Yeah I got this one in blue from them, it's really nice I think and didn't take long considering it came from China, think it actually came registered too. I like it cause you don't have to open it to take calls:

However I also really like the rubber bumper case that our daytob sent me, so I'm kinda swapping around at the moment. I honestly think the bumper case would give it more protection in the event of a fall.

Also using the Orzly glass screen protector and it's great, not a single tiny bubble or mark of any kind, you wouldn't even know it's there. I don't know how in the name of God I did it but there isn't a spec of dust trapped underneath and it's on perfectly straight. I was a bit stressed doing it cause these thing don't normally go right for me!

Welcome to up-to-date open source technology! Don't be afraid to root it or like many people coming from iPhones, don't be afraid to sideload non playstore apps. Rooting will give you access to more than just blocking ads, most importantly when you've set your phone up exactly the way you want it, you can back everything up including the user data/settings for every app. There's other cool things you can do like lower the DPI with 'texdroider_dpi' to fit more on your screen etc.

If you did nothing else after rooting it than those 2 it's still well worth it.

Can you not get them without rooting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,760 ✭✭✭MyPeopleDrankTheSoup

i always root when i get the phone because you've to reset the phone if you want to root in the future. i think.

just got OPO there last week, very nice. slightly prefer it to my nexus 5 as the wifi and phone reception is better. apart from that, it's pretty much the same.

If you mean the three features I mentioned, ad blocking, user data backup and DPI settings then no, you need root access for those.

i jailbroke the iphone no problem but rooting seems a little complicated, any easy to follow guides people used?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,760 ✭✭✭MyPeopleDrankTheSoup

can't get much more detailed than this for the OPO

ya, strange that jailbreaking is way more complicated to code but the actual process iv ery easy. just great work the jailbreak teams.

Is all that necessary on the latest update or something? I did it on 25R and I'm sure it was a hell of a lot simpler than that. Here's a link to the way I did it, but can't confirm if the process is still the same for the latest update, I'm sure someone else can let us know. I didn't even bother with the backup part:

where is the best place to buy the 64gb one

Lads, has anyone seen anywhere selling the 16gb white OPO back housing? Wouldn't mind getting it so I can swap it out with my sandstone black housing.

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent fast charger for these? My 700mA Samsung seems to take 4+ hours to charge my battery up and the less said about the official kludge the better.

I'm using an old HTC one and have a cheap one from Amazon and both fully charge around the 2 hour mark.

Hmm was looking at this cable and trying to find a USB plug which would be able to take advantage of it.

I bought one of these after a few people recommending it. It charges almost as quickly as the supplier charger and works great with tablets etc.

Are there many here who bought the Chinese version over waiting on an invite? What are the differences between the versions?

    Hi all,

I've had my 64GB OPO for a couple of days now. First impressions are all good. I'm coming from a Note 2 so I immediately notice the sharper screen and faster processor. It's also a bit narrower than the Note 2 which is a bonus.

Having spent a few hours getting it set up (including two OTA updates which got me to 33R) I finally have all my apps loaded, home screens and widgets set up etc.

Overall I'm very impressed and happy with the phone and see myself being happy with it for a couple of years which is my normal phone upgrade cycle.

I have however noticed three things which I have an issue with which I'll share and perhaps others here might be able to help me fix or get a workaround for:-

    1. Menu Buttons - The menu buttons below the screen which I have set to being permanently backlit are barely noticeable. I would prefer to use them than the onscreen buttons and I obviously know where they are and how they work etc but it would be nice to be able to see them more clearly!! Is there a brightness workaround? Can the colour be changed to white instead of blue?

    2. Sideloading APK's - I have a number of non Play Store APK's I want to install such as Paddy Power which I have downloaded to the OPO but when I get the "Do you want to install this application menu with the "Cancel" and "Install" buttons on the bottom the "Install" button won't activate, only the "Cancel" button works. I tried to download and install several different APK's but have the same issue with them all. I have enabled "Unknown Sources" in the Security menu and disabled the "Verify apps" option so I'm out of ideas and would appreciate some help on how I can sideload APK's to the OPO.

    3. Wifi Signal - I have a dual channel router connected to 100mb UPC fibre broadband. I normally connect to the 2.4Ghz network as it has a better signal strength and all my other devices perform well on it. The OPO however has terrible performance on it. I went to look at a YouTube video and it stuttered along with a lot of buffering. I did a Speedtest and the result was just 1.39Mbps download and 2.16Mbps upload. I then immediately switched to the 5Ghz network and re-ran the test and got 104.57Mbps upload and 11.05Mbps upload!!

    See

    ixb779.jpg

    and

    23tjmgg.jpg

I repeated the process of switching network and re-doing the speed test several times and every time performance on the 2.4Ghz network was less than 2mb download whereas on the 5Ghz network was up near the 100mb I'm paying for.

    See

    2igdbg5.jpg

I also checked the 2.4Ghz from the same spot at the same time on my old Note 2 and it was getting way higher scores than the OPO.

Does the above indicate a problem with the OPO's WiFi radio/antenna? Is this a known issue? Is it something there's a software fix for or is it something I need to flag to OPO as a warranty issue?

Ordered the same day early evening and got it 7am friday morning.
So it's 4 working days if you order early on the day

I never owned an android so my question might appear simple/ridiculous, I am just trying to learn as much as possible before making any mistake.
Is rooting essential/important in order to enjoy the phone? what is rooting? is there any risk? would you recommend to root the phone or just use it with the latest software available? cheers.

    1. That's was supposed to have been addressed to some extent on 33R, they were supposed to have made it brighter but clearly it's still not bright enough, so they must have brightened it as much as possible. That's obviously the max those LEDs can take, so looks like you'll just have to suck that one up! :)

    2. I would bet that one of your running apps is conflicting with you sideloading other apps. Happened to me on my TV box, normally it would be one of the apps that require root, in my case it was Droidmote server. You'll have to go in to your running apps and kill them one by one starting with the most likely, and keep checking till you get the "Install" tab activated. When you find out which one is causing it, you'll know to disable it any time you need to sideload.

    3. My OPO connects perfectly on 2.4g, so I think it must be down to your router or settings on your router or the OPO. Having said that my eFibre router from Eircom does not appear to be 5g so I can only connect at 2.4g anyway. I get practically the same speeds on Wifi 2.4g on the OPO as I do with the wired connection. So no idea what your problem is but I take it you tried the Auto setting and also tried changing the Wifi region code on the OPO?

    @Alwald.
rooting opens up a world of possibilities, but its not totally needed for this phone. if you are unsure about it or not technical enough then dont worry about it. if however you want to try it out, then get yourself a cheapy one that you know can be rooted and do that, rather than a 350e phone. This is just my guy feeling, while it might seem easy, your first attempt and you could be left with a very expensive paperweight.

An android phone however is not like an iphone or whatever you are used to. you can open apps from various places and stores, you arent limited to one store, you can side load apps and also mess around with the settings. Others could probably explain it better but this phone is amazing and isnt full of bloat without needing to root it. but its up to you.
