Sleep

    Anyone got some tips for the best quality sleep? Anything at all would be appreciated. I know stuff like exercise but what kind of exercise works best for you etc? Many thanks.

    I feel like I've been in a deep sleep for 10+ hours after a 7 hour sleep, I wake up wide awake, refreshed and relaxed. If I don't take it for a couple days I have **** sleeps and wake up late and lethargic.

    After hearing that poster's advice I'm getting mine from Holland & Barrett, wouldn't buy off an unknown website.

    Sorry, I wasn't necessarily talking about that site. People can make up their own minds as to where to buy. I was talking about the original poster's advice btw.

    Magnesium definitely gives you deeper sleeps and makes you feel tired a bit earlier. Sometimes it's devastating when you wake up and realise that your super vivid dreams weren't actually real! Other things I'v learned.

    - Camomile/Tulsi tea help you unwind before bed.

    - Make your room totally pitch black or wear a sleeping mask. Stop using laptops/phones with artificial light an hour or so before bed as apparently they trick your body into thinking it's still daytime.

    - Don't have any caffeine after 3pm or so.

    - Have your carbs towards the end of the day.

    I work irregular hours and I think this is the biggest killer as it's really hard to get into a normal sleeping pattern. I end up having naps constantly and then not being tired at night.

    A day. Guess that may have been an out of turn reply based on this but still..if nothing substantial after a day I'd at least expect to see some sign..anything..that the Magnesium had some effect in terms of sleepiness, calm etc. Absolutely nothing.

    It took 3-4 days for me to notice a difference when taking it. Make sure to take it on an empty stomach around 30-60 minutes before going to bed, and use it for a week or so before coming to a conclusion.

    Really? To notice any difference at all? Sorry, this is pure frustration, this thing is ruining my life.

    Hmmm. I take a different supplement, admittedly—ZMA, which is just magnesium with zinc and vitamin B6—so perhaps the directions for use are different. With ZMA, 3 capsules in one go, which delivers 450mg of magnesium (as well as zinc etc.), is the recommended dosage, and the 3 capsules are to be taken 40-60 minutes before sleep on an empty stomach. Maybe someone who takes magnesium by itself can chime in. In any case, it's not a magic pill and if your sleep problems are great it might be useless.

    Yeah I may be expecting too much; it's all too easy to cling onto new 'solutions' when you're been in a rut for quite a while.

    H+B is only 100 mg, i take 450 myself and i find it great

    My fault. I never stated how much to take. Around 400-500mg a little while before bed. 100mg is not enough. I take a zinc tablet with it. There's some reason for taking them both together but I can't remember what it is now. Don't take them with calcium or dairy as this reduces the absorption. Try taking the tablet every night for a week and I bet you'll notice the difference. It's hardly a big ask to take one little tablet a night.

    What type did you try? And did you take a decent amount?

    I use viridians "magnesium taurate".

    ZMA isn't a brand, it's a supplement containing zinc, magnesium and vitamin b6. One company does have the ZMA name trademarked though.
