My new Vodafone modem is still sitting in its box. I haven't touched any settings on my existing UTV modem and my phone and broadband service is still working perfectly

So, has anyone who had UTV fibre actually done the switch to Vodafone? Did you get any notification to change out the modem? What did the process look like?

"Changeover" was seamless if it can be called a "Changeover" - just an IP change, no increase in speed - indeed it's noticeably slower and a bit draggy. Did ask VF when Fibre would kick in and was offered NEW 18 month contract .....

    WTF!

Is that legal? Thought I was getting speeds up to 100 Mbs but averaging at 3Mbs over the 3 days so far

Assuming you're in an area with available fibre coverage (stick your landline into step 2 to find out) obtaining the faster speed requires fibre installation from your master phone socket. Your new plan is uncapped, you're paying the same anyway and the new modem takes either fibre or traditional ADSL - so if you're in coverage it's a no brainer.

No one here appears to have been billed so far - but from the website under other charges fibre installation is free under a 24 month contract for "older plans"

(They've revamped broadband package offers in the last 24 hours - Simply Broadband, Simply Broadband Max, Simply Talk, Home, Home Extra, Home Max are all "older plans" now)

I'm changed over from UTV now just two weeks. Went from the regular UTV 8mbs broadband to Vodafone fibre.

New Vodafone modem in use and getting 72-75 mbs d/load and 24 u/load speed. I'm happy with that. I signed up to Vodafone Home for €40 p/m.

    Seems ok to me anyway.

Plugged in my Vodafone modem and all is working ok. I'd prefer to use existing modem though. Anyone know the settings inc Username and password etc?

You're correct.....my mistake. Upload speeds are around 18 mbs sec.

Just checked it now. Still fine for all my needs.

I switched to Eircom, they were meant to install on Wednesday but nobody turned up, phoned eircom and they said it was showing on their system that the guy had rescheduled the appointment (news to me) - after a bit of too-ing and fro-ing i was offered 2 months free and installation today if i decided not to cancel.
I will await the first bill to see if that happens!! Anyway, it was installed today and after some issues with the wifi settings on my laptop i got connected and am happy enough with the speeds -wifi seems slower than UTV 34/19 compared to about 40/20 with UTV, ethernet is faster than what UTV told me was my max speed?? I got 76/19 today compared with 46/20 with UTV. UTV told me the maximum my line was capable of was 50?? That said, once i switched to fibre with UTV the upload speeds were better than the download speeds i used to get on NGB lol

Regarding billing, i get a horrible feeling i may get 3 this month, one from utv for any calls i made in june, one from eircom and possibly one from VF as i don't know who was providing my line/BB from the 1st until this morning!

    Got sorted here - https://support.vodafone.ie/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1003&PARTITION_ID=1&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTRY=ie&USERTYPE=1&ARTICLE_ID=2266

I left the DNS at automatic.

    All working ok.

I've been having it out with VF over on their forum. If you continued to have service after July 1st and before your new service kicked in, then it was from VF, and they WILL be charging you. My new service is due to kick in on Monday, so I've to pay Vodafone 47.50 for the joy of 7 days of a service I never consented to (and phoned UTV twice to cancel).

I too phoned UTV and told them i did not wish to go with vodafone and would be switching to another provider. UTV said they would remove me - which i took to mean my line would not switch to VF.
I also told Vodafone that i would go with another provider. I will contact Eircom and check what day they actually took over the line but I have no intention of giving VF anything, if they want money they can take it up with UTV. Their (VF) letter states if they do NOT hear from you within the next 30 days the changes would be accepted- They heard from me.

I thought i read on their boards forum that UTV customers would know when their line had switched over as their UTV modem would have a red light on it and the customer could then switch over routers.

Would it not be a pro-rata charge that was owed? (If you hadnt contacted them to cancel that is ;) )

I havent plugged in the modem Vodafone sent me.
    Havent done anything at all.
And still connecting fine with my normal speed. Is changing to he Vodafone box obligatory at some point, or can I just leave everything alone (was happy enough to take up the default Vodafone replacement package) ?

leex posted the configuration settings for existing modems above.

The modem is "free" subject to an 18 month contract - so if you're happy with the service i wouldn't be sending it back. Particularly, if you're not on fibre and want to upgrade at some point or just value a back up (my last UTV modem is pristine white still wrapped in it's box).

    Thanks.
My question is more that everything is still working normally with my old modem without me doing anything at all. Is that the intention, and that I need to do nothing if I just want to stay on my existing 24Mb (reality 15Mb) connection ?
Will hang on to the new box all right, since probably will go fibre some time. So just put it away until then ?

Like you I'm still "tuned in" to the UTV settings and sticking with VF, but at some stage in the next couple of weeks Vodafone are going to kill the UTV login and transition us all across to their network proper. We're supposed to get an email in advance after which we'll be faced with a Vodafone login screen. From memory, the PPPOE, etc. router settings are the same - only the Username: vodafone@vodafone.ie & Password: broadband are different.

But that I'm still trying to sign up for fibre and will need that new (humongous) modem I'd stick with current settings to the bitter end. Just make sure you've got the old router admin password or reset procedure as required when the time comes!

    WTF is going on.

I haven't got a single letter or email from UTV. I arrived home today to find a Vodafone router having arrived and absolutely no explanation why.

I have no login details at all for the new router. What an absolute mess.

Anyone have a number I can ring with Vodafone with to get the new updated details for my sub ?

I also had unlimited download cap on my broadband package. Are Vodafone obliged to maintain this going forward ?

Vodafone don't have a download cap on most of their packages. I'd check out their website to see if they have a cheaper package than what you are currently playing.

Have just received a letter from VF with Confirmation of my SEPA Direct Debit mandate instruction - so for anyone wondering did UTV hand over their bank details, Yes they did!

I will be writing to VF to cancel it and will be visiting my bank this afternoon to do the same.
I find it amazing that they can state in the letter "that because you have signed up to a SEPA direct debit and have not signed a paper mandate, you authorise ........". I signed up to no such thing.

Also, as a side note, they state in the letter that bills will be issued at least 7 days in advance of a direct debit appearing on your account. I always thought it was longer than 7 days, has this changed?

I'm absolutely staggered that UTV gave no warning at all about this. Not even an email.

Been a customer of theirs for 6 or 7 years at this stage. Most unprofessional conduct.

Enquired with Vodafone this morning. Used to pay with my credit card with UTV. Turns out Vodafone did not get my credit card details from UTV (thankfully).

When BT pulled out same thing. VF speeds dropped and CS was poor. Went to Sky as at the time, their was much better.

Ok, SKY do not have Fibre

Just wondering how many more will have the same experience with VF.

    Good luck

Has anyone been able to register with "My Vodafone" ? i want to register and check if Vodafone are tracking my bandwidth usage as UTV still seem to be  When I go to register it won't accept my customer number. I'm using the number which is on the letter they sent regarding direct debit payments.

I've been lucky, I assume partly because I was happy to switch so did it immediately. Few hickups at the start but the customer service were very good over the phone and called twice to ensure it went smoothly. Generally get through to them promptly without delay. Plan was pretty much what I wanted and only a small bit more expensive.

I've used the new modem as I switched to fibre.

Vodafone have a lot to live up to. I was with UTV for over 10 years with very little hassle. Only fair to give them a chance.

Received an email that they set me up on the wrong package:
"I have just checked your line and it can take a speed of 20 MB to 30 MB on Fiber broadband. However, you have been set up on regular broadband and this has a max speed on your line of 12 MB. I am very sorry about this error as it would appear that you have been set up on the wrong broadband"

Seems though that they'll send me ANOTHER ginormous modem if I sign up for Fibre!

Anyway I'm gonna have to give them a chance, even though my speed has lagged noticeably since the takeover.

Very disappointed with UTV though, very disappointed.

I'm one of the UTV customers whose service has been taken over by vodafone.

My location is about 1.8km south of Ballybofey, a fibre-enabled town. Along the phone lines, the distance to the exchange is probably closer to 2.5km. There are a number of fibre-enabled cabinets around the town, and at the entrance to larger housing estates, but the closest to me is still over 2km away.

At the moment my UTVConnect 'up to 24Mb' ADSL broadband gives me a fairly consistent 7Mb/s down and 0.5Mb/s up. The replacement package proposed by vodafone is fibre.

Has anyone been connected to a fibre cabinet over 2km away, or would they even consider connecting me at that distance? I would have thought it unlikely, but if they leave me on ADSL can they charge for their suggested Home Extra package (I notice they have changed their packages on the website again)?

I suppose they could connect me to fibre as a future-proofing exercise but could this have any negative implications at this stage?

I'm currently a UTV customer, well I was one.

I phoned Vodafone earlier today to see what the situation was. I have to say their call centre staff are dreadful. One guy I spoke sounded bored and like he didn't even want to take the call. He told me I should plug in my modem this evening when I got home as all was now transferred to Vodafone.

I did that when I got home, but the red internet light came, and stayed on. I rang tech support and again brutal call centre staff. Asking why I had plugged in the new modem and why hadn't I waited for an engineer to visit?? I asked the chap why I needed an engineer. He told me it was because the engineer would turn on the fiber broadband. I informed him I already had fiber previously with UTV. He got flustered then and had to go off and check what to say next. Dreadful. Apparently I now have to wait for a text to say to swap out the modem. Is this true? Anyone else getting this wonderful customer service from Vodafone?

I didn't wait and it worked fine. So I'd say that line about the text isn't correct. They might not even have mobile details for some customers.

I say fine, btw, but I've already asked if my line is at its max speed, as it's about on par with UTV speeds, but certainly not massively quicker, and certainly not fibre...

VF never contacted me about fibre in any way - I was hoping they'd make it a conversion option for those in the area for it...

I'd give VF a ring and see if they're willing to put you on fibre - any uncapped package I looked at - and the 'home off peak value' I'm on - is the same price ADSL or VDSL.

UK data (conservatively) indicates it's viable up to 3km from the cabinet:

http://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/2013/chart-bt-fttc-vdsl2-speed-against-distance (Thanks to MBSnr for the link)

All very abstract, but you might check what speeds they get in Ballybofey - assuming at worst attenuation is pro rata and they "start" with say half the chart BT speed (ie. 38Mb) - giving 6.25Mb/s (rather than 12.5Mb/s) at 2.5km from the cabinet ...

Check the eircom web site. There is a page there for seeing what speed one may get. This would indicate to fibre is available
VF has their site also. The see what they both say.

It's a dual fibre-adsl modem and as most packages cover either at the same price, conversion where possible makes sense. Fibre installation on these "older plans" is free under a 24 month contract (see other charges).
