It's cheaper and easier to play cr@ppy music in shops but have you noticed how most posters here remember where the cr@ppiest music is and remember some details of the cr@appy music? The "annoyance" factor, e.g. Haaavee Nawmin; those fecquing meercats; Go Compare, etc. is an important element in 21st century selling. They don't care if it annoys customers so long as they remember the shop or product.

Other experts in this technique include Michael (Ryanair) O'Leary; Slimon Cowell; Xpose; every airhead celebrity unknown to Man; all TV cooks, etc., etc. These people have "some" talent but they become mega-successful because they are more annoying than toothache.

Seeing their success, it is little wonder that retailers use the same tactic.

But fear not! For very little money, you can save choons to your transportable telephonic device or similar electronical machine; ram the supplied earbuds down your lugholes and roam around the shop, oblivious to the piped dross leaking out of the shops' speakers.

PS: I prolonged a recent visit to a small (non-chain) hardware shop in North County Dublin (and bought more stuff) because they were playing CDs by the ORIGINAL artists. Illegal? Sure! Memorable? Oh, yes! A certain four-piece beat combo from Liverpool, quite well known in the black and white days. Will I go back again? I've already been back! Goodbye B&Q!

I worked in a pub in England in the late 80s early 90s. My boss had the most awful collection of records on the jukebox. There was at least one sad song about every county in Ireland and how the writer wished he/she was back there. Daniel O Donnell, Kevin Prendergast, Foster and Allen, the Wolfe Tones to name a few. There was one about the Irish rugby team, Dennis Taylor and Barry McGuigan that I haven't heard since and don't want to.

Anyway, one day he told me he was going back to Ireland for a hurling semi final and would I be ok to look after the place for a few days. Before he left he gave me the keys to his car, the office, the phone, pool table, slot machines and the jukebox. Shortly after he left his brother arrived in with some of his favourite records and a cunning plan. We switched some of the sh!ttiest records with The Pogues, Horslips, Thin Lizzy etc. But left the name cards unchanged. A lively weekend was had by all.

To make a long story even longer, The boss arrived back on the Monday and we forgot to switch the records back. Tipperary had won the match so when the pub opened at 5 he goes straight for the jukebox to play Slievenamon by the Wolfe Tones but got Dearg Doom by Horslips. Then he tried to play I'm at home in any Tipperary Town. He got The Battle March Melody by The Pogues. He blew his top, took the keys off me and took out the offending records and gave them the frisbee treatment.

There's loads of shopping centres not paying the royalties now either. Liffey Valley, Omni Park, Scotch Hall, Clare Hall, Artane Castle, Charlestown and probably more. Turned me right off the places. Terrible for the shops inside them :P

    IMRO and their fees

IMRO are a con job. They extort money from companies to playing music that most have bought legally and promote in-store.

Where does this money go? Good question... supporting young artists and paying royalties to other artists. Now if you buy a CD how does the royalty get calculated on that CD if it is played in a store?

The whole thing is a complete scam.

Awful as it is, I still prefer the bland muzak to the cover version sh-t.
Centra plays stuff that just didn't do well in the charts.

Has anyone noticed the music in all topaz stations recently? It's mostly adverts and then a song comes on. Original artists though.

Was in Lidl a week or so ago and whatever generic CD they were playing started skipping. Went on for about 30 seconds before somebody copped on and stopped it. Made for a much more interesting soundtrack to shopping. :P

they played this song in the centra I worked in:

I used to make up my own lyrics to the song and sing them under my breath just so I could get through the day.

I definitely suffer from some kind of Stockholm syndrome with the soundtrack from my days in Supervalu, wound up loving all the songs that played most often. It's a bit scary how much I love that Take That comeback album now.:(

Yea i worked in Dunnes before during when they had the normal music and then the changeover, it is the worst crap I have ever heard! I believe one of the management said it was some Norwegian company where these upcoming (and going nowhere) artists record their music since they have no rep they dont have to pay them royalties. This could be totally wrong but its the best explanation that I got.

BTW do they still play those god awful ringtones for xmas music?? They killed me you couldn't have said it better soul destroying!!!

The company is called Mood Media. Take a listen to the 'emerging artists' samples on their website. http://www.moodmedia.ie/music-samples/11/Pop-Adult-Contemporary

One of the shopping centres in Dundalk that used to play unusually good music recently succumbed to this rubbish.

When I was about 11 we went on a school tour to Dublin and they were playing a 90s- or relatively current at that time- mix in the Ilac.

Now I live in Dublin I realise they are playing the exact same songs in the Ilac, well over a decade on :pac:

What was it? The Marshes? Back in the day, they played a couple of some completely mad electro tunes. I'd say it mostly came from HMV store though.

    Yep, it's the Marshes!

Pavilions in swords often play mad electro tunes! I've noticed it depends on what time of the day it is. Morning it's 89s 90s music, afternoon top 40 and night mad electro! :pac:

Was in Elverys in Sligo yesterday and heard this fella doing a Pitbull impersonation on the radio, it was so bad it was hilarious.

Elverys is one of the main offenders for cover versions. absolutely awful. They should just play good music or no music at all! :pac:

In fairness Pitbull is pretty awful to begin with anyway!
