    So... Mayweather or Pacquiao?

I'd love Manny to win but Mayweather looks is great shape, Manny is really starting to look old.... Hard to see how it'll go, hopefully Manny dances around him.

oh trust me, i got as many quotes as i could. Problem is taking the engine out and seperating it from the gearbox takes about 8 hours.

i went to my local mechanic and he said he couldn't do it.

Recommended me another place and they said they didn't want to do it as it was too much hassle and they could service/mot 5 cars in the same time to fix mine.

Rang an independent specialist and he quoted £1200. Rang another a bit further away and he said £900.

Rang the dealer and they said 750 to 950...so i went with them.

    here's the ****ing part
I'd be sick handing over that amount of loot to change a 3.50 part.

Are you sure? I've asked for a cancellation before and got a subsequent call offering me a date/time and asking if I wanted to book it, there was no question of having to accept it or cough up.
I heard all the horror stories of 4 month waits so I rang up in mid-March (NCT due end May), got a date for 29th of that month at 1845, handy time. Must be just in Dublin... ye've too many cars lads!

I haven't missed an appointment myself on that basis but this is what I was told by the employee on the phone on the last occasion that I booked through that method.

43 years of age, never had a car, a license or even sat behind the wheel of a car.... Blind mate of mine laughed at me the other day as he's driven twice :)

I'm driving as long as I can remember. Tractors on the road while still in primary school - check. JCB'S in secondary school - check.

I can even remember at 14 driving an Austin maestro 4 miles home from an auction one night..oul lad bought it and got me to drive it home while he drove his own car back. Get home and asks me what she was like on the road!!

I can see the point of not having a car in Dublin but even then I'd still hate to have to rely on public transport to get anywhere.

    * I also got a go at flying a small 2 seater plane in South Africa...seriously hard yoke to steer!!*

If you are trying to book an nct quickly go on the site after eleven thirty at night, as they block release all cancellations at that time

Last time I did this was in February went on one Tuesday and got a booking for the ffollowing Saturday

Thinking of buying a banger to learn in before going for the test, but getting rid of it and just renting a car at the weekend once I've got the license long enough to rent. Since I never need a car during the week, owning one full time feels like it might be a massive waste of money. Thoughts?

  • Administrators Posts: 55,142 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Prob be more expensive in the long run.

Have you had a look at this?

Suitable for some people, useless for others. Depends on how close you are to some of their spots and how many others would be too.

Genuine question, what with all the oh we're so lucky to live in a country where we can actually vote on whether or not 2 people can get married, until now we've been denying them their basic human rights.......but we can unilaterally be charged for water, across the board, no vote, no referendum...just a fait a complet, ....if that can be done for water.... Why not the right to fckin marry ?

Because marriage is defined in our constitution, water is not, probably because at the time the constitution was written, the right to water involved digging a hole and digging a well.

The constitution doesn't cover utility charges

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,345 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

Well we are charged for water as it is but not enough and in a very stupid way. You pay for what you use makes alot more sense than it being paid for by my wage and if I buy stuff.

Funnily enough I was going through the section in the constitution on marriage on the referendum website and it doesn't say that it's between a man and a woman!

Yeah, we have lots "unenumerated rights" in there. The SC was real big on making them up back in the early days. Basically stuff that isn't written in the the constitution but is still part of it.

How would this referendum passing affect that clause in the constitution that blathers on about the unique contribution of the woman in her role as homemaker? Surely that will have to change?

    Is it 40.8?

This will not change that provision. The constitutional convention have flagged that for amending, but I think they aren't too arsed sorting out a provision that has no actual day to day use in Irish society. I agree with you, it's a pretty bloody stupid provision.

    What's an unenumerated right?

I did laugh when I read the bit about women not working if it effects the family/household as that's not just encountered by single mothers but also a huge amount of families where the Mam and Dad have to work!

One that's not written in the constitution or necessarily specified but that is considered to exist all the same.

The constitution is definitely starting to show it's age but at least it is something we can still amend and update. They will probably never again be able to get anything remotely like enough cooperation to amend the US constitution.

Back in the day (70s and 80s) that provision meant that if you worked in the civil service and got pregnant you got fired! The government had to be seen to be protecting your place in the home, and giving you employment would have been a breach of that duty.

Unenumerated means we didn't actually write them down. People would take a case to the Supreme Court arguing they had a right (for example the right to earn a living) which wasn't in the constitution and the SC would decide whether they thought it was meant to be in the constitution, but Dev had just forgot to write it down.

Paying for water isn't a new thing here. Fianna Fail got rid of it in the 80s in order to get votes.

The problem isn't with water charges - it's the fact that there're different charges for water, waste disposal and local council charges. All of these fall under the same flat rate in the UK - a far fairer idea, in my opinion. Also, **** the USC - a penalty for people who have a job. If the emergency is declared over in the coming months, does that get to go away? I very much doubt it!

    No they don't?

I pay council tax to the council.
I pay Severn Trent Water for the water I use.
I also pay Severn Trent Water for the water that I dispose of.
