Just catching up here Tang - delighted to see you back racing again...your can-do attitude is seriously annoying infectious at times.

Great stuff, looking forward to seeing you move through the gears over the summer

Thanks D, have to be positive with the injuries i've had over past two years. I genuinely love racing, i will never be at the thick end of things but theres something about challenging yourself to do better every time you run that i love, if i beat my myself i'm happy. But we're all like that.

    Monday 20.4.15

    Rest

    Tuesday 21.4.15

    7miles@8.44min/miles in 61min 11secs

Legs felt good after Sundays 5k, no aches or pains thankfully, still kept this nice & easy though, it was a glorious day for running so spent maxim time in the sun that i could. Soaked to the bone with sweat after.

    Wednesday 22.4.14

    Club session 400/400/800/1k/1k/800/400/400.

My first ever club session, nice handy one to start(me hole!!). Knew this was the session from Sunday after the race as i had been talking to one of the lads. 9 turned up for this, one lad was a sub 18min 5ker, another 2 lads hovered between 18.30-19mins after that i didnt know what the rest were like. I was going to stick to my paces regardless, even if i was last, times worked out as follows:

    400's- 89,92,91,90
    800's- 3.08, 3.10
    1k's- 4.00, 4.00

More than happy with how this went, i was 5th out of the 9 for most, 4th for the last 3 reps as one of the lads faded a bit. Have never done a session like this before by myself never mind in company. Enjoyed it thoroughly and felt i got stronger as it went on, but stuck to the paces i wanted to run. No point pushing to hard after Sundays 5k still being in the legs. 1.5mile w/u 1mile c/d. 5.75 miles for total session.

    Today 23.4.15

    4.70miles@9.36min/miles in 45mins 05secs

Legs sore today, spent most of the day painted fences outside so plenty of bending & stretching doing that helped somewhat. Out this evening at 8 bells to get the recovery miles in, lovely evening for a run and still quiet warm. Legs loosened out after a mile and felt good after. Rest day tomorrow.

Epic session, what pace are they meant to be run at? What were the recoveries?

Per McMillan off Sundays 5k time it gives me the following:

    400's- 89-94secs
    800's- 3.06-3.14
    1k's- 3.56-4.09

The recoveries were 90secs standing for 400s, 3 mins standing for 800s & 1ks. Prefer jog recovery myself but they did standing so i done the same.

Yeah nice (consistent!) paces. When I read the session I did a big internal ouch :) It was certainly a baptism by fire!

    Sunday 26.4.15

Enforced rest day, family stuff more important.

    Monday 27.4.15

    7.05miles@8.47min/miles in 61mins 56secs

Easy run & very enjoyable until about 0.25 of a mile left, got dart of pain in my left calf, thought at the time 'ah sure thats nothing to worry about'. I was wrong of course, pain got worse as the evening went on, some tiger balm helped but i could still feel it.

    Tuesday 28.4.15

Rest, calf felt better but didnt risk a run.

    Wednesday 29.4.15

    4miles@8.41min/miles in 34min 45secs

No session this evening as most of the lads are running a 5k in Kinnegad. Not that i would have been up to it, got through 4 miles but the calf was hurting throughout. Currently icing it, will be touch and go if i make Tallaght Sunday morning now. Will rest it till Saturday and try running on it, if i feel pain i'll pull the plug on the 5k!!! Aghhhhhhhh.

Where specifically in the calf tang? Side, back, low, high?

At the rear P, to the right of the calf kind of in centre, literally came out of nowhere.

Very strange to happen on an easy paced run, if it's a small strain or tear. In my experience with calf issues, ice is best followed by compression. No stretching but maybe some light cross friction work or foam rolling. I also find KT tape very useful for relieving pressure.

Been applying ice pack as frequently as i can all day followed by compression socks. Taken few ibuprofen also to help, it has improved pain wise but defo no running on it till at least Saturday afternoon/evening.

+1 on the KT tape. I had problems with my sartorius last year where I couldn't run with the pain. Strapped the leg with KT tape and it worked a treat.

Smart move staying off it for a few days tang. Rest often does the job itself.

Pulling the plug on tomorrows 5k, calf has improved but walking with a bit of a limp now, so running a 5k flat out ain't going to help it. Fearful i will do more damage if i race and not risking that. Think its tunguska who had a bad calf issue for a while and dont want to let it get like that. I was only thinking to myself on a run a few weeks back that the body was getting stronger, oh well.

Depending on how long it takes to heal, i may be re-assessing the Dunshaughlin 10k, i think i'll put in a few solid months of training and look at the Mullingar 10 in July if it takes any considerable time to sort out i.e missing few weeks running. Dont want to be running races when i'm not happy with my fitness.

We're off to France for two weeks next Friday in what will be my first time to leave Irelands green shores since 2008, the year of our honeymoon!! To say i'm like a spoilt child is an understatment!! Marshaling at a local 10k Monday, usually gets a good turnout, hopefully will be the same this year.

P.S I'll give you the glory tomorrow belcarra, but theres a target on your back now!!

Good move. You're getting sense in your old age :p

I was thinking of doing the Mullingar 10m too :D

That sucks tang, but you're being wise. I missed three races this year because of injury and it's no fun but just thinking of the long game. Plenty more races coming up.
