A mod that has an interest in the forum(as in horseracing) would sort everything out. I have been told by a mod in private mail that they are not required to post, only apply site rules.

We have lost so many great posters here because of bad attitudes of mods, again by private mail a mod has said to me that good posters tend to leave because of the behaviour of bad posters. Bad posters tend to leave because they are seen through and don't like it when they get called out for their behaviour.

This type of mindset is the root of all evil around here.

One step at a time. I am not sure exactly how you define bad attitude, however I hope you accept that by the very fact that this thread was started is an acknowledgement of issues and an attempt to resolve those issues.

And for the record, we would expect mods to be regular enough posters in a forum, however life gets in the way occasionally. Again, I refer you to my previous comments about the fact that we are working on this.

In fairness Sparks, your remarks arent really contributing anything positive to this debate/thread.

Considering Urban Sea's last post was left up and in some cases in other forums there has been threads informing people that they are leaving boards I think this is a very poor decision. Was it the fact that it mentioned a rival forum the reason Colonel Sanders post got deleted?

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=90785481&postcount=3085 Urban Sea's last post

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=85671562
Entire thread informing users that a poster is leaving boards on a different forum.

Incorrect - a forum is only as worthwhile as the people who contribute to it.
Right up to the point where a small clique believes they are more important than the forum, at which point they destroy it for the vast majority of others, at which point the mods act on the part of the forum, not the posters.

In other forums. Modded under different charters, with different problems, by different people.

Eh Urban Sea's post was in this forum in the off-topic thread.

But not the entire thread you pointed to, and US's last post was long before the mod instruction on that thread.

Ok guys, could I ask that we park this one for now?

Urban Sea closed his account without warning, I'm not quite sure what the full story is with this, but it is unusual for a moderator to do this.

I will go on record as saying he is still welcome to come back to the site and the forum, there was nothing acrimonious about it as far as I can tell.

But for now, what is done is done, we can't change that.

I can see this forum going the way of the Poker forum if things are not resolved, I know that the mods have a job to do but surely unless a serious breach or a potential legal problem arises from a post they should not get overly involved unless someone raises a complaint. Also how can they be expected to effectively mod a subject they do not understand.

Fair enough. Although my point was more about Sparks deleting Colonel Sanders post because he was leaving when we have examples of these posts on this and other forums on boards than anything to do with Urban Sea leaving.

This was more an attempt to remove fuel from the fire that was burning than anything else. :)

Sparks what are you doing here? Are you a new mod in the racing forum?

Category mod for the sports forum. We get asked to look in for a pair of fresh eyes.
Frankly, my eyes are not thanking me for some of what they've had to look at in here.
You guys do not make a good first impression. At all.

So you have looked at a few OTT posts and tarred everyone in here with the same brush. The vast majority of posters in this forum are respectful and post within the set down rules.

In fairness you are stirring it more than being helpful.

We have lost some of the best most respectful and knowledgeable posters over the last week. Urban/Aidan to name but two. These are the guys that brought most people to the forum with their brilliant knowledge and insight.

If we loose any more people to bans or walk offs this forum will be beyond repair and will descend into some of the mindless stuff we have seen in the tips thread.

Please try and be constructive and help to SAVE this forum because its on the point of collapse.

No. Just those who've made those OTT posts.

Actually whats the policy for reporting suspected banned users reregs? I reported a user a few months ago whos post matched a notorious trouble maker on this forum. I was then told by a mod in a PM that they had no proof so couldn't actually deal with it.

Colonel Sanders gave his reasons for leaving. I personally think his post should have stayed up. Also, I see The Curragh advertising their Irish Derby meeting in the horse racing forum. There won't be much point in them continuing their advertising account with Boards if there's nobody posting anymore. Presumably their advertising revenue offsets the hosting bill?

And then the mods and c-mods (who know nothing about horse racing) wonder why there's so much hostility towards them on this forum

Has it occurred to you that it's not a good sign if someone comes to the forum for the first time and gets a negative impression because of the posts of five or six posters?

Have you read any of the other threads on this forum such as the Ascot day 4 thread?

Has it occurred to you that it's not a good sign if a relative stranger comes into a forum for the first time and makes a sweeping condescending statement in the style of a strict headmaster?

Anyways, I'm gonna stop now before I get a ban.

It's occurred to me that it's a tremendously bad sign that it was necessary.
If it was just me, you might have had a point; but so far, it's the regular mod, several category mods and an admin, all of whom have been looking after lots of forums for lots of years without having to do this kind of thing very often, if at all.

At some stage, you're going to have to ask if maybe the problem might be those five or six posters. This'd go a lot faster if for the sake of argument, in private, you just -- purely for fits and giggles -- took a look at the forum from that viewpoint to see what we're saying. You don't have to agree, you don't have to post about it. Just look.

Right, it's clear playing Mr. Nice Guy is getting nowhere, so if you want to play hardball, I can play hardball.

I asked mods and cmods to hold back and tread softly for a while until we get things sorted, that request is no longer valid. If you think bans and cards were handed out liberally, you ain't seen nothing yet.

If your acting the dick, you'll be treated like a dick. If you are slating other users, mods, cmods or admins, your shelflife on this forum will be limited. If mdwexford and his cronies don't like the way we run things here, perhaps Boards.ie isn't for you. I hear there is a poker forum somewhere only too willing to facilitate your posting style.

Rest assured, it's zero tolerance policy from here on in.

You're either with us or against us, there is no more middle ground.

Ya see, these are the sort of posts that will antagonise people, whether intentional or otherwise. A Feedback thread was opened. People gave their views. If you don't want to listen to people's views, then perhaps a Feedback thread shouldn't have been opened in the first place?

Tom asked for the feedback to be civil and constructive, do you think the posters were banned for posting in that way?

The reply from tom and sparks are not just out of think air, they are driven by the previous posts that are not civil.

I wouldn't say they weren't civil. I'd say it was robust debate. We're all adults, and people don't like being talked down to. I saw one or two dissenting posts which didn't seem to contravene any rules, yet they were immediately removed. As I said, perhaps there isn't much point to a Feedback thread if the mods don't particularly like the sort of feedback that's being fed back to them?

I'm being distracted from the racing. Back to the getting-out stakes at Royal Ascot.

Then converse like a grown up instead of saying
    "this place is ****e"
" convert doesnt understand us cos she's a woman"
    "beastys a prick"

Ok, what are the problems in the forum?

    From Mods perspective:
    • Adult style posting where 13 yo kids are supposed to be able to look at.
    • People posting the wrong thing in the wrong forum/thread at the wrong time
    • (I don't know what else, you tell us)

From various users to varying degrees perspective:
    • Mods interpreting the requirements of the users incorrectly
    • Mods handing out bans and infractions liberally
    • Valued users leaving the forum due
    • "Tips" thread moderation
    • The way that cmods or admins or whatever came in over the top of the forums best mod

Someone fill in the gaps cause the thread is going around in circles of people blaming each other.

If your going to paraphrase, make it clear. "beastys a prick" is a misquote. I just searched the thread for the work "prick" and your post is the only one that was returned. That's not a euphamism.

I agree, posts like that should be removed (if they were put up in the first place), but I've seen innocuous posts that have been removed for no reason at all, other than they didn't tally with the mods' way of thinking.
