That's great news, I have to say I was very concerned about him as he seemed to be out longer than the "normal" concussion RTPP period. Now all we have to hope for is he doesn't suffer another one.

This stand down period is exclusively an LNR/FFR thing. I'm not sure when it came into force but maybe it was a result of the Florian Fritz debacle last season. So I wouldn't have been concerned that the period was longer/different to what we have seen before.

What nobody has mentioned/talked about is what happens if Sexton gets (*touchwood*) another concussion soon? Will there be another mandatory stand down period?

If it happens during the 6Ns would the LNR/FFR be able to impose a similar sanction.

Actually how come their current sanction applies to the 6Ns?

Obviously Sexton's health comes first but what has the LNR/FFR ruling got to do with Ireland?

Edit - Also is there an actual medical reason for Sexton's rest period to be as long as it is? I'm just wondering if there is a good medical reason for this particular case for Sexton to be missing tomorrow?

Thats the thing about concussions the length can vary from case to case. While a lot of guys will be back in a few weeks there have been athletes who have suffered with concussion symptoms over a year after the injury took place.

It seems to be occurring more commonly in the game these days and each case needs to be handled on an individual basis

I presume not; look at Juan Figallo, banned from playing in France, just moved to Saracens.

But given the current concern over concussions, no way were the IRFU going to ignore this and play him anyway, they'd have been slaughtered for it.

I assume because his employer is in France then the LNR/FFR rules apply to him for that reason.

Not sure of the technicalities, but it certainly seems to be a positive step in the treatment of concussions that they are being taken seriously

I would also think that the IRFU would be putting themselves in a dodgy legal position should Sexton have further concussion issues. Going against the views of a neurologist wouldn't have been seen in a positive light. For all the talk of the attritional and demanding nature of the Top 14 in this instance at least he has been very well treated.

Good point there about the Top 14. I know we would have loved to have him sooner, but I am glad that he seems to have had the very best of advice and the best of care. Let's just hope that he moves on now and can put this behind him.....have a long successful rugby career and most importantly, a long, happy and healthy life.

Sexton cleared to play next week!!

How long will it take him to be match / fit / ready? I can't see him playing the full game against France - he'd be knackered after 60 minutes?

Schmidt saying he is hopefully O'Brien will be fit for France. Must still be in his plans so.

Backrow will be changes and Sexton in for Keatley. I doubt we will make any other unforced changes. SOB needs gametime with leinster IMO

I dunno. He said not starting him was precautionary. I'm not sure he'd be flung straight in against France.

That's just the impression I got but as ROG pointed out there are different rules for O'Brien.

Just saw a bit of RoG at the end, he was trying to explain to the other the return to play rehab players go through and was trying to explain the way SoB will come back better cause he'll be doing 80m runs, down to 60m runs, to 40 and 20s, then tried to explain how every part of his shoulder would have been worked on and that pro players treat rehab differently to old school players, you could see him frustrated by the rest of them not getting it and just talking rubbish.

I'd say SOB will start on the bench, the way Schmidt was talking if he's fit he'll definitely be involved.

I seen that too- in fairness Hook (and Tom to some degree) were the only offenders. I think Pope is a good panelist.

I thought he was going to hit George Hook. He was being a bafoon about it. Oh well, Hook is retiring soon, and ROG isn't.

I might be a big geek, but I could listen to the likes of RoG go on about returning to play for hours longer than any of the drivel others would go on about, I don't care about some guy who used to play before I was born or before TV cameras could capture what the players were actually like, I care about how SoB is going to be put on a program, get an idea of the program and the amount of time that will be involved in their return.

There is no way SOB will be fit for next week. Massive ice pack strapped to his hamstring? Be lucky if he is fit to face England. Poor decision rushing him back.

ROG is very good, I think... not saying everything he says is right, but it is interesting to hear his insights.

The stuff about the fear of relegation possibly having an impact upon the psychology of the French players was very interesting, particularly among the likes of the Castres players they have now who are involved in a relegation. I don't know if there is substance to it, but it is an interesting theory. I remember ROG seemed very frustrated at how some French teams seem to just give up away from home, and how their mindset going into away games is quite defeatist.

he had a shoulder injury. Hamstring injury can happen at any time. It is just lucky it happened when it did, not 2 minutes into the game. The medical care these guys get is top class, he wouldnt be involved in the 23 if they didnt think he was ready, I do think he needs pro12 gametime though

He has been rushed back ? He hasnt played in a year.
Is he more likely to tweak a hamstring warming up for Ireland than if he were turning out for 50 minutes for Leinster or a game for Carlow even ?
Or has an 'rush' to get him back mean he has put pressure on the rest of his body now that the shoulder is OK ?
