Something on boards precludes me from posting in the Liverpool Gossip thread so there is a facility to restrict posters.

You need to request access to the soccer forum until you do you wont be able to post on any thread.

Access is open to everyone for the duration of the world cup, but once its over you'll need to request access.

The off topic thread debacle was a complete joke.
Don't know how Beasty is a cmod they way he went on in that thread, as if he is the almighty power who says what can and can't be talked about in an off topic thread!!!! There should be an apology and cards rescinded to whoever got in trouble in that thread over his heavy handed madness.

I couldn't care less about the tips thread but obviously discussion should be allowed about tips. This is just common sense and makes for a better thread.

After timing happens on every horse/betting forum, again it doesn't majorly bother me and I don't see why some people get so worked up about it. If people want to lie about what bets they won then they are just saddos.

Agree with Droidman re convert. Think she goes in itching to hand out cards at times and needs to look at things more objectively and in context. Also agree about the sexist thing, if she was a male mod things would be different and seems to take it as a personal insult if a mention of anything like that happens. Men comment on woman sometimes, it's the world we live in. What's the harm as long as naked pictures aren't being posted.

Hucklebuck your suggestions are all terrible.
Having to apply for access to the tips thread like soccer would be better than 500 posts.
If a post is stupid or doesn't require more than one word then why should people pussyfoot around. Especially here where at certain times of the year there is a lot of nonsense posted.

Do we really want to go the way of the Soccer Forum in terms of access? Seriously?

No I think it would be nonsense, not quite as much nonsense as needing 500 posts to post in a thread though.

That has to be one of the most bitter, angry and mysoginistic posts I have had to endure in a long time.

Consider yourself on a final warning. Given your very long list of infractions and bans, any more vitriol like this from you and it's a site ban.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,297 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

    Which part?

Why would I be bitter and angry, I couldn't be less so.
I thought this was a thread to discuss the issues in the forum, why are you threatening me with site bans.

The convert part is all you could have issue with and other people posted that first so I don't see how you can react like that to my post.

    Genuinely shocked at your post.

MDwexfords points are valid IMO. A feedback thread has been opened and he is being threatened with a ban for his feedback. The general consensus amongst regulars is that the modding of the forum is an issue.

In my eyes you just proved his point with that reply.

this thread might as well be closed now, because people wont post in it for fear of a warning or ban:confused: mdwexford didn't abuse anyone and I certainly seen no vitriol.anyway I give up, I don't think anything is going to change, which is a real pity.

    CategoryMod Note:
I've had to mod a lot of contentious forums directly and catmod even more, and in the course of that I have seen some truly ludicrous stuff spouted by some truly un-self-aware people, but the level of dross in here takes the cake. I'll leave it to Tom to decide on final actions, but I'm closing this thread until he gets here in the interests of cutting down on nonsense.

Bluntly, if you can't see the problem with what mdwexford posted, it's because you're part of the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

Right, it's clear playing Mr. Nice Guy is getting nowhere, so if you want to play hardball, I can play hardball.

I asked mods and cmods to hold back and tread softly for a while until we get things sorted, that request is no longer valid. If you think bans and cards were handed out liberally, you ain't seen nothing yet.

If your acting the dick, you'll be treated like a dick. If you are slating other users, mods, cmods or admins, your shelflife on this forum will be limited. If mdwexford and his cronies don't like the way we run things here, perhaps Boards.ie isn't for you. I hear there is a poker forum somewhere only too willing to facilitate your posting style.

Rest assured, it's zero tolerance policy from here on in.

You're either with us or against us, there is no more middle ground.

FFS lads, there is an opportunity here to put out the issues we all had here on the table, and im certain a lot of us had the same concerns. It could clear up the place big time.
Regarding MD's post, well.... there's a way of saying things and then there's a way of saying things, and if you cant see what was wrong with his angle, then i dont know what to say.

@convert - My original point is still unanswered, we'd all like the forum Mod(s) to contribute to the forum, its non-existant at the moment and i think it a valid concern amongst everyone.
Every other forum i can see, the mods are involved. I dont think its good to have a mod that is just a watcher a such..

Maybe there's no rule for it on boards, but its something that should be looked at.

Don't worry, Slattsy, we have not overlooked this. It is something we are aware of and something we are currently working on. I think right now we have a few more pressing matters to tend to.

As a side note, when we are choosing new moderators, one of the first things we look at is the person's contribution to the forum, so this will feature prominently when (not if) we assign a new moderator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,351 ✭✭✭✭Harry Angstrom

Right, I don't necessarily want to get involved in this because life is too short and the weather is too nice, and I spent enough time arguing my case last week; but I have noticed that two recent posts to this thread have been deleted for no apparent reason - one from Colonel Sanders and the other from Aidankkk. What's the point of having a feedback thread if posts are going to be deleted? I didn't see anything wrong with their posts. They stated an opinion which wasn't offensive, inflammatory etc; so why should their posts be removed?

Jesus, slattsy's making sense. Never thought that would happen. Lol. Time to close the thread I think

    Slattsy for cmod!

why should their posts be removed?
Because if someone wants to leave the forum, just leave. If someone wants to flounce out with a dramatic exit, let them go pay the hosting bill for the site.

    Seriously?
How many more bans need to be issued for people to come to terms with the notion that the site rule of "don't be a dick" isn't some silly joke? The T&Cs for this site mean that the youngest people who should be reading all this are 13-year-olds. Half the stuff in here of late, if a parent caught some random adult stranger showing to their 13-year-old, they'd call the Gardai on them for it. That's not on.
For feck's sakes, if you want a rowdy bit of banter, go to the pub with your mates. When you post here it's not just to you and two or three others, it's to the entire world.

Can we not come to a agreement for who should be a mod in this forum, surely it should be people who regularly contribute and understand the whole forum.
I think the users haven't appreciated some of the condescending posts of some of the mods and have only made things worse.
I haven't had any problems but after reading so much of what's been going on It is really annoying me what's happening and it's only going to turn others off this forum, just like me.
Let the users choose the mod and it will work better.

As a relative new comer round here I would just like to echo these sentiments...

I wasn't really interested/affected by some of the recent "shenanigans" but there does seem to be a massive disconnect in terms of understanding and this thread seems to only have served to fan the flames thus far - some of the recent posts from mods do read as at least a tad condescending and inflammatory to me.

I just think it's a real shame because when I first started reading/posting here it was a forum full of very knowledgeable posters who clearly had a lot to contribute to the discussion and there are relatively few decent horse racing forums out there. But things seem to be falling apart all over the place here at the moment. Hopefully these issues can be resolved it can all get back on track ASAP.

To be brutally honest (I'm doing a lot that today :)), holding a popularity contest for a mod is just not workable.

A mod needs to be a good contributor, have a level head and not have a load of bans and infractions. Whether we like it or not, mods are held to a higher standard than regular posters and as such, certain attributes are critical.

Choosing a mod based on their funny contributions to how popular they are on a forum is not the way to do it.

I don't know how you go about picking a mod but I personally think rossom would be perfect for it.

    Ok, fair point.

Let's all calm things down for a while, I would like to clarify a few points.

We - mods/cmods/admins have the best of intentions at heart. We want to fix this forum, no debate there. Yes, things have gotten a little out of hand, but I hope we can work on this.

Actions speak louder than words - I took your feedback on board aboard about the World Cup and came to an amicable solution with between the mods and the users and started the sticky. I really, genuinely hope that you take me at my word that I am trying to fix the forum. I am willing to listen, I am willing to take on board criticisms of the forum, however I draw the line at criticising people (be it other users or mods/cmods).

If we can all agree to stop commenting on moderation and start commenting on the forum, we can work to sort out this mess.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Colonel Saunders leaving the forum is big news to anyone with an interest in racing - one of the best and most knowledgeable posters we have ever had. To delete his last message (saying he was packing it in) is real old-fashioned Soviet-era writing somebody out of history. Maybe people will think he is just gone on "holidays" and he will be slowly forgotten over time!

A mod that has an interest in the forum(as in horseracing) would sort everything out. I have been told by a mod in private mail that they are not required to post, only apply site rules.

We have lost so many great posters here because of bad attitudes of mods, again by private mail a mod has said to me that good posters tend to leave because of the behaviour of bad posters. Bad posters tend to leave because they are seen through and don't like it when they get called out for their behaviour.

This type of mindset is the root of all evil around here.

I'm not sure how this type of comment helps the feedback thread.

Colonel was an excellent contributor and I'd prefer to know he has closed his account rather than be left to assume he has just vanished.

Your comment comes across as very confrontational to me.

Incorrect - a forum is only as worthwhile as the people who contribute to it. Losing The Colonel is a very major loss and (by an unbiased opinion) constitutes BIG NEWS.
