Unfortunately, despite us being in the CL next year, we are still not able to compete with utd financially. We are no paupers by any stretch, but given the choice, even given the European situation next season, most top players would choose utd over us, even if the same wages were on offer. If we can push on and secure CL for the next couple of years as well as competing well for trophies that may change though.

Anyone who thinks utd will struggle to attract players this summer are in for a rude awakening I think.

Add to that the addition of Louis Van Gaal.

David Moyes was always going to struggle to attract players based on reputation.

    So what should we do?

    1) Do we stick with Brad Jones?

    2) Go with a has-been like Shay Given (as we nearly did last summer) on a free?

    3) Go for a young keeper like McCarthy at Reading?

    4) Go for an experienced goalkeeper on not-too-high wages who will come here as a No. 2, could be relied upon to fill in for an extended period where necessary and might even push Mignolet for his place

Only options 1 and 2 will be inexpensive

Options 3 and 4 will be costlier, but it's like an insurance policy. Hopefully the keeper will only have to play cup games, but you'd never know how much we might need him.

    6) Keep Reina

    What's wrong with that one?

If we're going to be not sign our top CM target because he's consider £5m more expensive than I think following that up by spending £5m on a back-up keeper is stupid. I'd much rather have our top CM and a free agent like Given for next season than our 3rd-4th rated CM and a good back-up keeper.

Wouldn't say it's that clear cut tbh. Mignolet has had his ups and downs last season, and Vorm was arguably the best keeper in the league under Rodgers.

    I think it is.

Wages, why keep a player earning 80k a week on the bench week in week out
    Reina wants first team football.
    He's already written his goodbye.
Keeping Reina would cost us too:
    - his higher wages
    - the transfer fee we will forego by not selling him.

Cheaper to sign Vorm, I'd venture

    Humongous wages.

Not representative of any kind of value

Spending £5m on Vorm and giving him about £50k a week will probably be similiar to getting rid of Reina in terms of wages and transfer cost.

Reina does not want to be at Liverpool, he burned his bridges last year by whoring himself out to Barca. A great keeper for us but his last 2 years and his behaviour last summer have tarnished his reputation.

If Vorm is available for cheapish it's a no brainer.

Brad Jones is a shocking backup.

And lets face it, Mig needs a decent backup.

It was a big criticism I had a few years ago There was nobody to step in if Reina was playing poorly.

Uruguay are playing Norn Iron on Friday (BBC1 NI/BBC2 NI red button) but I guess it's of little interest other than seeing if Coates gets a game.

Who's to say Vorm will be backup?

Yep. I'd have Mignolet as back up to Vorm!

If they are similar in cost, are they not just as stupid as each other then?

I doubt Reina would see himself as a backup keeper.

Well Reina is better than Vorm, so keeping Reina makes more sense. I don't think doing either is particularly smart though. Signing Vorm is worse though.

Reina will not play another game for LFC.

Some of the more reputable rumours (from the Echo/Times) seem to be Premier League-based players. I wonder if Rodgers is throwing his weight around. After the season he's had and his contract situation he'd be in the driving seat. I wouldn't blame him, if the transfer committee were responsible for Aspas and Alberto. That said, I don't want another misstep along the lines of his first window. Vorm and Lallana isn't exactly how I'd spend £25m.

Also, Leverkusen have stated we have not bid for Can. If we're interested in him at all, that's unbelievable given it was reported a week ago that we were looking at him. If the last few windows have lessons to teach it's that approaching the player first and dallying when speaking to the club is the wrong way of going about it. You look at Leverkusen going after Immobile and they appear to be doing everything right.

I'm guessing you don't feel the same about Suarez? :D

We all saw the benefit Man City got last year by having a strong #2 to Hart. When Hart had a dip in form the strong #2 stepped in and the team carried on. If Mig had a serious drop in form or got an injury I'd hate to see how deep we'd end up defending with Jones in goal  I reckon the back four would be on the goal line!!!

We either need a strong experienced #2 who is past his best but capable of stepping in for a few games and will keep Mig under pressure or a young up and coming guy who will push Mig all the way. Both are win win situations. It will come down to what the transfer priorities are Vs budget. If getting a strong #2 isn't a top priority it would make sense to get in an experienced guy like Given on a two year contract and then nect year or the following year invest in a strong competitor to Mig.

    Kroos + Pedro > Milner + Lallana

According to today's Anfield Wrap, we haven't had a substitute score a winning goal since Joe Cole in 2011.

Not sure how I feel about Vorm for 5m, really.

Why? A good back up keeper that can be relied upon and can push Mignolet. What good keeper can you get for less than 5m at the moment?

Victor Valdes is available on a free and is about the same level as Vorm.

I'd argue he's shown far more in his career than Vorm has.

He's also not leaving Barca just so he can be backup to someone else.

Although I'd be surprised if Vorm fancies doing that either.

Haha seriously?!! Valdes is a superb keeper and is better than mignolet and vorm by a substantial margin. He'll be following the dolla dolla signs to France anyway.

He isn't a superb keeper. He has been shown time and time again to be average playing behind an incredible Barcelona team.
