Met Eireann have issued an orange warning for gusts to 130 km/h on northwest coasts with snow accumulations on high ground.

The higher-res models they are looking at must show it adding an extra punch.

Thursday/Friday still has the potential to deliver a period of strong winds and heavy rain as a second depression deepens as it crosses close to or over NI. Still uncertainty with that.

Wonder when the warning will go red as it usually does

It won't go red unless theres a sudden large shift south of the storm.
It only just about warrants an Orange warning IMO , must of been the swell and the wintry aspect of it that moved it up to that level.

It'll be interesting to see what it looks like on visible satellite shortly , sure is packing a punch atm.

No chance with this one. Track is too far north and it will have already matured, there's no room for upgrades. Scotland will be getting stronger winds from this and the UKMO still has a yellow warning for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Waves will be huge off the west and northwest coast. UKMO shipping forecast for Rockall and Malin putting the sea state at "phenomenal".

Sat scan from during the night shows the scale of the low.

I would have thought winds gusting to 130k would warrant a red warning, I am nearly certain we had red for 130k before from ME

Gusts over 130k is a red warning

Maybe if it was centred over more populated parts of the country but 130kph is a standard stormy day on the NW

As Ian said I think it's the combination of the huge seas and snow on high ground along with the winds that triggered the orange warning since most people don't think much of a yellow warning when they hear it. I don't see any model that shows potential for red warning winds. I'll be surprised if we see gusts over 120 kmh to be honest, but we'll see.

Met Office UK have just upgraded from a Yellow warning to an Amber warning.

Yep. Warning of "exceptionally large waves" for the west coast of Scotland.

The Met Eireann warning also includes the risk of coastal flooding now too.

I just caught the end of the Sky News weather report and they showed a graph with a big black kind of blob on it (sorry for my terrible terminology) is that a warning of snow or just bad wind/rain?

Just driven home; Killarney to Moll's Gap and the weather is awesome. Great visible swathes of water sweeping across the skies and the car hard to handle... All the "rivers" are flowing strong down the mountain by Barfinnihy Lake. Glad to be in from it and home until Sunday now; may decide to pump up the new air bed downstairs as the dangerous trees are still here  Wild and noisy here now

Some sort of minor squall feature just passed through here in the last 5 mins. Peak rate 26.3 mm. Only lasted a minute or two. Short & Sweet.

Typical Sky News ramping, to an untrained eye you'd think we were heading for the apocalypse based on that chart.

Looks like the strongest winds will be around noon tomorrow, just about touching storm force on the Donegal coast on the 12Z HIRLAM.

    Bkr5LYX.png

First time I can remember an Orange warning for a storm that has its centre up near Iceland. :pac: Testament to the size of the windfield I suppose.

Windy here on the North Kerry coast but nothing too bad yet, 10 min avg wind speed 29 kph NW ( gust 55 kph ) cooling dow now from a high of 12.2C to 7.7C atm.

Mace Head and Malin Head with gusts of 48 knts in the last hour but surprisingly Dublin Airport with a gust of 49 Knts.

M4 Buoy: Off the Donegal coast Approximately 45 nautical miles (83 km) west northwest of Rossan Point / Wave Height 7.1m
M6 Buoy: Deep Atlantic Approximately 210 nautical miles (389 km) west southwest of Slyne Head / Wave Height 7.9m

My Webcam pointing out into Donegal Bay. With a 4.00m tide at 7:13am tomorrow morning there is a probability of overtopping. It will be dark but car park lights should increase visibility if rain holds off.

I'm reading 68kmph here. Right in the coast, South Donegal.

Yes stormy here in Donegal all evening, and this isn't even the storm :D

What I find quite interesting at the moment is the pressure reading - 1010mb in the middle of the country which seems to be quite high given the force of winds countrywide. It just falls in under the definition of a LP system if I'm right (1013mb is mean sea level pressure). Or is this unusual?

Max gust of 58km/h from earlier and currently gusting to 20km/h so nothing of real interest here yet. I think we are too far away from this Low to give anything severe. We will wait and see what happens.

Emirates aircraft talking to Shannon ATC reporting wind speed of 170 knots, Shannon passing info to other aircraft and one guy needs to change his flight level due strong wind or he will be short of fuel reaching his destination,

2012 up date from Met Eireann

Cold and blustery overnight, with some severe gusts in western and northwestern coastal counties. Widespread showers also, these will be heavy at times, with some hail and thunder. Some sleet or snow showers will affect some hilly areas of north Connacht and Ulster also. Lowest temperature 1 to 4 C., with some frost in sheltered areas also.

    1730 Gale warning update
Westerly gales or strong gales overnight and on Wednesday, on all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea. Winds will occasionally reach storm force 10, from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,991 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Making me jealous sitting here in a completely uneventful London :(

Severe gusts, thunder, hail, sleet and snow, far more exiting that the easterlies everyone seems to be obsessed with!

Just look at the tailwind this emirates flight approaching the west has.....

Nice and blustery here this evening in West Limerick. Some showers too. Its not too cold either as I was just outside in short sleeves.

Probably just a little too far South to get a real taste of the winds but at least its more interesting than its been for a good while :)

Looking forward to lurking on this thread and reading about conditions experienced by fellow Boardsies :)

hail showers and strong gusts, lights flickering here already. (Mayo)

I note that the Met Eireann weather warnings are saying that from midnight onwards the winds will pick up.

They are ramping up pretty quickly now here now. Its nice to listen to the winds with a mug of coffee in one hand, bar of chocolate sitting beside me and my trusty smart phone keeping me up to date.

    Happy days :):):)

Met Eireann have added Clare to the orange warning, don't think it was in the earlier warning.

    showforecast.cgi?lightningmap=yes&fcstfile=2014121106_201412092111_1_stormforecast.xml

    Valid: Wed 10 Dec 2014 06:00 to Thu 11 Dec 2014 06:00 UTC
    Issued: Tue 09 Dec 2014 21:11

A level 1 was issued for N Ireland and W Scotland mainly for severe wind gusts.

    SYNOPSIS and DISCUSSION

Satellite loops reveal a deep cyclonic vortex centered just south of Iceland as of Tuesday 20 UTC. Center of the low will shift towards the Norwegian Sea with steep pressure gradient to the south inducing very strong low-level flow. 850 hPa winds will reach 25 - 40 m/s and the strongest windgusts will impact especially western Scotland, locally exceeding 33 m/s. Steep lapse rates of the polar airmass will likely contribute to the marginal destabilisation with CAPE values 100 - 200 J/kg possible. Lack of concentrated mid to upper tropospheric forcing now precludes a scenario with strongly forced QLCS. However convection and associated downdrafts may enhance the wind gusts during the passage of showers or weakly electrified thunderstorms. Thus, a Lvl 1 is introduced.

Another region with DMC will be the southern Mediterranean, especially just off the Tunisia coastline, towards southern Greece. Marginally unstable airmass will be located south of the warm front. Lack of steep lapse rates and strong vertical wind shear will preclude any significant severe weather risk.
