No need for anyone to beat Shane ,he's perfectly capable of beating himself. He should stay on the European tour for a while, till he learns to win.

He has proven he can win on the European Tour, he joined a small group of people that have the game and bottle to win as an amateur.

Should Furyk have retired up until last weekend? He had gone 5 years without a win!

Your comment demonstrates a lack of understanding of golf imo. Even the best lose way more often than they win. There are a lot of top golfers that have the weekend off... should they switch tours?
And ironically (considering your username), the simple sums would suggest that he has made the smart decision to play the US tour. Despite no win, his prizemoney ytd is way ahead of what it was last year. A top 10 in the US can be as good as a win in Europe.

The matchplay is a WGC event that incorporates both tours. As a top 50 ranked player in the world Shane is an automatic in the field. Why people would knock him is astonishing. He is a great golfer number 1 as his world ranking will tell you. 47th I think but stand to be corrected. He is also IMO a lovely down to earth chap with a lots less ego than some of his fellow pros. He is a great ambassador for irish sport and golf specifically. I really hope he goes on and wins more on tour which ever one it is. Doubt he is too worried about a couple of pathetic individuals knocking him too much anyway.

It depends on how many players finish on 2 points without winning their group. Those players will be in a multiple tie for 17th. Players who finish on 1 point will be in a multiple tie for somewhere around 33rd.

By my reckoning, Shane will get 2.47 world ranking points for finishing in an 18 way tie for 34th. He would have got 4.35 points if he had finished in a 17 way tie for 17th.

Thought he was going to do really well after his first round match, but looking at how GMac was playing he probably played his best golf against Ricky and was spent after that, shame because lots of ranking points available, even for just turning up

He will be disappointed to miss out on a place in the knockouts, but he played some great golf and showed he can mix it with the best. Looking forward to his next outing.

Disappointing to see him losing consecutive holes to pars again when in a great position. Burned some cash and ranking pts there.
Lets hope he has a good showing in the players championship before his return to Europe.

Shane got $63,500 for his efforts this week. Handy points when converted to Race To Dubai as well.

Wish there was the opposite of a thank button for this post!!

give the lad a break, inside top 50 in world!! Top 10 in america has about as much if not more money that win in Europe. One of very few amatures to win on tour and at his home open and all. that takes some bottle!!!! and along with doing all this and playing reasonably well he is enjoying life, getting married and most importantly not forgetting where he came from!

Such a nice, honest, down to earth guy !!

Any idea what it might do to his world ranking?

sadly Shanes reward for only picking up 1 win is to slip outside the worlds top 50 to 51st

Out with Bo Van Pelt and Adam Hadwin (never heard of him) on Thursday, starting on the 10th.

Adam Hadwin was first on the money list on the Web .dot com tour. This is his first season playing on the PGA tour

So he finished on +1 for his first round. Quite a roller coaster. Ricky Fowler said in interview that you have to be very patient on this course......not sure Shane was patient enough...maybe I'm wrong.

The 17th caught him out a bit, but then it can be a very difficult hole to play. Not unknown for players making double digits on that hole

He also had four bogies and five birdies. Not exactly steady stuff, but let's hope he settles tomorrow.

3 over after 8 holes today. Not looking good. Level par makes the cut.

Really could do with making the cut and get some ranking points when he's in these big fields

Very disappointing - hard to see him making the cut now.

He's having a crack at it anyways! Needs to play the last four -2

I reckon Shane will drop 2 or 3 places in the rankings after the Players championship

5 disappointing results since the early season promise when his ranking peaked at 40.

Hopefully the return to Europe will get his season kick started again.

Top 60 in 2 weeks would secure his U.S Open spot.

He may have to qualify for the us open.a lot of players close behind him in the rankings are playing on the Pga and European tour.

There are two cut off points. The first is in two weeks' time on May 25th, immediately after the BMW PGA championship. A semi decent performance by Shane at Wentworth should hopefully be sufficient to keep him in the top 60. Failing that, a good performance in the Irish Open might get him back into the top 60 by the final cut off date of June 15th.
