If anyone is using this with the Zyxel P660 router could you let me know how you got it to work. Having zero luck here.

You most likely need to change the channel the router broadcasts on, chromecasts seem to only able to see channels 1-10.

Tried that. Went to Network > Wireless (LAN) > Channel Selection

And then I tried every channel but to no avail.

Seems your not the only one to have a problem with that router. Time to get it replaced I think.

Yep, I had one of them routers from Eircom and Chromecast wouldn't work. I phoned them up, explained the story and they sent out a new router, no questions.

Pardon my ignorance, but what other benefits have this got, as i'm used to playing files off a memory stick on the mediaplayer on my Samsung TV.
I've also got wifi on my bluray player, could i use that as an advantage?

Could the chromecast be handy for streaming football?

    Thanks.

I also had the same problems with my older Zyxel P660 router but got the newer d1000 router sent out by Eircom and Chromecast has worked perfectly since

It doesn't work with that router from what I can see - I got one at Xmas for my mate and he had to wait for his Fibre install when he got his new router for it to work....

My Zyxel P660 Eircom lumbered me with works fine with the Chromecasts (both US ones bought on ebay) I have, with no settings or anything else changed from default. I Must have got lucky somehow or another.

Despite being a supposed standard lots of miracast senders and receivers won't actually work together. Plus you'll get that same thing from china for €18 and probably have it in the same time.

Doesn't Mac Airplay do exactly the same to my apple tv and wd tv live? Not sure if it makes sense to get a chromecast.

It's different in that the chromecast only receives a 'command' from your android device and then it goes and fetches the media itself. You can turn off your android device and the chromecast will continue to stream the media. You cannot do this with Airplay.

Oh, that's really cool. Will consider the purchase then.
I have an intelligent HDMI splitter that automatically switches between blue-ray player, Sky HD Box, WD TV Live and Apple TV and I've put a delay on my Harmony 1100 remote so that it switches automatically to the correct HDMI port so I suppose Chromecast will do the same?
If not I can switch manually as well.

    You, sir, are correct.

Chromecast is a digital media player developed by Google. The device, a 2.83-inch (72 mm) HDMI dongle, plays audio/video content on a high-definition television by directly streaming it via Wi-Fi from the Internet or a local network. Users select the media to play using Chromecast-enabled mobile apps and Web apps, or through a beta feature called "tab casting" that can mirror most content from the Google Chrome web browser running on their personal computer. The device was announced on July 24, 2013, and made available for purchase on the same day in the United States for US$35, along with a limited-time promotion for three free months of Netflix. The Google Cast SDK was released on February 3, 2014, allowing third parties to modify their software to support Chromecast.

    So wireless hdmi?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,380 ✭✭✭✭Banjo String

    Xbmc compatible?

On that note, with all the various Android tv boxes available, is it possible to make your phone an Android tv box?

Bit of a noob question but I have been wondering this for ages.

You could look at it that way, but it's too much of a generalisation imho. There are true wireless hdmi solutions out there, but they are very expensive.

So this is a cheaper option. Are you saying it is not true hdmi? My knowledge of hdmi goes as far as cables and ports.

Don't get hung up on the HDMI part. Take a few minutes to learn what chromecast does:
