I was wondering why this Jay wasn't flying away from me this morning.

And this is why, Jay junior was hiding on the forest floor.

I wonder is it possible that a Heron would be 'attacked' by a crow- that is what seemed to be happening when I was out for a walk this morning by the Liffey:confused:

It's possible the heron was looking about the nests for young birds to eat and the crow chased it off

Crows and many other birds will harry large birds in their territory. Sometimes the mobbing causes the heron to regurgitate food but that is not the intended consequence, which is to remove a perceived predator from the area.

Looks like it. The bill on a juvenile is much darker than an adult.

Would it be Beautiful Carpet does anyone know. It's a bad photo, it would not stay still long enough.

    Hi,

That's a LBBG. You can tell by the leg colour. The LBBG has yellow legs and the GBBG has pinkish legs.

    Regards

Beautiful Carpet all right. A widespread species in Ireland:

My best ever nights moth trapping - Convolvulus & Elephant Hawkmoths plus a whole host of other goodies :D.

Convolvulus HM is a rare migrant to Ireland (mainly late summer/autumn) and is the second largest moth species regularly recorded here.
