Chrome doesn't cast so I may have assume everything else dudn't as well.

Youtube and netflix work which is great.

Fair enough but it would be nice to be able to cast everything from the nexus.

MHl cables are cheap , about a fiver at most

how is that in any way any kind of a point?

if only you owned some kind of electronic device to allow you to search for these things yourself.

Thats why people recommend to build a media server, or a cheap desktop tower for plex, as its a lot less power hungry and a simpler setup for plex.

The point was by using the Chromecast you won't need to pay for a cable. Mhl cables can be device specific. The one that works with my G2 was 16 euro when I bought it last year.

I have a half decent laptop at the moment, and it's main function is just to stream or play movies to the tv via HDMI as it is. Most web browsing is via the various work laptops or tablets. Anyway, I picked a chromecast up today and the plan is to use this laptop as the media server so I'll see how that goes. I did think of getting a dedicated media server but at the moment it's not used enough to justify the expense. (Well I could justify it as it's another gadget, but my wife will kill me.)

Got a chromecast and to be honest i didnt think it was anything great.
Currently have both a Hacked ATV2 and a WDTV Live player which when set up properly are very hard to compete against.

However for anyone looking to stream local files on a PC or laptop use a chrome Broweser extension called Videostream and it will play directly to the Chromcast from the Browser.
Plex was very shuddery

Plex works amazingly well with the Now TV box which will cost you about €15 via Parcel Motel from here

I also have the Playto app on my phone and tablet and can watch stuff on the Now TV box from my NAS, Laptop, or even a hard drive connected to my Vodafone router. Playto also has Filmon baked in so its great for watching BBC and the UK channels on a spare TV that has no satellite connection.

Chromecast is pretty cool but the Now TV box and a bit of set up will get you a lot of the same functionality.

A lot of people are going to be disappointed. I got 3 chromecasts earlier in the year, for myself and family, after an initial love affair they are all completely unused. Nowtv box does almost everything we want better, has a natty remote that gets flung around the place by the kids and doesn't need to be unlocked/charged/started up all the time. Anything the now tv box doesn't do is done far better by xmbc, or a tablet/phone with miracast/hdmi/mhl.

Chromecast is an investment in googles walled garden like unhackable apple tv locks you into apples. Even rooted like mine noones done much useful in developing for them.

I got my Chromecast for £25.

Great little device.

Comes into its own when a few people are around. They can cast content to the TV with the click of a button.

For info, MHL cables are not "device specific" other than to the extent that they will only work with phones that support MHL - a video standard.

The G2 (and nexus maybe?) support Slimport - a different standard, that's why your cable was different.

Is the article below incorrect then, says there are 4 types of mhl cables. You might well be right, but reading the link below suggests otherwise. I might be misreading it maybe.

You could be right Dozen, I'm no expert but it does look like there is a new variety of mhl. But slimport is a different animal.

I bought the chromecast for the craic really and just assumed there wouldn't be any problem like this. I have sky etc so don't get anywhere near the use to go investing in a media server etc and anyway there is no need for plex if you use a media player.

If I knew plex would be troublesome I may have spend the extra money and just got a WDTV live media player which will stream files from my old laptop no problem as there is no transcoding. That said the chromecast is a cool device so I don't mind having one anyway.
