Edit: I have no idea what the slightly dodgy static screen shot at the beginning is - it does not appear as a clip

It's just clickbait. You can make that screen anything you want. It's quite prevalent in those kind of videos.

Wet one on the M50 today in South Dublin

Rain is hardest from 1min in,
At 3:30 a pretty reckless driver hits a large flood of standing water.

Visibility is nearly better on the camera than it was from drivers seat.
That doesn't seem to slow people down though..

You should have pulled into the left hand lane as you don't seem to be overtaking anyone from 3.00 on.

Would reduce the risk of getting hit from behind and that driver in the silver car would not have been forced to undertake you.

    Just sayin loike.

It's OK to use the middle lane when there is traffic to the left, a three lane road has two driving lanes and one overtaking lane. It is better to have two lanes of traffic all keeping a safe distance rather than all crammed into the left.

I think you're going to have a few (myself included) disagree with you on that.

    Yep, this x 1000.
I moved to the centre lane at the rathfarnham on ramp, simply because it makes for a safer merge between other drivers and myself.
You can see when the Octavia & Renault scenic merge on just how much water is on the road surface.

Then I don't move back to the left because there is a car in that lane behind the scenic, the Mitsubishi lancer which allegedly undertakes me later.

The lancer was leaving a braking gap and I had no interest in jumping into it.
The traffic in left two lanes was in a staggered formation with braking gaps to the front.

Then, the reason it looks like the lancer undertakes me is because I notice the standing water and lift off quite a bit in advance of it to reduce speed, didn't brake though.

Watch again and you will see.

I'm with Dolan/RandomAccess on this one myself...

I drive that stretch a lot (based in South Dublin too) and I almost always sit in lane 2/3 along there.

Why? Because you have a stream of traffic joining at Dundrum, more getting off/on at Tallaght and then between there and Blanch there's a constant flow of cars merging/leaving over the space of only a few km. (try getting off at the Naas exit northbound in heavy traffic and it's great fun as you have cars merging in the same 200m stretch as people trying to exit)

It's far safer to be as well away from some of the last minute ducking and diving that goes on as possible than blindly obeying the "rules". Look at the silver car that merges out of Dundrum in the video (2:55 onwards) - slams the brakes for no reason and only joins lane 1 at the last minute despite PLENTY of room to do so safely beforehand! Feck that.. It's bad enough having eejits cutting in front of you from the left without having them doing it on all sides as well.

with visibility so poor and with so many drivers unable to operate the "lights on" switch, I wouldn't be making any unnecessary lane changes tbh

That drives me insane! Heavy rain or getting dark and the amount of morons tootling along with no lights on is incredible.. then add in the Irish love for silver cars.

Auto lights should be fitted as standard (and hard-wired) to all Irish market cars.

Yeah the rathfarnham on ramp is a busy one with poor visibility for the person on M50 because of the gentle right curve and the ramp being an uphill slope. Generally I will move to lane 2 until after traffic merged then back to lane one.
I could post a time lapse clip showing that I do move to the left once circumstances allow, but I don't have video editing software so havr no idea how to that.

Can't believe this has degenerated into another lanes debate.
Thought someone would be more interested in the guys in overtaking lane driving with no regard for the conditions.

Got to agree, any chance we can have more videos and less silly debates?

I would simply ban "sidelights" and have a simple on/off switch. If the ignition is on the on position is for headlights if the ignition is off the parking lights are on.

In the off position the DLRs are on.

I don't know, I think the overtaker has all the laws on his side. It's ok to overtake on a single white line if there is an obstruction in the road, the cam car was certainly trying to be an obstruction. It's also breaking the ROTR (and probably the law?) to speed up while someone is overtaking you. The cam car then goes and puts incriminating evidence on the internet

I dunno, maybe the rules of the road are different wherever it was shot, but that looks like a solid white line, a pedestrian crossing and oncoming traffic in a built up area to me. I could scarcely think of a worse time and place to attempt and overtake.

    Another version..
Camera car may have slowed down looking for something / somewhere and then drove on.
Impatient driver decides to overtake camera car, (at start of broken white line) with oncoming traffic bearing down on him and ends up making a sh! te of things.

At the end of the day we don't know, because we don't have the 5 -10 minutes of footage before the incident.

    EDIT:

It was recorded on the Island of Madeira.

Overtaking car probably had an ok view of the pedestrian crossing at the point of overtake and the "oncoming" car had been parked stationary with its indicator on for a while too. He may have misjudged it with the car approaching from behind it, but I think the camera car definitely knew what was going on, he could have jammed on the brakes and avoided the eventual result.

Exactly, regardless of the events leading up to the event, the dash cam driver could have avoided it, he instead decides that hes gonna screw the other driver no matter what happens.

For me the timing and rate of speed up is waaaaaaay too co-incidental.
Camcar was acting the complete cnut.

I know we had a discussion about old folk driving the wrong way on roads before. Looks like this was the case with this crash on the M8 between Mitchelstown and Fermoy. Tragic outcome. Looks like the 71 year old woman driving the geep was driving the wrong way on the motorway. The 28 male driver of the car died from the crash. Just shows how dangerous these mistakes can be. Very sad incident.

She should be done for manslaughter. Ignorance is no excuse.

Six of one and a half dozen of the other in all fairness. This is what happens when two equally thick gob****es meet.
