But there is no entitlement to use Croke Park, only game that is there is the AI final unless exceptional circumstances! This game is in the calendar for over a year, and is worth millions to the economy. The GAA have forked out substantial money to make it happen, and the date works out because of the bank holiday in America.

People can keep cribbing about it, but it wasn't a issue on Saturday, nobody gave it a thought about what happens if there is a replay.

It's not just the replay of. Dublin v Donegal the following Saturday is being kept free for but also if Mayo v Kerry goes to a second replay. No one considered that fact either.

If both semi finals had to be replayed, what would be wrong with having a double header on the Saturday before the hurling final?

A double header semi final would be a disaster from ticketing POV that means roughly 20,000 tickets per county, thats not even counting the sponsors getting their slice etc.

not much of a difference playing in the Gaelic Grounds with those numbers though?.

Gaelic grounds will hold nearly all of what was in Croke park yesterday. Croke Park with a double semi can't hold 50,000 each.

Surely 30,000 would prefer to go to gaelic grounds than sit at home and see the teams in Croke park because it's big and amazing and it's in Dublin and stuff?

Gaelic grounds won't have to give up as many corporate tickets as all the boxes in Croker are already used and a large percentage of the premium too.

    I think you deliberately misunderstood.
Capacity of the Gaelic Grounds is just under 50,000.

Given there's a lesser likelihood of having a 2 replayed semi finals, whats wrong with taking the chance of it being a double header?.
If its not a double header, then there's a greater possibility of a larger attendance as a result of the occasion.
If it is, then the difference is lessened.
All teams get to play in Croke Park, without having to send them off down to Limerick for a semi final most would expect should be played in Croker?

Is it not just under 50,000? That's what I was saying. It will hold the majority of what was in Croke park yesterday.

It's not Leitrim or Fermanagh or Carlow... These boys will have plenty of times to play in Croke park again. And sure the GAA need the money for the upkeep of Croke park too. And it's nearer to limerick for both so money is saved. Nice to save some money.

As a Galway man, I have to say I thought the referee was playing for a draw as soon as the Kerry goal went in. There were several fouls on Mayo players in the last 5 minutes that he chose to ignore. They were within scoring distance too.

Double headers appear to have been perfectly fine for quarter finals in the past too though?. And how is this more convenient for the Mayo fans?. Given the public transport links are almost entirely based on routes to Dublin, how does having it in Limerick improve things for the many without a car?

We have a problem at full back lads.. Ger Cafferkey isnt producing his form of the past two seasons and hasnt been all year.

Cummins gave him a bit of a run around in the Connacht Final and Hurley did too in the Quarters... but yesterday was concerning because it was 50.50 high balls that he was seemingly misjudging every time and being beaten to them. We conceded 2 goal chances through this, and one of them was taken.

    Whats the solution?

James Horan won't drop Cafferkey. Quotes below from interview yesterday with Horan regarding the goal.
If you look at one of those balls, there was two of us on David Moran when he kicked in that ball so it shouldn’t have gone in. So that’s where we should have cut it out there; right on the sideline.
“It was just a hopeful ball in. We should have been able to block that one out.”

Management/tactics and selection based on "cutting the ball out" is ridiculous. Teams will get plenty opportunities to kick the ball in.
Hopeful ball in is what it was and it wasn't dealt with. This is a consistent pattern for four seasons.
If Kieran Donaghy starts the next day only Seamus O'Shea can mark him.
Cafferkey has not changed all that much the last two years. Name a game where he has caught at least two high balls kicked into the square? As a full back on a top four team he consistently looks to punch every ball kicked in. Yesterday in my view he had a catchable ball and punched it. Donal Vaughan yellow carded diving in on the resulting breaking ball. The opposition know high ball kicked into our square is going to be won or at least broken to be won.
If Kerry start Donaghy at 14 and we lineup Cafferkey on him this game may be lost early. I believe they will make such an adjustment right before throw in and it could send Mayo into a total tailspin.

Hopeful ball in my hole, it was a superb, pinpoint delivery.

Horan really can be terribly ungracious at times.

Well done to each and every Mayo supporter there yesterday, we really did make a difference! It was brilliant to see so much green and red flying. The volume of cheering on the lads has noticeably increased too, the lads on the pitch notice it too!

Anyone else think that Gavin Duffy should be on the subs the next day just for taking care of star if and when he is brought on? Fielding wise he would be well capable of it. Rough housing he would be well able for it.

On another point are you only allowed to play one of the named 26?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 973 ✭✭✭homewardbound11

Apparently the gaa are thinking of bringing in a rule change to allow Gaelic games to be played in croke park. That is if the stadium is available and not used for concerts / American Football or other activities that will give he gaa brand an international apperAnce or a few more million.

Croke Park was built for the GAA. Its doesn't need to be official. Farcial stuff by the GAA. Money obsessed nothing else.

There is one player can mark Donaghy and that's Seamus OShea. With his increased fitness he looks quicker. Need to be minimum 6'3" for Donaghy n able to hold him up 1 on 1.
AOS too much lost from attack n fouls too easily. Vaughan not good enough in air n lose him from attack. Parsons/Gibbons not got SOS tackling or power. Shane McHale/Keane/Cafferkey none would outfield him n we have James ODonoghue n Paul Geaney to be minding also. So unlikely to be the numbers to double up on Donaghy. Andy Moran might come in without dropping Freeman with Kevin McGloughlin remaining at wing back. Parsons/Gibbons/Aidan O'Shea three man midfield.

Yeah seriously concerned what we'll come up with if Kieran Donaghy starts at full forward,Ger is definitely struggling in the air...Lots of the suggested changes...move Seamie O Shea back on him...too disruptive.Surely Barry Moran is too slow for full back, could compete in the air but not sufficiently quick to cover for the corner backs if JOD gets a run on them.

So proud of the 20 lads, honestly thought it was a lost cause at HT.Too much respect given to JOD,too conservative a set up with Tom Cunniffe as sweeper, did'nt really work.Michael Geaney had the freedom of the park in the first half and caused untold problems. One has to accept JOD will cause an element of damage.Similar scenario to the Cork game after HT,Lee's pre HT sending off allowed us to throw off the shackles and the half backs to bomb forward.Expect more of the same next week from the get go,man to man marking and Tom Cunniffe to mark JOD and allow Keith Higgins play his natural game.

Cillian O Connor was superb, ditto Colm Boyle but how good was Aidan O Shea in the second half.He seemed to be on a one man mission to bring us back into the game, absolutely superb. He came for an awful lot of attention from the Kerry team.

Tad disappointed with the 2 lads I was clamouring for to start...Jason Gibbons ..did'nt really get to the pitch of the game.David Moran and Johnny Buckley were to the fore pre the break.Watched the game back and concluded Alan Freeman was noticeably more effective than when watching it live..set up a few scores, had a goal chance. The poor quality of ball delivery did'nt help but I can't help thinking Alan needs to be a bit more physically imposing. He's the quality and potential to cause significant damage if he uses his physicality to win those dirty 50/50 balls.

Real shame re Lee Keegan's red card, correct decision by the letter of the law.:(

Hopefully Ger Caff and Kevin McLaughlin will be fit to start on Saturday.

They did it was part of the wriggle room comment, but everyone just wants to leave that bit out either by choice or due to ignorance.

We would urge as many Mayo supporters as possible to get tickets for the replay in Limerick. We need as much support as yesterday, if not more! We need to turn the Gaelic Grounds into a #seaofgreenandred

Wish I could be there!! Have a very long standing commitment for Saturday that can't be changed (was even organised for a day that definitely wouldn't have a mayo match) but I've found a willing replacement that is going to use my season ticket.

Exactly, I need stand tickets, not terrace tickets.

I wonder when these will be on sale? Or if they are going to be released through the GAA website at all.

I still think James ODonoghue had plenty space. We were as well to do a double directly on him. We looked relatively loose. I rewatched the game n he was collecting ball with space around him. Higgins is the man for him with a more concentrated effort of man marking. JOD scored 1-3 from play, was through for two goal chances taking one n hit the upright to win it. Think he had a few passes as well in run up to scores. When he ran at Higgins it was the first time I'v ever seen the 2014 JOD held up in the tackle like that. That was very impressive from Higgins.

6.30 Official Guide Part 1 only mentions the final only in Croke Park

Tickets.ie had north terrace tickets earlier until about 3pm, when they sold out

They have been on sale, they are gone already - tickets went on sale around noon and North terrace only were on sale. Other stand must be gone through clubs and to season ticket holders
