Yeh feeling a bit edgy about that 5ml myself it has to be said. Have Beermile.com said anything regarding Moosehead?

Also WTF is the deal with 2 different Oz measurements. The U.S. are the only ones bothered with old style measurements so why do they need 2 ways of measuring Oz?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,697 ✭✭✭Chivito550

    12 U.S. oz = 354.88ml
    12 Imperial oz = 340.96ml

So which method of ounces are Moosehead using? If it's US then they translated it by 5ml too little. If it's the imperial oz then they translated by 9ml too much.

Anybody want to waste one of these fine beverages by pouring it into a measuring cup so we know once and for all?

Yep as adrian says 12 Floz is the standard American size we are supposed to use (Americans don't use mls, cms or kms), 350ml is just a bad translation into 'European speak'.

If moosehead is Canada's oldest independent brewery, does that make moosehead a craft beer?

I'd imagine they produce too much to be considered Craft beer, though Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn probably do too.

    5. Competitors must drink canned beer and the cans should not be less than 355ml (the standard can volume) or 12oz (the imperial equivalent). Bottles may be substituted for cans as long as they are at least 12 oz (355 ml) in volume.

^^^^ thats what i read when i looked it up. When i looked up Muler's moosehead it said it was 12 us oz. But on his bottle it says 350 ml. So i looked further into it and founf the moosehead site which clearly states its us fl oz

    Can you post the link?

I'm seeing labels online that say 341ml which would tie into the UK Oz measurement above. Also Canada being part of the commonwealth they may adopt UK rather than US oz measurements.

Somebody will have to measure this out. I'm running out of beers to do it though.

But you can get 2 different beers, both 12 Oz (US) and some will be labeled 350ML and some will be labeled 355ML. I'm pretty sure both contain the same amount of beer.

    http://www.thebeerstore.ca/beers/moosehead-lager

A lot of disturbing references to 341ml for the bottles here, which is exactly 12 UK oz

    Taper madness going on here.

A guy called Shawn Muldrew who ran 6:22 with Moosehead appears on the top 1000 unofficial list but not on the official one. This is concerning.

EDIT: Lucas Agricola appears on the official list with 7:39 using bottles of Moosehead.

Lots of conflicting information. Not just with the above but the uncertainty about which type of ounces are used, cans being quoted as 355 while bottles being referred to as 341 and 350. Would be nice if beermile.com could issue a statement to bring some clarity.

Yeah but it's also likely that different bottles for different markets exist too. In the states they arent going to market an 11.87oz bottle (random figure - not arsed working it out) - they will just have a 12oz bottle. So a lot could depend on where the beer is imported from.

Either way our 12oz - 350ml bottles here don't add up to any of the measurements. You can under declare for sure but not over declare. There's every chance the 350ml bottles here have a fraction more in them. If they don't and only have the UK 12oz = 342ml in them then they are illegal here.

Christ lads, it's a Canadian beer; they are clearly using US fl.Oz.!!
    Wikipedia wrote:
: This results in the Canadian bottles being labelled as 11.5 fl oz in US units when imported into the United States. Because Canadian beer bottles predate the adoption of the Metric System in that country, they are still sold and labelled in Canada as 341 mL. Canned beer in Canada is sold and labelled in 355 mL cans, and when exported to the US are labelled as 12 fl oz.

If it was imperial fl oz they were using it would say 341 ml!!

But if you type in Moosehead Lager 341ml into google then you will see lots of mention of that too.

Remember that we have just acquired sponsorship from Moosehead too, the beermile will henceforth be known as the

    'Moosehead Irish beer-mile championship'

    Back to training talk.

Maybe it's taper madness but I bought 12 moosehead* today and figured it would be a good idea to get in my 6th attempt at 4 straight moosehead lagers** in on the minute.
I nailed my burping technique on this one (rather I was forced to burp a lot involutarily) and got the beers down in 21, 26, 26, 27 seconds. Delighted with that as it felt a good bit easier than on Tuesday night. Bring on the beermile***

    * The offical beer of the Irish beermile Championship

    ** Not a pussy beer

*** officially known as the Moosehead Irish Beermile Championship.

Ok I poured a beer into a measuring cup and it appears to be slightly over 350ml so looks like it is around 355. It's certainly not 341. Phew!!!!

What a waste of a fine beer.

I've also mailed the beermile hq to ask for rule clarification / official sanction of moosehead for this Saturday too.

We’ve a bit of a debate going on here in Ireland about the rules in regards to the volume of the beer.

    Rule 5 states:
    5. Competitors must drink canned beer and the cans should not be less than 355ml (the standard can volume) or 12oz (the imperial equivalent). Bottles may be substituted for cans as long as they are at least 12 oz (355 ml) in volume.

As you’re no doubt aware there are 2 versions of fl oz in use. One US version which works out as 12fl oz = 355 ml or the Imperial 12fl oz which works out at 341ml source here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluid_ounce

Rule 5 is kind of ambiguous in that it says it should be a 355ml can or a 12oz imperial equivalent. Strictly speaking a 12oz imperial equivalent is 341ml. A US 12oz bottle would of course be the 355ml required.

A lot of the lads have trained using Moosehead beer which is labelled here as 12fl oz on the cardboard outer but 350ml on the bottle itself just to make it even more confusing ! We note that Moosehead has been accepted in official records though.

    So can you clarify if:
    1- An imperial 12oz (341ml) is acceptable
    2-Would moosehead labelled as 12oz / 350ml be acceptable
