Well guys, the other half has called me to say that services have managed to burst a water main in our street.

This means we've running water but it's not suitable for drinking.

She's broken out my purification tablets and pack of condoms (I can tell you that took some explaining when she found them last year...).

So today the name of the game is water purification.

At the moment she's straining the dirty water through an old cotton T-shirt of mine and then putting one of the purification tablets in the condom.

Those of you who are familiar with my published works will know we did something similar earlier this month when we visited her sister and "went dark" for the weekend, eschewing the joys of electricity and running water to practise our survival skills.

Will let you know how the chlorinated water tastes!

Further to my last post, it seems my girlfriend discovered I had one of those fold up water containers in the wardrobe, so we filled that up (5 gallons and put a couple of purification tablets in).

She actually used one of my good T-shirts by way of a filter (typical!). To be on the safe side though we've only used the water for washing and brushing our teeth, drinking milk for the time being.

Sadly our lovely goldfish Bullet and Supreme Commander Kim Jong Un are going to have to wait this out as we can't take the risk of the chlorine in the cleaned water harming them.

Herself is going out to get some bottled water later today but this underlines the importance of keeping a sixpack of Mineral water (or at the least bottles of tap water) under your bed, lesson learned!

For hygiene, drinking and cooking, 5L per person, per day is the recommended minimum stored water.

Thanks chief, herself is going to get enough for all of us in the apartment (three people!)

She also has filled up the bath and chucked some tablets in, we'll use that water for cleaning/shaving tomorrow. Can transfer it to the basin little by little.

I am insufferable at the moment as she said all my Survivalist stuff was taking up good space in the bedroom! :-D

The quest for the "perfect" BOB goes on and today thanks to Aldi having reading glasses for €1.99 I have added a pair.

While thinking of Aldi it reminds me that they had the H2GO bags in in the summer (€4.99?) and they are handy for Recondite49's type of situation for storing clean water in the bath. The bags need to be inside something and you can easily fit 2 in a bath and they keep the water better than just having it in an open bath, would probably be OK in a shower tray.

    My3Cents,

Thank you so much, this idea is genius and yes I do have a friend with a wheelbarrow - certainly handier than the condoms, and also a lot easier to explain away to the missus...! :-D

Its just a heavy gauge sealed plastic bag with a filler hole and bung its shaped to fit in a wheel barrow but you don't have to have a wheel barrow to use it. Filled when you still have good tap water it can be left in the bath. Try and wait till they have them in Aldi (fairly sure they were only €4.99) next year, cheapest I can find them including delivery is about €13 (Amazon.co.uk) and that really is too much for what they are.

Space is our problem and those bags take up very little space when not in use. I bought 3, one I use in the garden like in the advertising pics and the other 2 are for storing water in an emergency.

Some useful pics of the bags here at the bottom of the page.

Been trying to get my hands on a supply of pain killers for ages, finally got a pack of 500 ibuprofen with a good expiration date. Best part, they were free!

    We buy bulk here
Prices in euro, option to purchase certain meds in bulk, multiple options for delivery, no hidden charges like vat or handling charges.
Much better value than Chemist Direct

Needed to replace the flat roof over my kitchen, so replaced it and extended it out 8 foot over the back door. Giving us an 8 x 12 foot dry area to store logs, coal, the bbq. ....... Thought I'd fibreglass the roof instead of torch on felt. I've done a canoe and repaired my boat so how hard could it be? Also decided to put in roof lights. 4 f***ing roof lights. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Finished the timber work Sunday, started the fibreglass on monday. FINISHED the fibreglass this evening!!!!
I've learned it before and I'll learn it again but **** is way easier to do on YouTube then in real life. Sand and topcoat tomorrow and she's done.

Here ya go. First one is the overhang from the gardens. The rest are the roof. Props will be replaced with timber post and rails when I'm doing the deck.

The fiberglass is just a great job. I thought about doing our flat roof with it but decided it was above my skill level.

Ah yeah, there's no bother walking on it. You can get the top coat non slip and all. I didn't as I only put a light fall in the roof.

Learned how to tie a lanyard knot (aks friendship or diamond knot)
How I can make simple directions so complicated I have no idea, thankfull I eventually found a you tube vid where the use a piece of paper to simplify it, then it clicked and in my head. Useful knot that looks well, by the end of today every piece or cord I have in use as a lanyard will have one :-)
