Interesting discussion starting with Lemlins post.

I agree with Iroced that the influence of FFS and FFFix is probably being overstated. There is nothing groundbreaking there, despite FFFix in particular dressing it up as some big secret formula. Their transfer recommendations are basically the player in the position you are switching who has scored best over the past few weeks. Sure that's what we'd probably call the definition of casual play. FFFix wouldn't have told you to bring in RVP for Costa for example :), that took a special genius all of my own.

My being that other than the FFS members articles and stats these sites pretty much state the obvious. They might help a terrible player with no clue about football achieve a regular top 100k finish and be competitive in their work league, but they won't turn an average joe into a top player regularly in the top 5 or 10k.

I think interest in FPL is increasing with increasing overall numbers and therefore increasing numbers of more serious players who do a bit of research. But there are still loads of 'casual' players in all my leagues who don't know how their wildcard works, that midweek gameweeks exist, anything about price changes.

Regarding watching games I'd agree obviously that this is the best way to get a feel for players and team form, but many of us, the oul lads with small kids in particular, it's just not possible to watch a load of live games on a Sat/ Sun. I think having a good love of and understanding of football combined with watching MOTD and a bit of targeted research (match reports, FPL sites, FSA, stats) is a perfectly valid approach. It is certainly mine.

Basically we now have to consider the top 50k finish the new top 10k finish!

I'm guessing he'll be watching the Arsenal v Southampton game from behind the sofa!

Interesting to see someone with so much spent on defence so high up the overall rankings.

State of that team!!! Shocked that he has more points than me, a whopping 43 in fact. I'm top of work league that all that matters to me :)

but wow, I'm mustn't be that good

Shame about his bench order, although he stands a decent chance of Fernando not playing to get Downing off it.

And who wasn't paying attention to the midweek deadline!

Captains & auto subs I would happily do away with both! So annoying when you make your plans and your rival hasn't logged in for a couple of weeks and then they have Costa captain with X as vc Boyd comes off the bench for them and X some how ends up with a brace despite not scoring in a season and a half!

Last season, the guy that usually wins my mini league had a James Collins' 15 pointer off the bench and Ross Barkley 18 pts or so during a DGW (among others). My switch to hardcore when I found this forum has paid off and I'm over 200 pts ahead of him this season :D.

Also, as others have said, since I've started playing this game the one thing I've always seen as a flaw is the excessive importance of the captain.

We've had plenty of arguments about the part luck does or doesn't play in FPL success, but as regards captain its often blind luck. You can spend agss figuring out a well balanced team and pick the statistically or logically best captain, but they get a red card and some looper who captained Mo Diame leaves you for dead.

Perhaps an option to change captain as in UFPL might help add more skill to it and remove the overly harsh punishment of a captain fail. Or maybe that's just cause of the week I'm having.

UFPL definitely favours the hardcore player you really need to put in the hours and dedicate the time to make the mid GW changes. It really helped playing the beta last season as a good FPL player is not necessarily a good UFPL player and vice versa the playmakers are consistently picking up extra points that players like Modric used to always lack.

Got done years ago by a Huckerby hattrick off the bench... still sickens me to this day. I think you got a hattrick bonus back then too, not 100%.

He had another Norwich player that came on...it added up to almost 40 points and knocked me off our mates league poll position.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrr  :)

Chadli being benched would be ridiculous given his goalscoring form, but perfectly understandable nonetheless.

it wouldn't make it any less annoying though.

I would love to see them do away with captains. It would change the game more than people realise as they probably wouldn't adjust the player prices accordingly.

I'd prefer to see it back to when we only had a captain, no v-captain, so if you're captain didn't play, tough, none of this safety net that is the v-captain.

Jeez that must be going back 10 years. Was that for FPL or another fantasy version?

I'm getting worried about Mirallas now. Was a risk and I'll take my medicine if it doesn't pay off but I'm scared now

I don't see a strong argument in doing away with the captains aswell, whatever way you wanna look at it, it does involve another element of skill. Chances are that over 38 weeks I make better choices than player b I'll come out with a better captain points tally.

People need to focus less on THAT week when your opponent got this player off the bench and focus more on the fact that of they have the wrong players in their 11 over the course of the season they'll be punished by your good decisions, if you're making good decisions.

I didn't specify in my post, but I was referring with the doing away with the auto-sub argument too.

We lavish ourselves with praise for having a strong squad when we need to call upon them for the autosub. When it happens the guy we don't rate, we turn to outrage that the game is favouring the weaker player.

It isn't. Every element in the game where a decision has to be made, benefits the player who puts the research into it and time into it because they more often than not make better decisions.

Exactly. If you captain Aguero every week and your mate captains Mo Diame, lets see who wins over a season!

Mad captaincy pics rarely work (RVP last night!!) and I do think some players over think it. If a player is being captained by 90% of people, a la Suarez last season, just captain him and try beat your rival with your other 10 players, rather than be 'different' and miss the big hauls.

i'd be more inclined to scrap bonus points. or maybe limit it to max 1 extra point. double captaincy points already can make a such big difference, adding in the baps just skews things a bit too much i.m.o.
