Any idea what your temps were, did you have an overclock applied?

Graphics card drivers usually crash, sounds like a problem with the overclock on the CPU or some setting in the bios isn't correct which is causing it to restart when the processor gets a little hot

Asus 290 topped out at 82, which shouldn't be a problem. fx6300 never went over 46. I had the cpu at 3.8Ghz but put it back to stock to see if that was problematic. Only had 1 freeze since. It's not so much a crash as the whole system freezes and forces me to reset it.

I cleared drivers and re-installed this morning, and had no crashes since. But that was also after I sorted out fan speed not changing, so I'm not sure. Only been playing Minecraft since.

Any overclock applied to the GPU? If your using something like MSI afterburner the fans should be on auto. Test the GPU as well with furmark

You don't need to stress your CPU out for 24 hours using Prime.

    2 hours would be sufficient.

Please, please, no-one listen to this.

The worlds #1 Overclocker doesn't even recommend stress testing in general. If you have no issues with general use then you're good. Prime95/IBT put unrealistic stress that day to day use wouldnt amount to anyway.

    Any reason?

2 hours is perfectly fine. I've overclocked plenty of PC's and no one has ever reported an issue and temps were safe with prime

24 hours is way excessive. What happens if it fails or temps are too high after 13 hours? Do you lower the overclock?

Unless you are using things that stress the Processor at 100% for long periods of time like video encoding then yea, run prime for longer.

If your are not using the processor for things that stress the CPU 100% then 2 hours is a perfect time period.

The whole point of testing is that you don't test normal cases. You test the outliers and extremes of ranges. I've had problems with BSODs in the past because my "stable" overclock was "only" tested for about twelve hours in Prime, and I assumed that would be enough. Seventeen hours in, and it fails.

You can run with whatever you want obviously, but I personally prefer to be sure something is stable so I don't have to worry about it.

Yeah but he doesn't need the system to be prime stable if he is running benches.
I can run my cpu at 5ghz while benching but i guarantee if will give me random crashes while doing day to day stuff and most certainly crash on bf4.

Everyone has there own opinion on how much time and effort they spend testing there oc's so each to there own.

Nope, only the factory oc of 1000mhz

Edit: Let furmark run for 30 minutes and it ran fine with no crashes. I guess it was a driver issue. 90 degrees though.. holy..

I've been a bit lax with my own testing in the past for stability but I would certainly not tell anyone to do the same or pass on a system that I didn't know was perfectly stable.
You could end up with corrupted files and corrupted OS.

On another note, has anyone used any of ASRock's BTC boards? I'm thinking they'd make awesome server boards with a bunch of PCIE->SATA adapters, or NICs.

I just ordered one for mining machine. Will be setting this up in two weeks. Will let you know.

So I realised my graphics card wasn't changing fan speeds, which I've resolved. Was that the cause of my crashes?

My 290 doesn't change fan speeds either, I have to manually adjust it before I play games otherwise it crashes after anything from 10-30 minutes.

Does anybody roughly know when Nvidia is releasing their Geforce 800 series with the Maxwell architecture?

Does anybody roughly know when Nvidia is releasing their Geforce 800 series with the Maxwell architecture?

Supposedly in second half of 2014.
    http://wccftech.com/nvidia-maxwell-geforce-gtx-750-ti-gtx-750-official-specifications-confirmed-60watt-gpu-geforce-800-series-arrives-2014/#ixzz2tKy20yWr

NVIDIA GeForce 800 Series in Second Half of 2014
NVIDIA also confirmed during the conference that they are planning to introduce the GeForce 800 series which is fully based on the Maxwell architecture in second half of 2014. This means that we will see the proper high-performance GPUs such as the replacements for GeForce GTX 780, GeForce GTX 770 and GeForce GTX 760 in Q3 2014. We have already noted codenames of the high-end Maxwell chips which include GM200, GM204 and GM206, however NVIDIA didn’t mention what process they would be based on but early reports point out to 20nm.
The initial Maxwell lineup consists of two cores which include GM107 for the GeForce 750 series and the GM108 for entry level GeForce 800M SKUs such as the GeForce GT 840M.

Look at the box in the pic. Happened before with me, they cancelled the order, which they are well entitled to do as they dont charge your card until shipping.

Worth a punt maybe, but you are tying up funds for up to 2 months, plus the time potentially to return it an refund if it turns out to be a VTX 280

They'll probably cancel, as they had a mix up last week with an ssd, so you probably would never get the item.

I was really expecting some gta v news for the pc by now. Even hoping it would be out

Maybe they are doing a next gen update for ps4, xb1 and pc? Upgraded textures, lighting and what not.

Hopefully it's worth the wait. My housemate has it there for xbox and I've put off playing it (apart from a couple of hours) until it get's a pc release.

Is it even profitable? We don't exactly have the cheapest energy rates in Ireland. Even if you had nightsaver and only used it during that it still works out as barely worth your time.

From my calculations using a pair of 290's it would take about 80 days to mine the equivalent of 1 bitcoin running it only during night saver and you would only make €120 profit at current values.

In that sense I guess it's worth doing but it doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle especially with how volatile the value of all these currencies are.

Is the plan to hold onto the lower value currency like dogecoin to trade at a later date in the hope the value goes up?

Also why are AMD cards so much better for mining than Nvidia?

The real secret to making money at this it seems is having some asic monster running in a country with dirt cheap energy rates. You gotta spend big to make big.

It's a pain in the arse... I've been trying to sell a 7950 and I think people assume it has been previously used for mining. :(

You'll find all answers here, it's a short FAQ, but definitely the best I can find.

There's a bit of misconception when people mentions GPU and bitcoin in a same sentence. What they probably mean is one of altcoins that are actually mined with GPUs, I think Litecoin does not work with ASIC, which makes it more preferable for people who wants to make some beer money using their GPU (AMD in this case), some people also uses their work computers and electricity to mine coins.
Then there's solo and pool mining... but not explained well in that link. You should not go solo unless you have killer hardware afaik... pool is just bunch of people with budget systems mining together and sharing profits, essentially making one large supercomputer.
    Something along those lines...
