Might be worth waiting to see what Maxwell brings to the table but it wouldn't bother me.

I think the most reasonable guess is that Maxwell will bring some modest performance gains (maybe 15% or so), but slash power/heat. Then over the next few iterations they'll use that power/heat overhead to ramp up performance.

(they'll probably overclock really well though)

    It's depressing watching price of graphics cards rising the last few days;
Pixmania has raised the price of the Sapphire R9 290 by €30 to €450 and
HWVS has raised the price of the Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X by €15 to €430. :(

Skyrim at 1440p modded, with a 1gb 7770. I never thought 1fps was truly achievable.

The PCIe power cables probably won't make a difference, just read it somewhere last night looking up crossfire issues, might be worth checking.

Tried changing around power cables, no joy. Tried a different combination of the 3x Pci-E connectors and a combination of the molex and Pci-E same results.

So just now I disabled crossfire to test out the HIS....

Stock clocks + Auto Fan results in a Furmark crash after ~1min @55°;C
Stock clocks + 100% Fan and it seems fine for 5 mins, temp only gets to about 46°C.

I had a quick look at some logs and it's obvious now that the HIS cannot go over 53°C. I would have thought it should be able to take more heat than that.

    What about the other temps?

You should download something like hwinfo that will give you a full read out of any sensors in your pc.

Which temps in particular? I get 2 VRM readings from card 0 (the HIS) and they are a static 23.0°C. They don't seem to be reading correctly.

Apart from that I believe all other temps are fine.

    Thanks.

That can't be right, it was regularly around 75C during gaming in my rig.

What would cause such a big difference in ability from one rig to another?

So I just finished de-lidding my 3570K. Don't have any pictures I'm afraid, but for reasons below, I'll be opening it back up at the weekend.

Long story short, temperatures are worse. Not a lot worse (around 10° at worst) but enough that I want to take another look. I didn't clean all the glue off the PCB, which, from looking around, seems to be one of the causes of bad temperatures. I also had only very quickly cleaned the top of the IHS.

I couldn't be as thorough as I wanted with it because I didn't want to drain my loop, so there was a lot of wrangling and moving, etc. I'll be draining my loop and doing the thing properly at the weekend, hopefully. Will get pictures and post back then.

Thats the reason right there as the paste they use is not actually bad.The stupid adhesive they use is the cause of the problem.I cleaned my off with a plastic card and got it all off bar what looked like a stain from the adhesive.

Did you use normal thermal paste or clu/clp?
Normal paste seems to not work to well and temps creep back up after a while.

I've some clp somewhere you can use if you want.

Glad to hear that. I've got CLU. Should still be enough left for a second run, from the looks of things. Thanks though.

I used very little at all so you should have loads left.I found the little brush that came with it very good to use.Did you cover the little caps with anything?

I used quite a bit... figuring it was going directly on the die and not wanting to leave any exposed spots, etc. Will try less this time. Had trouble getting the glue off the PCB. Was worried about scratching it.

Don't have any caps either. Ivy. ;)

Did you use razor or vice method ?

I'm tempted to do mine but dreading those caps by the die :(

Yeah sorry a homer moment regarding the caps.
I used about 1/3 of a grain of rice and just kept working it with the brush until it was an even coat.If you use something like a credit card you wont scratch the pcb.
I added a pic of when it was dellided and one of how clean i got it.

I used vice method and had to give it a right few wacks
I covered the caps with mx4 (non conductive) so as not to get any CLP on them and fry the cpu.

Nice job! My IHS is quite similar to how yours ended up, my PCB not so much.

I used the vice method as well. Took a few whacks, and quite a bit more force than I initially thought. The whole thing flew out of the vice a few times, and I was reasonably sure it wasn't going to be in working order after that, but it's a tough little ****er.

How long of an Intel burn test would be sufficient to know my overclock is stable? Honestly don't understand oc'ing at all.. Went to 4 on my fx6300 at stock and it's running cool on a stress test so far?

An hour on Maximum is usually best, as long as a 24 hour run with Prime95.

Gave me an error message at 15 minutes. I'll stay at 3.8, not like I even care.

Ok so I was updating my Windows Score out of boredom, and the screen started flickering like crazy, which it said it should. But now when I try to watch a movie it starts flickering like crazy. What's up? It's at 110hz

    Only in Windows Media Player...

Lads just curious how much would one get for 2 Gigabyte 670s OC version these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 626 ✭✭✭Seaaan

Posted this on 290 thread but maybe someone else knows..

It crashes after 10-30 mins of gaming and makes em reset pc. What's up?

I ordered this but received a box with no plastic wrapper on the outside, and a hole in the anti static bag..

Anyone know the best place to get some rubber grommets to space the mobo from the case?

Just had a look inside the case and don't like the fact that there is only four standoff brass spacers

Do these work for HDD installs as well?

Any particular size I should be looking for?

I posted this in another thread here in Build n upgrade, but I should have probably put it here instead of another guys thread. So apologies for the repost.
Now that we're on the subject of PSUs, how long do people here use a power supply? I have a Corsair Builder Series V2 600 Watt for three years now and it's just out of warranty. When I upgrade (which will be in the next few months) should I buy a new one, or just stay with what I got until kaput?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

The main driving force for me changing used to be until I need more power for GPU's, saying that the last time I dropped from 1kW to 850W. I usually upgrade well before the warranty is up too. No sense changing your PSU if its working well, unless you go with Xfire or SLI or you start overclockling like a lunatic :) A good quality one with proper over/under voltage and over current protection should last well after the warranty. Saying that if it ever starts causing an unstable system, bin it ASAP.

You don't need to stress your CPU out for 24 hours using Prime.

    2 hours would be sufficient.

So I realised my graphics card wasn't changing fan speeds, which I've resolved. Was that the cause of my crashes?
