    Saturday 17/01/2015 5 miles @ 8:14

Trotted around the racecourse for this one :D
I didn't run the racecourse since the 5k last summer. I don't really like it as
I find it incredibly boring with Fcuk all to see and not many people about.
Today was even worse :D They had sheep on parts of the course sectioned off with barriers ffs.. 1 barrier was just like a small fence I could throw my legs over and there was 2-3 barriers that hat steps over them( I know there's a name for that but it escapes me now :D)..
The townie came out in me as I couldn't help but laugh at these strange creatures with multicolour hair dye on them. And of course I did the mandatory sheep impersonations Baaaaaa Baaaaaaa :D:D

Romancing sheep like that can get you lynched out where I'm from Marty :)

    Sunday 18/01/2015 15 miles @ 8:32

Spent about 30mins sitting on my arse wondering what route to take before finally just
going out the door and just running :D

Again, as I'm trying to get my LSRs back on track, I had no definite distance to do. Only objective was above HM distance.

Managed 15 miles but I must say I was tired after it, not falling on the ground in a heap tired, but suitably fatigued shall we say :D

I swung over by the new running track in westside for a gander and maybe do a couple of laps to initiate myself with the venue. Got over there but was disappointed to see it all fenced off :( The track, the playground, the whole park area was fenced off with a fence about 8 foot in height. I think the playground isn't fully finished so keeping everyone out until it is... Health and safety and all that :rolleyes:

The track itself looks good, 6 lanes and looks to my untrained eye to be 400 meter :D Pity they left it at 6 lanes as there was plenty of room for more :D Never took notice to see if there was floodlights but will look again..

I'll fire off an e-mail tomorrow to see what the story is regarding it being open..

    Monday 19/01/2015 5 miles @ 8:42

Down to the pitches for an easy 5 in the wind and the rain... Was lovely :)
Must get some alternative footwear for the pitches. Currently wearing an old pair
of adrenalines which were fit for the bin but grand on the pitches when its dry. Some areas are getting pretty mucky now so thinking between spikes or would trail runners do?? Or would I be better of just leaving the pitches when its that bad??

    Tuesday 20/01/2015 12 miles @ 7:57

Not a lot to say on this one, fairly mundane but glad to get it done.
Made some nice soup after, went down well and some left over for tomorrow.Nice :)

    Wednesday 21/01/2015 7 miles @ 8:23

Fairly standard run in and around town and back. Nothing to hectic.
Bit of pace in tomorrows run (in some shape of form :) ) , so saving a bit for that...

    Thursday 22/01/2015 8 miles @ 7:22 (Inc 40min(5.9mile) tempo)

Didn't know how this would go, actually anything different I do is like heading out into the unknown, which I suppose is a good thing as I wasn't really dreading it :D

Planned a general route for this which is fairly flat, no major elevation change during the tempo section..

Verdict.... Found it tough TBH.. Was tough getting going. After half mile I was into the pace and it wasn't to bad.
By half way I was finding it tough, occasionally dipping outside pace and needed the odd spurt to get back on track.
Breathing was fairly heavy throughout but wasn't a huge issue. Effort got tougher as I went on and last 5 mins was a slog to keep it going. I noticed I tend to grunt while I struggle with breathing :D:D

Happy to get it done, but when I do it again I hope I'm not filled with dread :)

    Friday 23/01/2015 7 miles @ 8:28

Relaxed run today to take the strain off the legs. Pace kept increasing and had to keep it in check as best I could. Lovely day for it today :)

    Saturday 24/01/2015 10 miles @ 8:00

A nice out and back run out to blackrock along the seafront.
Another nice evening, another evening I'm overdressed with hat, gloves and light jacket :D

Average pace was 7:58 so I slowed right down at the end to get it to an even 8:00 :D Even had to jog on an extra bit :eek:

Sometimes I wonder about what goes on in my head :D:D:pac:

    Sunday 25/01/2015 20 miles @ 8:47

Nothing to exciting really, 1st 20 miler in a while so was prepared to call it a day
at 18 if it got to bad.

Didn't go to bad, headed off in a general direction and ended up around cappagh park. Few laps around the GAA pitches before heading over to soccer pitch :)
Game on there so did a few laps while watching the game. Finished 6-2 so you can imagine the standard :D Was willing a high ball to come over so I could "kill it" with one of my deft touches from years ago but no joy :D Has a 2 min chat with the ref after(who I know) and headed off again....

Didn't go to bad all in all, slight bit of pain in right glute area towards the end but grand again...

    Rest day tomorrow...

    Monday 26/01/2015 Rest

    Tuesday 27/01/2015 10 miles @ 8:29

    Wednesday 28/01/2015 10 miles @ 8:01 (Progression)

Decided on a progression run today. Bit of wind about but it was in every direction.
As soon as I thought I'd have a favourable wind direction for a mile split, the wind would change. And when I thought I'd be facing a headwind for a mile it would change direction again :D Not to much of a help, and not to much of a hinderance, just annoying :D

    9:17, 8:31, 8:03, 7:38, 7:16, 7:07, 6:23, 9:08, 8:41, 8:01

Enjoyed this. Gradual build up and didn't feel to bad. the 7:07 mile was where
I started to feel it a bit. Towards the end of that mile I was finding it tough.
The jump to 6:23 was to be my final fast mile hence the bigger jump down to it.
It started hard but manageable but progressively got tougher. Down to the last 0.2 mile of that rep and I was suffering :D Badly :D The legs just wanted to stop and had to fight to keep them going to see it out.. Hands on the knees to catch my breath for couple of minutes after, and then did 3 handy mile to get me home.

    Happy to get it done....

    Thursday 29/01/2015 4 miles @ 9:08

4 easy/recovery miles down at the pitches with head torch.
Bit of wind and cold rain but it was nice and refreshing.

Was in good form starting out but after seeing a couple of dogs being walked
my thoughts turned to that poor staffie who was "hogtied and cooked alive over a fire at The Curragh"... What kind of cruel sick bastards are we living with....
the journal.. but still... (It's not to graphic, ok to view)

I hate animal cruelty of any kind and stuff like this makes me so friggin angry...

    Friday 30/01/2015 10 miles @ 8:32

Was a bit of a chore for the first 4 miles but was grand then.
Glad I stuck it out to the end as I was close to going home at 4 miles.

A nice sleep in tomorrow... Nice :)

    Saturday 31/01/2015 12 miles @ 8:00

Cold, cold run, even a little flurry of snow which was nice to see :)
Ran out past salthill and onto the barna road junction before turning around for the return leg.

Home and settles into a nice bowl of spicy tomato soup and homemade brown bread..:) Followed by tea and biccies :(:D

Cold is right. It was so cold I could nt keep going round the shops in Galway I had to retreat to the pub at 4.30! I figured it was better for my knee as well!

I'd say it didn't take much for you to reach that decision :D 4:30 to closing time?? :D

Another coastal run out by Furbo as far as Padraicin's.
Left it till 2pm to do this and there was still ice on some of the footpaths

Gonna treat myself to a glass of plonk now to toast the boards racers today :)

What distances do you hope to bring the back to back long runs up to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,140 ✭✭✭martyboy48

Up around the 20-20 / 20-2x mark if I'm able for it, will play it by ear and see how the body responds. Nothing set in stone yet so will see how the next few weeks go :)

Hadn't thought of going that route, is there any particular benefit of doing the longer run first?

My main thoughts were of doing the longer run on somewhat tired legs and maybe upping the longer run up from 20 miles while reducing previous days running accordingly.. Sure ya know yourself what I'm like.... I'm winging it  :D

Not sure of the differing benefits between doing it that way as I know as much as you about these things;) I only ask as a few first timers round these parts in the past did a 30 miler or Donadea 50k. Maybe TbL would chip in with his thoughts??

    Monday 02/02/2015 4 miles @ 9:31

4 mile recovery around the pitches. It was needed as I was a bit tight around the hip/groin area but all good again :) Not a sinner did I see....

Never underestimate the power of a recovery run :)

Less chance of injury,,,,and u more than Liklly will have coverd ur race distance at near Enuf to race pace, over the two days which will give u a good confidence booster (im assuming ur doin Conn ultra),,wud usually train at race pace for an ultra durin a long run as opposed to under for marathon training...

Thanks so much UM, some good info there that I will use from now on. Ya it's Conn, would never of though of long run at race pace, will have to try and put some thought into a goal time. Thanks again :)
