Ground saturated, cow walks on saturated ground. Cow turns over land with feet. Grass destroyed. No feed.

Not to mention health problems in Cows and calves.

So you have to keep them in the shed? What do they eat then?

    100%

Do you townies know nothing haha?

On a more serious note... we nearly lost a male foal. It was born in dirty ground (silly mare) and picked up an infection via its umbilical cord opening. It was lame for months and my dad spent £1000s on vets bills :(

We have a yard of 5 horses. Eat a fortune of hay in the winter. When we work them and hunt, yes we are awful people, hard feed is used as well.
Cattle get fed Silage and nuts.

My knowledge of farming doesn't go beyond knowing what end of the cow is the head and what end is the arse.

Sorry about that. How's he doing?

Thinking of covering a ISP/Holstien cross mare we have. Cracking mare. Great at eventing but we are getting a bit to old for that carry on.

Are your horses work horses? Or do they do dressage?

Or are you secretly JP McManus?

Funnily enough when I was very young I used to go work on a farm with horses. By work I mean follow someone around and do nothing while sometimes being afraid of the horses themselves.

Good man awec...best laugh I've had in ages!! You need a fortnight in the bog at the turf, a week gathering spuds and a couple of days dosing cattle. You wouldn't want to be wearing a new pair of white runners though!!

Ah! Yes the council does provide the bin service. However my council tax is £170 pm. Fair bit more expensive than the bin services at home I'd reckon! (I also live in the 2nd cheapest council tax area in the UK)

All water provision in England and Wales is privatised. Scotland & NI have Scottish Water* & Northern Ireland Water (public).

Scottish Water looks like the bill comes through alongside the Council Tax

Ah, OK. Pal who was telling me about this is living in Dundee, so that makes sense.

All the horses hunt but three of them do eventing (three disciplines, dressage cross country and showjumping)

The draft is just complete and there is plenty of hustling going on the in free agency market. I think the Lions done well in the draft, they got a load of guys that ranked high in character and hard work. Not a 'win now' draft but a decent long term draft I reckon.

Tbh I thought everyone in Ireland had at least a relative who farmed. I actually don't but have managed to do a few weeks on a farm.
I'm very much a townie but I've driven a tractor up and down a silage pit compacting grass, i've baled, herded cattle to a milking parlour and got them milked and tried to herd sheep. ( practically impossible imo without a working dog).

Also helped out a little in a livery...mainly taking out the old straw and bring in new stuff.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,145 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

When I first read that I thought it said you had milked sheep. :(

Where I worked they had a few other sheep that were being kept for mutton...they were basically pets and were very demanding...always wanted their heads scratched

Bucs are confirmed as going Worst to First with the greatest draft that there has ever been.

Well Roquefort doesn't grow on trees.
