Are Upc doing any deals on MUTV while the pre-season is on for the friendlies?

No Idea, but their are UPC reps on boards. Ask one of them.

I would be shocked if Madrid let Varane go but if he wants first team football he might force a move.

Can we just have 10 posts of sunshine and lollipops? This thread is a real downer today :(

Varane and Jose had a good relationship at Madrid, Id say Chelsea might trump us if he became available.

Juan Mata is the best player at United, period. The team should be built around him.

Still cannot fcuking believe he plays for Manchester United.

I like the guy but for me he's still in the "unproven panic buy we didn't need" bracket.

There is no real evidence yet that he's been a good signing.

The word unproven doesn't belong on the same page when talking about Juan Mata, never mind sentence.

While its unfair to judge him yet, so far Mata was a panic buy and hasnt shown much to justify why we bought him yet. Hes been average at best in a United shirt

His point was very clear indeed. The signing of Mata did not change our fortunes in the slightest, it did not fix any of the problems that needed fixing and he did not give us anything we didn't already have.

In the long run it may indeed turn out to be a worthy signing but as it stands that has not been proven.

You don't have much knowledge of football.

Well if that was his point he shouldn't have called him unproven. He didn't change the fortunes because his signing didn't get rid of all the players who clearly didn't give a shìt and weren't playing for the manager which is something that everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten in recent weeks and will be one of LVG's biggest hurdles if he's going to change anything.

I think what he meant was he hasnt proved to be worth 37 million yet for United and hasnt proved to be a success at the club yet.

He has proved at Chelsea that he can do the business alright, but whether he will recapture that form remains to be seen.

There are two World Class players at United, and there are a number of excellent players who either have not risen for whatever reason (Rooney and Kagawa spring to mind). Then there are players like Adnan and De Gea who could very well be stars soon. Even Rafael could develop into the player we all hope for. I am happy they are at the club and going to be utilised and developed by someone like LVG.

Van Persie and Mata are world class, full stop. Mata came into United with a lot of pressure on him and a manager who had lost the squad and still managed 6 goals in 15 games. Van Gaal will know how to use him and if it means dropping Rooney albeit.

He proved himself at Chelsea and in the Premier League and Champions league, hence the 37 million price tag.

None of them were world class when we signed them. They became world class and reached their potential at United though

ah wouldn't agree with that now, evra was one of the best left backs around when we signed him, and vidic was immense players at Moscow, just didn't see much of vidic. loads of clubs including real Madrid wanted evra 2 years before he signed for us.

and Dwight yorke was one of the best strikers in Europe along with cole for 2 years, just could never showcase his talents in Europe with villa

I actually think Mata could be our player of the season next year.

Still remins to be seen TBH, he hasnt shown the form since he signed that made him POTY with Chelsea. I do have hopes that LVG will get him to that level again tho.

For me you have to judge the signing in its merits at the time if we are talking about how transfer business is done. He was a great signing, he is a great player. I couldn't be any happier that he was signed. It was a great bit of business as United were able to get a player that Chelsea wouldn't have sold to United if they waited till the summer.

In the long run it may not work out but that is a different issue.

I agree, he could. Hes a fantastic player who could remind people why he was Chelseas POTY 2 years in a row

Varane is by far the best young CB around at the minute. There is no chance Madrid will let him go

You can only call him a great signing if he plays well consistently, just like any signing really. Ill judge him at the end of the season as to whether hes a good signing or not.

Personally, I'm getting the feeling that our spending is pretty much done for the summer. With that in mind, I think we'll be in a fight with Liverpool and Spurs for the fourth place spot. If we get a spate of injuries, we might have to settle for a Europa league place. :(

right now, this is our first 11 for next season IMO. the players in bold need to be "replaced" as they are not good enough to be first 11 in the bigger games so we need two players signed. if we do this, ill be more confident about a better season than struggling for 4th place.

    DDG

    Jones-
    Evans
    Rafael
    Shaw
    Herrera
    Carrick
    TV/AJ/Nani
    Mata
    Rooney

If you are judging by the merits of the time then it was a poor signing because like I said the signing did not change our fortunes in the slightest. Players and signings are a means to an end and the signing of Mata did not achieve anything.

A good signing would have made an impact on the teams performances, a proper midfielder might even have gotten us into fourth place, thats the standard a signing should be judged by not some nebulous delight just to have him on board.

I'm very happy he is a United player and in the long run I am confident he will contribute, but in the short term it just wasn't what we needed and so was a poor signing by the merits of the time.

I think it goes deeper than that. Jones and Evans are both very injury prone and will likely spend a chunk of the season out. Rafeal is also injury prone and could miss a lot. Our two other CBs are Smalling, and Keane who has little in the way of experience. Also, we have no back up for Shaw (RISKY)
Carrick isn't good enough against any of the sides in the top half. Cleverley is worse, Fellaini doesnt fit in, I would fancy myself in a match against Anderson, and Fletcher is unreliable in terms of fitness.
Lots of problems, very few being addressed - Despite us being one of the richest clubs in the world.

    Bad management continues.

so signing an 18 year old for £29m makes you happy? are you actually serious?

the only people that should be happy are the southampton board and fans, its a crazy deal and we are the only club in the world who would actually sanction it.

i am happy we signed him as i hope he will nail down the LB position for years to come, but i think theres £12 to £15million over spend there that could and should have been spent towards a genuine top quality world class attacking player which is where our first priority should be.

    Yes I am serious.

I was critical of the price as it was high for an 18 year old. But I was happy that the club were willing to pay a premium to get a player they really wanted, penny pinching and value in the market no longer the greatest priority. Even though Van Gaal was at the World Cup they were getting deals done early unlike Moyes and his indecision early in the job.

It is possible to have reservations about a fee or player while also being happy with how a deal was done.

Shaw was certainly worth more than 15 million to United.

On priority, the club should only prioritise money from a budget, not the order players are signed. United wouldn't pay that much for Shaw if stopped them signing someone of greater priority and available.

We would need cover at LB and CB too

yea he is quality, needs to bulk up a bit more but that will come in time, fergie almost signed him but the zidane factor helped him move to Madrid, up there with marquinhos and mangala as prob best young centre backs around. Nastasic at city also good

While I find it very hard to believe that there will be no more signings, Van Gaal showed at the World Cup that he is able to take some limited players, sprinkled with a couple of greats, and have them perform to a high standard as a unit. It shouldn't be all doom and gloom either way.
