It really brings home the mortality rate among young birds when you see a clutch size like that!

You can count eleven ducklings in that image, but believe it or not two others were trailing behind too!I presume they're all hers?If for instance another female comes to a sticky end,so to speak, will another female adopt her brood?
The chances are the vast majority of those little fellas won't see adulthood.
I've seen plenty of herons along this waterway and there are pike(which I've heard can take ducklings and other freshwater chicks) present too.

Pike will take young ducklings of that size.
Easy pickings and mother can't really do much about it.
Herons will also take them aswell. A stray duckling will be too easy for a heron to not take.
Also seagulls will take them aswell

I was really surprised to see this Damselfly in the front garden yesterday.

How far would they venture from water?

I don't know how far but many species do disperse away from water to hunt in woods and fields for a time.

I came across five painted lady butterflies last week and thought it was early for us, until I found out the nearby school had raised them in class for the kids and had just released them that day. :o Apparently, it has become common in schools and the suppliers always send painted ladies. Great to see kids learning stuff first hand like this - caterpillar to butterfly - marvellous!
