1 down 3 to go :) Great match by the sounds of it. Dublin 24 Kildare 19. KevinMc MOTM.

Are you saying Dublin were a point down with 3 minutes left and won by 5?

Congrats to our dublin brethren a hard fought contest and I think the lillies showed great fight. Onwards and upwards but great to see both teams fighting it out like that

Sorry I had to miss this one, the Meath game had great bite in it too. The competition for places seems to help make these "no contest" games a little more interesting.

I though Carthy was very good against Meath, although playing at No 12 he was our best midfielder, if you get where I'm coming from. Meath getting more dominant and him being subbed were around the same time, he has a good understanding with Lorcan Molloy too.

I see he came on at half time and leveled the game at one stage. It would be great to come out of this and the league with a new established midfielder. I don't know why we'd play Bastic in these games, I'd say you know what you are going to get from hem anyway, one decent half, certainly you wouldn't want another injury to him again at this stage of the season and whatever he has left in the tank could be useful later this year.

Not a bad game to finish off the getting to know you part of the season. We played very well in patches, then a lot like the Meath game found ourselves under a bit of pressure when Kildare pushed up on us - in fairness I thought Curries kicking was quite good. There does seem to be evidence of a toned down version of the gung ho attitude from last year. Kildare started with a sweeper which we didn't counter, leaving Small as the free man at the back. I've grown to like the lad considering he wasn't a nailed on starter for Ballymun the last year or 2, he has brought a fair level of maturity to the IC game. He read the game very well and had a few important interceptions, small and rugged he's a proper old style stopper. I'd like to see him tested against the Div 1 teams in the league, could well be the makings of him. Jack Mc saw a lot of the early ball with the extra man from kickouts ... I'm not convinced he's a reliable defender and was hoping his role in the HF line last time out was the start of some new thinking by the management - Jim if yer reading this ;) Mick Fitz has a lot to do in the next few months to justify selection in the championship.

Shane Carthy is bringing a fair bit of influence onto the pitch when he plays, I hope he keeps himself in good health - he's a mobile player and adds value to the team in either a midfield/HF position. Tomás Brady had a rather indifferent game today, couldn't fault his attitiude or application but gave the ball away once to often for me not to swear at him :D, scored a lovely point towards the end so he redeemed himself somewhat. I didn't see anything exceptional from the forwards that would standout as game changers as once again we struggled to find the back of the net, Rocks frees, O'Garas presence, Kev Mc's endeavour were all there but we sorely needed the playmaker (Alan Brogan, DC, Kilkenny Flynn) to stitch the parts together, but that's just the way of things last week of January.

MDM - what can ya say - early part of the year he's not even in 2nd gear and he's probably frustrated knowing what he can give, and in fairness he was well up for the game when introduced - but look no excuses tho he lashed out, luckily in the dying seconds when the play was up the other end. He reminded me of my own playing days when we played a team of travellers, I think they were called Avila Gaels (those that remember Major Joyce and him with the ciggie down his socks) in Vincents school in Glasnevin. The lad I was marking just kept turning to me saying "c'mon I'll fight ya".

I don't think there was any real expectation that we'd win the OBC this year, so the extra games were an added bonus and the individual performances of Culligan, Small, Carthy, Brady & O'Conghaile over the 5 games were encouraging. Ta

Have grown very fond of John Small myself, he has had 4 really good games so far couldn't fault him in any and should come on leaps and bounds this year training with the senior panel and learning off the likes Ger Brennan and the rest

On a side note its seriously pissing me off the scheduling of the football and hurling games at the same time on the same day !! Would it really kill them to schedule the hurling on the Sat and Football on Sun or vice versa I mean its really not a hard thing to do

With the greatest respect to the travelling community .. would you pick a fight with one on their home pitch with another 14 on the field and 20 or so watching from the line ....... Under 8's shouldn't be fighting anyways :pac::pac::pac:

    All set Cork this weekend
Looking forward to it myself. The panel seems more tied down this year. Many of the lads that got a run out in the O'Byrne cup last year didn't this year. I don't think we'll see the near 50 lads getting a run in the league this year I'd say it will be closer to thirty.

Just a few rambling thoughts on what I've seen and what I'm likely to see in the coming months.

Ok Navan and Newbridge were hardly as epic an adventure as Homer's Odyssey but I was pleasantly surprised with the big Dublin support that turned out both days. It reinforces the fact that given the occasion and opportunity the Dublin fans will support it. My jaysis I forgot how small the Conleths pitch was, it can't be much bigger than a subbuteo table ;)

The NFL predictions thread has so far shown emphatically that Dublin are expected to retain the title. I'd also be of the general view that they'll do so, in fact the biggest hurdle for Dublin in the league to my mind will be to make the top 4 and this will be far from a foregone conclusion. The unpredictability of early season games is the downfall of looking at the likely outcome. Last year we got out of jail a man and 6(?) points down to Mayo, a man down and the last kick of the game win against Tyrone (thanks DC). They were the turning points that got us into the semis, the capitulation of Cork in the semi and dismantling of Derry in the final, and it's worth remembering that both led the Dubs a merry dance in the earlier stages of the league, so yeah get us to April and we'll take it from there.

28th August 1983..... wow thats a long time ago .. the last time we beat Cork in Cork. On the back of 2 contrasting early season campaigns, Walsh,Cadogan & Cahalane jumping ship, rumblings of disquiet in the camp and Cork football possibly at its lowest ebb for a very long time, the young talent of Dan MacEoin might be the only bright spot taking to the pitch this weekend for Cork. Cork need to win this game far more than we do, and for that reason I think they will.

I agree that Cork need to win more than we do, especially to quiet the rumblings about Cuthert. But based on our pre season form, Corks lack of it & the fact that more and more of our big guns are returning with each passing game, I think that we can and will give it a right auld rattle. (According to Boards Rule 45, subsection 73(b) I can't come out and actually say that we will win, or I'll be accused of arrogance. ;) )

Of our regulars, Cooper, McMahon, Darren Daly, RO'C, MDMA, Jack Flash, Kev Mc, O'Gara, Costello, Rock, Nicky D & Bastic all had significant game time in the O'Byrne Cup. Throw in a couple more coming back for the Cork game (Bernard and Cluxton would be nice) and that's a pretty strong team for this early in the year.

Was chatting to a lad who was telling me that OP/ER were down in Meath last weekend playing a challenge/opening a pitch - Alan, Bernard and Paul were out for a runaround, which (whatever about Bernard) maybe encouraging from a Dublin perspective to see Alan warming his engine in late January - I sincerely hope he gives it 1 more year

I remember seeing those lads playing junior up in Olafs ,wearing Biffo coloured jersies and scaring ths young lads on the Olafs team

I'd say that all three of them were a sight to behold alright, back when they were young bunks, without a care in the world. Bernard Sr, Alan and Bernard Jr have all said that Paul is the best natural athlete of the lot of them, which is a scary thought.

Yeah it's a pity really that the cruciates and leg break robbed Paul of the opportunity to establish himself in the set up. Plenty of players have recovered from a leg break and continued in the same vein, cruciates tend to take 5-10% off a player - even it's it's only in their head. I remember his last injury when ROC was off in France presenting Seanie Murray with a starting place in the league and that didn't go too well  - in fairness to Murray he was converted to FB. I see Paul has been playing up front with DIT lately - there mustn't be a Brogan that likes defending :D .. well da cuz James maybe - actually he was probably out in Meath last weekend too now that I think of it

When ye are naming football team please???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

No idea. During the O'Byrne Cup, it wasn't named until the day before the game. Dunno if they will continue to name it that late during the league. I hope not.

    DUBLIN (SF v Cork)

    1 Seán Currie (Ballymun Kickhams)

    2 Eoin Culligan (Kilmacud Crokes)

    3 Rory O'Carroll (Kilmacud Crokes)

    4 Darren Daly (Fingal Ravens)

    5 Jonny Cooper (Na Fianna)

    6 John Small (Ballymun Kickhams)

    7 Jack McCaffrey (Clontarf)

8 Denis Bastick (Templeogue Synge St)

    9 Shane Carthy (Nh Mearnóg)

    10 Tomás Brady (Na Fianna)

    11 Dean Rock (Ballymun Kickhams)

12 Emmett O Conghaile (Lucan Sarsfields)

    13 Kevin McManamon (St Jude's)

14 Eoghan O'Gara (Templeogue Synge St)

    15 Cormac Costello (Whitehall Colmcille)

Considering the availability of players, this is as strong a line up as could be expected. Darren Daly in for Mick Fitz is a big plus imo - I'm delighted to see Carthy in mid too .. there's just a chance this lad may field there in championship .. which could allow Cian O'S return to the backs

Nothing as yet TTM, the team named for Sunday is near enough the same team as took the field against Meath (Molloy GK change & Devereaux injury) the 2 exceptions. I'd say the replacements will follow from previous games as there's nothing really to surprise you with other than possibly Bernard being given a run.

I'd say the bench will be Molloy, Michael Dara Mcauley, Mick Fitzsimons, Hannigan, Philly Ryan, Niall Scully & Paddy O'Higgins as a possible cover midfielder, and a few others that will struggle for game time

Whats the story with Kevin Nolan these days? Is he still involved in the squad or is out of things altogether?

Emmett O Conghaile thought he was doing a fine job at centre mid

I may be wring but I think first sign new tweaking Dublin system from all out attack ti slightly more defensive style

He'll drop to midfield while Carthy probably play a sweeper in holding centre around centre back when likes wing backs copper bomb forward etc so Dublin imo playing just five forwards

If so great sign for Dublin as Gavin has learned from he's mistake and be honest was always on the cards as he admitted after donegal he was to blame and manager does that it means imo he has no ego and is humble so imo that means he can and will get better and better and evolve he's team

Not strongest but still strong bench

    Thank for that

My thoughts exactly on Carthy - I'm thinking that Cork will withdraw Hodnett to the HF line playing Hurley & O'Neill inside. Carthy will offer Small defensive support through the middle or it maybe Tomás Brady who has been excellent around the breaking ball so far this season.

The big concern for me would be our lack of a proper centre forward to drive at Cork, it maybe the case that Carthy or O'Conghaile who are both very good carriers will take the role but my own feeling would be that Costello will withdraw to the HF line
