Strange that Eircom seemed to say they no longer use ARD keys (2014) for finding addresses .... so wonder what they are used for now ....

I can confirm that eircom no longer provide Ard Key details. Ard key details are no longer used by eircom for finding an address or specific lines.

ARD key is still in use.

Sky seem to refer customers back to eircom retail to get ARD Keys for installations, for some reason.

Wicklow exchange has also gone green I noticed. Checked the eircom upgrade order form and says I can expect up to 40MB. I'm about 420 meters from the exchange as the crow flies. So happy :D

Carrigaline too, tried to sign up but can't yet. VF line check is telling me I should get 47.68MB, approx 700m of cable between me and the exchange.

Is the VF line check you used the line speed check on the "http://www.vodafone.ie/home-phone-broadband/" page

Vodafone will migrate you to FTTH while in contract with them for eVDSL without penalty. That is standard once you stay with the same provider

    No, I used this one:

    http://www.vodafone.ie/utility/broadband/linecheck.shtml?perlico_areacode=021&perlico_number=*******

It doesn't give the level of detail the eircom one does (can't get that to work), just whether you can get it and how fast it's likely to be.

Have they said that definitively? Have eircom said the same (I've asked on their "Talk to..." forum but haven't had a response yet)?

I smell dissapointment on the horizon but will agree to agree for now . There are implied initial install costs for FTTH and it will be interesting to see how they pad it out between supplier and custmer, all we need is one vendor, to say free install and we are all sorted.

My theory on this is - that you are not switching to SIRO (the Vodafone ESB consortium) - SIRO as a wholesaler will supply its services to the suppliers in the domestic market in the same was as ESB Networks supply Bord Gais, Electric Ireland. Aertricity etc or Eircom Wholesale supply Vodafone and other broadband providers. Provided you stay with the same provider I would imagine no penalties for upgrading at the very least.

I second that. According to the SIRO presentation a couple of weeks ago in Dublin, SIRO is a wholesale provider, open to any retailers, similar to Eircom's FTTC network.

As other mentioned in the recent past, I wouldn't be surprised to see UPC, eircom and others selling services using SIRO FTTH network, similar goes to Vodafone selling FTTH in areas where Eircom FTTH is present. This would allow anyone to have customers in areas they do not have network presence.

So by that then are we saying that siro will roll fiber up to each door , or will there be a splice and install fee from curb to home ? I cannot see them doing it like that , they will on first pass im guessing run the street length and install on any addresses already signed up , but for the return for late adopters i would invisage a cost and i dont see the backhaul or mainstay medium provider absorbing it .

Still waiting on Vodafone to ring me to agree a new 18 month contract and to let me know when a engineer will be out. All he has to do is change my socket and set me up at the exchange.

OK - I should be able to upgrade within the contract according to Eircom Reps, but no way of knowing what the install cost might be as these haven't been decided. Think I'll hold off until its clearer what's happening with FTTH (it's supposed to launch in August).

From the presentation they showed at the event, they will roll fibre to a street cabinet or node if you prefer. Then from that cabinet, a single mode fibre will go directly to the customer house, terminating on the ONT.

I presume that they will place the cabinets in advance of customer orders, and when the retailer as an order, a KN/Sierra/other crew will run the fibre from street cabinet to the customer house/business and terminate on the ONT unit.

ordered last week and was quoted 25 down and 7up, by the end of the week it had risen to 50 down and 10 up on the line checker. got it installed today for 25 and 7, should i ring eircom to see if i can be put on a higher profile?

Also will vectoring be switched on the exchange fibre?

A guy came to my door today from Eircom, looks like FTTC is now enabled up on the hill in Cobh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭MediaHaul

    Hi guys,

Does anyone have a link to the line checker (where you enter the phone line number) to see what speeds I can get on fibre?

The link I have from before is dead now and reverts to an eircom generic page
