I think Nidge intended a smooth ride after taking over as leader. He, Fran, Darren and Tommy the best of friends and raking in the cash. But instead, Nidge is plunged into a war with the IRA followed up by a war with the travellers and now Fran has become an enemy. John Boy likewise tried to control things but first was reigning in Hughie and then got into a war with Fran and his paranoia ultimately got him killed. Ironic we see Nidge in late series 3 and also series 4 and 5 in the exact same place.

But gangs are hard to control. Yes, Nidge's (and John Boy's before that) positions are fragile and everyone wants to be top dog. BUT Nidge has so far anticipated all threats and was able to use important allies like Tony to his advantage. Tonight, he was ironically saved by the cops! Darren, Fran, Tommy and others all went against him with events like pipebombing the IRA's car, sleeping with an IRA man's wife and killing the dentist. But Nidge's gang are loyal not to Nidge but to themselves and Nidge knows this. Darren, Fran and Tommy were all loyal and genuine friends at one point to Nidge but Nidge alienated them all and for the first time, the biggest threats to him come from within his own circle rather than externally (yes, the IRA in the past and now the travellers are huge threats but Fran and Siobhan are in positions to do a lot more damage).

cant believe he didnt kill Fran in ep1...

If Fran had the eflow Nidge would be already dead.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know as to why they didnt put eflow on the port tunnel? Would the ERU have got to Nidge I wonder?

It might be ten years, but he could easily be walking the streets again waiting for his day in court.

That was my initial thought, but it somehow seems less likely after he attacked Nidge during his visit. That's hardly going to appeal to the judge's sympathy when he's deciding on bail :D

The police scenes seem so forced and in my opinion , poorly cast.

It seems as they've tried to go down the route of the wire, without any chance of getting the depth of charachter required.

That said, I'm really enjoying this season.

I think the show focuses more on storylines then character development and the funding they receive relative to the Wire influences this perhaps. The pace of the show is relatively frantic by comparison. Your not on tenterhooks as much with the Wire but your still heavily engrossed and more invested in the characters. The cops are probably a bit too peripheral in Love/Hate

Someone referred to the scene in the Wire where d'Angelo, etc are playing chess earlier, well, Love/hate doesnt go too deep into these scenes as they probably dont have the time or money to do this. Instead they focus on pace and palpability, ala 24. The Wire though gave a whole five mins on that aforementioned scene alone whereas Aido barely had time to give his story (or euphamism) about the monkeys and chimps

Siobhan is gorgeous but she was a bit of a whore even going back to season one. She was texting Tommy in Eddie Rockets when he was sitting beside Mary.

I thought that was another strong episode after last week's opener. I'm already liking this season a whole lot more than season 4.

Just one thing; What are they going to end up doing with Tommy? Surely in his current condition, there isn't a chance of us seeing him up and about and Tommying around before the end of the season.

SO, I've been thinking that he will be used to forward another part of the plot. In my theory, I see Paulie falling hard for Siobhan beyond just "riding a young one" and will want a bit more of a regular thing. Siobhan however is just looking for a rare bit of fun in her life and is still committed to working on things with Tommy. This isn't what Paulie wants to hear and him being a man who is used to getting his own way goes about making Siobhan a single lady - by turning off Tommy's life support in the hospital.

Probably won't go down like this I know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did either.

I think Nidge himself has to suffer a personal loss this season maybe Warren or Trish will die

And for Fran it could be a way to make Nidge feel the loss he has experienced with Linda's death. Would keep the 2 of them alive to the end of the series anyway.

I think Nidge felt he had the whole thing under control. He would use Paulie to kill Paddy and that would be that. He also totally underestimated Paddy and he also perhaps overestimated his and Paulie's abilities to control things.

Nidge remember will kill when necessary. But only when necessary. In season four, he regarded Dano and Wayne as threats clearly. He views Paddy and Lizzie the same in season 5. But he regarded Fran as a friend he could control and not a threat as of start of season 5.

Looking back, Nidge had the following killed (directly, indirectly or contributed) in the series. And the reason?

John Boy. While it was Darren and it was personal for him, it was Nidge who egged him on to do it imo. Nidge wanted John Boy gone for numerous reasons: he did not like JBs paranoid and erratic actions. He also wanted to be top dog.

Luke: Nidge does not like anyone he does not trust knowing his plans. Luke was a nuisance to Darren's sister and Nidge personally killed Luke (the only person he clips personally thus far?) and killed two birds with the one stone. Main reason being Luke knew about the John Boy hit.

Tommy??: Maybe he will, may he won't die. But could Tommy be the second direct victim of Nidge's actions? Nidge lashed out on Tommy due to be stressed over the IRA incidents but clearly did not mean to kill him intentionally.

Darren: Nidge meets Tony and does a deal. Part of the deal is to kill Darren. Nidge arranges Elmo and Ado to do it but fails. It is Lizzie who finishes him off and Nidge or Tony as it turned out had nothing got to do with this.

Dano: Clearly, Nidge wanted Dano out of the way. His main aim was to kill Nidge to avenge his father. Clearly, so did Tony. Tony's deal with Nidge ensured Dano out of the way.

Wayne: Nidge probably considered Wayne unloyal and someone who would change sides too quickly for money. Not Nidge's ideal hitman.

Lizzie: Dano's friend and killed for the same season as Dano. Lizzie was about to go after Nidge presumably as she got ready to go out with a balaclava and gun before she died. She lost her brother and her friend Dano through Nidge.

Who could be Nidge's next victims? Paddy, Tommy, Siobhan, Fran, Terence and Paulie are all potentials. It depends on where the story goes and how much of a threat these pose to Nidge.

I have this feeling too. All through season 4 and now into season 5, we see Nidge with Warren a lot and Trish was feeling a bit depressed. When the chips are down, Nidge (like Fran) cares deeply for his family and I predict someone other than Fran will hit Nidge's family with Fran perhaps relishing first in it and then coming full circle and feeling sorry for Nidge and both alive at end of season!

Judging by this discussion I must be the only one who likes the Police angle. I think it adds to the show and I like it. Even like the performances. Like the new Chief Super too - Bacon and Cabbage :D. The scene with him asking for a report before he could allocate better resources rang very true to me. Don't think there is a chance in hell that Moynihan will have an affair with the dentists wife. I have the feeling that Carolan wants to show him as a normal family man doing a job. A nice change from the cliche of the cop with the drink problem/broken marriage.

Comparing it to the Wire is more than a little bit unfair. The Wire is the best TV drama ever. Worth pointing out too that it had 12 episodes per series, so had more time to develop characters.

Ok, Ill break it down for you.

    1. Hughie isn't a threat is a puzzling remark
    2. The "Spanish boss" (who is Irish of course) son Paulie is another strange one

Those are the two main pieces of confusion that I spotted, you would also assume that if Fran stays in prison he will be dead so there will be no release hanging over him....that one not a big deal.

Does that help clear up what I meant?

Edit: **** me, what shipment are you on about? He owes Paulie for a hit, he is getting a loan from Paulies uncle.

He is not splitting any proceeds from the shipment with him anyway so killing him for that reason is a non runner also.

Calm. the ****. down. I couldn't remember the name of the Irish boss based in Spain. I don't think Hughie has it in him. I thought Nidge was starting to import drugs again and that he would be supposedly using the money from those proceeds to repay the loan. IMHO :pac:

I must be the only one that doesn't find the love/hate girls attractive, they're above average with regard to looks, but hardly gorgeous. I did like darren's sister when she was in it, each to their own I suppose.

There is nobody called Hughie in the show though. There was, and he was 'clipped' in the early seasons.

CiC, probably short for commander in charge or chief in command.
