Yeah I had a look at pc fritz but im not sure if its english version.

The product page says mutilanguage but the specs list it as dutch I think. Was unsure about that.

It is only €40 for home premium, thats without delivery though

Yea download the English version and use the german key to activate it
its 40e plus 19e I (think) for shipping
if u can hang on a bit it changes a bit down as far as 19e

Was the seller on adverts no help with the 290x man?
I know you buy at own risk but surely he should have refunded you after such a short time
He is unwilling to give a refund, even though I only used it for 3 hours. Said it was working when he sold it (even though he had the black screen issue at least once and admitted it).
He is dealing with the RMA for me though but it is awkward as it is about 50km drive for me either way to his place so hoping can send it from my house and have it delivered here also.
He said to them he flashed the bios, just hope they will still rma it after saying this.

Surely that voids the warranty? If I remember correctly you also said he had a custom PCB? Both of those are red flags for me..

I personally wouldn't hold much faith in an RMA..

Ah cheers man,so its just download the iso and use the key then?

    @Seaaan
PCFritz were the seller on amazon that were selling copies for that price, seems there not on there anymore.

Truthfully id rather buy it through amazon off them but cant really argue with there prices, even with delivery still save around €25

People these days.....he should be refunding you. Nice that he agreed to RMA himself but after all is said and done i would be leaving negative feedback for him. Thats poor form imo

He said it woundn't affect warranty and the card is still fully in warranty :(. I left good feedback while I was in germany as wouldnt get to try the card until I was home in the new year.
It had a custom cooler on it also which he also said in the ad doesn't void warranty.
Its annoying as I had an issue over christmas with a 7970, a guy got back to me saying it wasn't working. My first reply was sorry about that and you can have a full refund asap (turned out he just did something wrong or something and the card was perfect :) ).

I'd actually give him the benefit of the doubt so far. If it turns out you can't get an RMA, and then he refuses to give you your money back... well...

Ocuk are okish with rma'ing a card if the cooler has been replaced.

I looked at the sellers ad and the quote from him is not correct.Sapphire will not rma a card that has had the cooler "tampered with".If there are no signs of wear and tear on the screws you might get very lucky.
It is my understanding that sapphire honours warranty claims even if you remove the heatsink as long as you put it back on

Hopefully Ocuk will sort it for you.

I had to replace the cooler screws with ones from my sisters card as they where very badly damaged. The thermal pads where also wrecked so had to replace them also with ones from her card.
I have it looking pretty decent now and from the outside it wouldn't look like the card was ever opened.

    Edit:
If they do sort me out with this I know where all my future orders will be from and I order alot of pc gear :P. This is just the worst time for this to happen as with spending tonnes on xmas gifts i'm broke for once :P.

Well, that's standard for all companies bar EVGA. Never had a problem with Gigabyte, MSI, Zotac, or ASUS and that though. :P

In fairness, its Buyers beware. If I would be a seller I would say to feck off too. I sold my gtx 570 and I knew it was in perfect working order, if seller would be back in 24hours and asking for refund I would tell him very very far away.

It sucks, but when you buy stuff like that you HAVE to check everything and then ask yourself - why on earth someone selling highest end card, with barely any millage in. An aftermarket cooler would be a thing alone to make me go away and not buying.

Good plan the will help alot ;)

I'm with the other posters bar shadow that he should refund you if the rma is rejected.

He said afterwards in a text, yea he noticed the black screen issue once and never mentioned it. (This is what led to it finally crapping out) This would be hiding the issue.
He also said he was buying a gtx 780ti to replace it (being a doctor I didn't think much of that as I'm sure their would be no issue to do such things.
It would be very hard to detect the initial issue in testing as took an hour after using before it got warm enough to happen.
From now on though I wont be so trusting with people I deal with on adverts. Most of the time I would just take people on their word and never test, this one I seen running only for a minute or so (my stupidity and silly trusting nature) :(.

As I said, it sucks, And I feel sorry, but it is Buyers Beware with second hand items. similar topic pop up often enough in Motors forums. There is no comeback for buyer.
Then again, I would not touch altered and with custom cooler gpu at all.

I really should just stop buying second hand as I'm too trusting.
I'm sure most I've bought from here I would not has tested anything from any of you :).
I think from now on I wont buy anything from adverts or the likes. Will stick to stores where I have a come back.

There's trusted people there, others not so much. usually around 30-40$, people getting them from high schools/colleges/workplaces

So I set up UPC Horizon at home there a few days ago. What I did not know is that I will no longer have a router but instead everything comes through the one box (TV, Internet, Home Phone, everything). My computer does not have a wifi card in it as I didn't think I'd ever need one. My wifi speeds at the moment are a joke so I need help.

As my computer does not have wifi, what I have done is..
Computer connected via ethernet to wifi extender, which is connected to the Horizon box wirelessly in the next room.

We're supposed to be getting 120Mb connection (We had 60) with this as well, but my download speeds have dropped significantly. I'm downloading a torrent at the moment which is maxing out at 2MB/s when I should be getting closer to 15 MB/s. Before swapping to Horizon I was getting ~7 MB/s which is about right.

Any suggestions of what I can do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I assume you can't run an ethernet cable the whole way? If not, then you're looking at homeplugs. I use them at the moment, but the speeds are far from spectacular. I'm in a room across the hall from where the Horizon box is and I'm getting around 7MB/s. A WiFi card would probably give you better speed (depending on range), you'll sacrifice latency. If you're gaming/streaming/Skyping a lot, homeplugs would be better.

From what i have read the wifi on the horizon boxes is meant to be woeful.I saw they said to a customer they would send them out a router to connect directly to the horizon box to improve the wifi signal.
You could ring them and ask about this.

Get them to send you a separate modem(EPC3925) and disable the internet connection from the Horizon box, its useless.

Ugh, I can use a router? The guy on the phone I was speaking to was an utter twat in that case.

He insisted there was no way I could keep the router as it would no longer work with our new Horizon service, so we sent it back. When I realised I wouldn't have a router I asked him if there was a ethernet connection on the Horizon box. He told me, quite confidently I might add, that there was no ethernet connection that the box will only work via wifi. I assumed he was a fool and quickly looked it up while on the phone to him.

Home plugs came to mind alright but I figured my current setup is pretty similar to home plugs? Would the performance be any better?

I think I have an older UPC router around here somewhere.. I could probably use that. We got rid of it in the first place as the wifi was woeful. I mean it was so bad if you left the room you barely got a signal. With the wifi extender, that shouldn't be a problem..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 878 ✭✭✭Luck100

So the Horizon box has no ethernet ports?

I was thinking about getting Horizon myself but I want to attach my own wifi router. Right now I have the older (100MB) upc service, and I disable the wifi function on their box and attached my own router. Basically the wifi in their box was a joke so even my cheapo wifi N router blows it away.

It does. It's got your standard coax in, 4-port out, USB, optical audio, HDMI, etc. It's also got an internal antenna, with no connections for an external one (hence the crap performance).

Question, as we're on the networking side of things:

    c5twum4l.png

That's a rough layout of my setup at the moment. There are UPC connections at both TVs, Horizon sitting at the one on the right. My PC is upstairs, everything else is downstairs.

At the moment, the office is working off WiFi, my server is wired to Horizon, and my PC is connected via homepugs.

Any ideas on a better setup?

It does, yeah. The lad on the phone informed that their wasn't.

Sending a rather long PM to the UPC Reps now..

That guy clearly has no idea what he's at. You can use a separate modem, you just need to get them to provision it(set it up) on their end. They do tend to charge an activation fee for the pleasure though. What you cant do is use an old modem, that wont be provisioned for your account any more.

Id get back onto them and hope for somebody more competent.

When you say your server is wired to horizon, is that a HTPC box in that room or are you running ethernet to the office? In any case homeplugs and then a switch maybe in the office would be good. Or you could get a separate modem from UPC as above and connect that at the left TV point, might be closer to hard wire to stuff there then.

I'm more wondering what I can do for better PC speed... Though at this point I guess the only option is running quite a bit of ethernet somewhere around the house... And I meant that my server is sitting right behind the Horizon box (and the TV).

Is the homeplug performance poor? Its not in an extension lead or anything? Worth checking out common causes of slowness with them first off. After that the options would be a length of cat6 cable or wireless AC maybe.

Bah, I rediscovered my good old love - CS. Played last two days had a lot of fun, but I noticed that my ping is dreadful. any server I join I got 120-150ping!!! freaking god awful! Joined Irish BF4 server and my ping was around 90 too. What the hell happening...

~Did speed test, but looks like my ping is not the worst!

I never payed much attention to it, so I dont know how good or bad it was before. What could be the issue lads?

Eircom have been having some sort of issues, see the broadband forum. Connections to certain parts of the UK are very poor at peak times, fine during the day.
