It goes without saying the answer of course is no. Like i said i fail to understand peoples participation in such ridiculousness and shame on the irresponsible pleb who came up with the idea.

The irresponsible plebs are those following the lead of whoever came up with it.

Playing games while drinking comes across to me as very juvenile behavior. The Age limit should be raised to 24.

Yes, but some are more stupid than others. I have sympathy for the families in these cases, but there's absolutely no reason to excuse the behaviours that led to these tragedies.

This 'craze' symbolises how stupidity is accepted and encouraged in society these days.. that's the worst tragedy of all.

Only yesterday was looking at a Facebook page , and photo of a row of shots - Green drinks ready for demolition .

Its probably seen as fun and cool thing to do .

When I was mid-twenties , I used to drink Aftershock , and I think it was the only shot available in the pub .

    When I was 16 , used to drink poteen , in a ditch , in hiding .

I think a drink culture has existed in Ireland many many years now .

    Yeah tbf your right.
I just think though that youngsters dont know the full implications of their drinking tbh. They cant see the potential dangers and before they realise it, its gone to the point of no return.

We, the adults are meant to be setting examples to the youth and to be honest in the great scheme of things we are not doing a great job.

It's linked to the game as much as it's linked to the brand of clothes he was wearing or how long since he had his last haircut.

I would plead with contributors to this thread to be a little sensitive to the fact that 2 families are grieving tonight for their loss and their lives will never be the same again.

I would agree myself that participants in drinking games are foolish but to be honest i think they lack the full knowledge that the severe implications of alcohol abuse can bring about. We were all young and foolish once and done dumb things. Sadly some mistakes are more costly than others

Is there any proof that this necnomination or whatever actually caused his death other than a Facebook campaign?

Has there been an inquest or is this trial by social media? Surely someone doesn't down a pint in one and then jump into a river in flood in a storm?

If I was that boy's father I'd be extremely angry at the media circus around my son.

"Celebrity" culture. The tabloids and (crap) TV stations fill up with silly stuff to keep these people famous because it's easier than coming up with decent, original material.

His family themselves were on the news campaigning to have this drinking game banned tonight so that's the only real basis for assumption that this led to his death.

The guys brother put it on Facebook after it happened. He's a friend of a friend (my friend was tagged in it) so it showed up on my time line. Can't see why his brother would make it up

Oh really, I haven't jumped in a river lately.

Where does personal responsibility come into it? Or is it always someone or something else to blame?

I done some crazy **** when I was young. But I didn't down a Litre of spirits in one go, or jump in a river as is suspected in the two cases over the weekend!

    Responsibility!!!!

Maybe they were pushed - or fell in. Who knows. The families have to listen to people posting on FB about how stupid they were with no evidence whatsoever.

You're sure it was his brother? Easy to set up a fake FB account - or hack it. Also, why would you jump in a river after it without other underlying problems?

Edit: it does appear he just jumped in after the pint.

He's dad was on Six One news appealing for people to stop playing the drinking game. How much more evidence do you need?

Yeah i get what you mean and your right at 19 he was an adult but the point im trying to make is that the obsessiveness of some of our people to become intoxicated in as quick a timeframe as possible is leading to participation in these type of drinking game scenarios and the subsequent intoxication is leading to people getting a sense of invincibility and taking these risks. The root of situations like this is our attitude as a nation
toward alcohol abuse. Going forward someone mature and in the know will have to lead by example and akin to the efforts to stop road deaths, we may need to start a similar campaign showing people the realities and risks behind excessive consumption

It'll never happen. The government have too many vested interests with the drinks industry to ever do anything about it. How many of the TDs are also publicans?

Every time someone famous comes to the country we stick a pint in there hands and take a photo!

Apologies it was actually referred to by Frances Fitzgerald who is the minister for children and youth affairs.

To be honest id take most of what the politicians say with a grain of salt especially this current government. Full of hot air and bulls*it

OK just read some more articles, it does appear he did jump in the river straight after the drinking game. That's just crazy.

I think people are over reacting to the neknomination game.
I have not taken part in this, I'm too old and boring these days.

My understanding of the process is to drink a pint of beer in one go in an unusual way or place.
I don't see the harm in that.

If someone makes a mistake and thinks they can down a pint of spirits.....well if you can't figure out that that is a bad idea by yourself then I think it's unlikely anyone giving you good advice would be listened to.

Alcohol kills so many in this country every year, how many people who are shouting down, condemning this drinking game would agree to ban alcohol to save lives in this country?
My guess very few would, the rest are hypocrites.

My respect for anyone that partakes in this shitehawking decreases to 0.

Hey I just necked a 3L bottle of Frosty Jacks and I nominate you to do the same. Post a video as proof.

Some people decide to do something extreme or creative along with it likely in the hope it'll go viral. I'd imagine that's what happened this guy. I find the neknominations annoying but of course people are going overboard with their criticisms of it; the vast majority of neknominations are just people downing a pint before nominating a mate. Not a lot wrong with that even if I wouldn't bother doing it myself. Just don't be an eejit by doing something dangerous

I agree with you 100% and while we can only hope things will change the reality is far from different.
You have a dail bar open til 5am while they were trying to pass the abortion legislation during the summer and in general their only solutions to curb binge drinking are

    a) raise the price per unit of alcohol
    b) set up another 'quango' where they will stuff it with their cronies and pay them and the so called experts excessive money

His brother and dad spoke on the news so perhaps they had knowledge in the aftermath of what occurred. Still i suppose your right in terms of this issue perhaps i should have posted this thread after it was proved in the inquest.

But i just think there is a bigger issue then this one situation. Just Christmas gone we had many participating in this 12 pubs of Christmas 'phenomenon'. Last Monday we had the near miss at Copper Face jacks. This tragedy doesn't stand alone in isolation. Ireland has a drink problem.
