on until after 6. The ethnic diversity in the whole area is marvelous, the food is out of this world!
I enjoyed walking O'Connell St, watching tourists, seeing people enjoying themselves, even watching the local skangers roaring at each other gave me a laugh
I'll tell you, after cancer, thinking you may not be able to have kids and all the other normal stresses of life, this part of Dublin kept me fckin sane.......ish
    ;)

Mate. I'm sorry for your troubles. I really am. And I get what you're saying. And I'm sorry for my morbid sense of humour, but....
My first thought was - O'Connell St, it's better than cancer.

    Sorry. All the best.

....but according to some here, O'Connell St is worse than cancer :):)

Posted some rugby related sport science in the General Rugby thread -
All about the referee's impact on the game
Injuries in rugby – how often are players injured, when they are injured, and how seriously?
Possession in rugby – why rugby has been a sport where the team with the ball is LESS likely to win
The physiological demands of rugby – how far do they run, how often do they tackle, how much energy...

Discuss them there if you wish, but Ross Tucker (author of the articles above) was on Off-The-Ball last night discussing drugs in cycling. Worth a listen to the clip and a read of the additional info here too.

The interview comes off the back of this piece here where Ross questions the plausibility of the 'Froome & Sky cycling story' so far...

Another 'pixel in the picture' is a really good analogy. Suspicions, deja vu and cycling having another super-human team...

    Fake number

I'm watching extreme railroads on C4, has anyone heard about that Japanese train the Maglev, that goes at over 600km/hr that floats above the track and uses magnetic force to move?

I love that train...I love trains in general. I must be the only person who loves everything about the London underground..stations, the trains themselves, even down to the tiles (was the only tile I insisted on for my ensuite). Read a great article recently on the maglev (think it was the guardian app (best app on my phone )..how many more ((( ))) can I use in a post?
