What's wrong with it I wonder?

Any weak points on those 6s?

My dads old 1993 Mazda 323 was the most reliable car you could ever imagine, same is true with one of these no?

Is the engine in this the one with the dephaser pulley issues. I know it was in one of the 1.6 petrol engines.

Mechanically very little goes wrong with them(the petrol versions that is), however a major weak point they have is poor rust protection.

Its an interesting car - and maybe some will say its too old.

But if you don't mind that - then I can't see why not.

To put it all into perspective - the early models of the 92 t0o 97 Corolla - are only a year newer then this.

Hard to imagine how a 93/94 Corolla would be significantly better as a daily driver then a good one of these - if one doesn't mind paying more on fuel or driving a bigger car.

Think we had this up before - although not with 13 months test if I recall.

    Nice car imo
A Corolla won't be as comfortable or as refined as one of those as it's a class or two below it.

However where a daily driver is concerned a Corolla will be cheaper to run and to tax and probably will be cheaper to maintain as well.

However if someone had a place to store that volvo it might make a good daily in six or seven years when it's eligible for vintage tax Imo.

You'd think one of the enthusiast owners of this volvo would of changed the fe*king number plates though :pac: they look well past their sell by date.

The 1.6 vvt's appear to be a bag of sh;te. The vvt was fitted to the megane and scenic. The 1.6 16v laguna II is luckily non vvt

100's of threads online about it.

Oh definitely - in terms of pure bangernomics the Corolla would be a better buy.

Its all relative, whats the benchmark. In America or Australia where big engines is order of the day it would be a small engined and economical car. Here not generally so, although in some circles it would still be, then some would consider it cheaper altogether to walk or pus bike.

What is economical though? I mean you buy that for €700 or buy a diesel passat from the same year for up to 5 times that money. Drive the Mazda right and in real life the passat will still only return 10, at best 15 mpg more on the devils juice which is nearly the same price as unleaded now anyway. That and the risk of something more costly going wrong along the way too probably. Anyway I'd know which option I'd be taking if I was after a run around. Mazda FTW unless I was covering astronomical mileage altogether and by astronomical I don't mean 25k miles p.a.

I think a diesel passat would do better than 10 to 15 more mpg compared to the mazda tbh.

On the engine front, a diesel passat from 04 will most probably have the ultra reliable 1.9 tdi engine so not much more to go wrong compared to the mazda Imo, their pretty maintenance friendly too as far as diesels are concerned.

bear in mind too that while those mazdas are very reliable , genuine main dealer parts are very expensive for them, so in the unlikely event that you will require parts be prepared to pay through the nose for them.

The price of that 6 though is pretty decent and no way would you get a good diesel passat for that money so on that front it's a winner. It must have high mileage though as the seller never put the miles in the ad.

Circa 32-35 mpg combined from the Mazda if you are cute about your driving? Do you really think you'd be getting much above 50mpg from the Passat in mixed driving in the real world? Maybe but I'd be somewhat skeptical. You'd still need to cover some considerable mileage before you'd draw in the potential difference in the initial outlay and begin to save money.

I do take your point though that parts can be extremely expensive for Mazda's. They were never hugely popular so you won't be finding loads of them in breakers yards either. Cousin has a 01' Mazda 626 and he paid through the nose a few times to fix what you'd assume would be straight forward simple problems.

Fair point too re the Passat engine. Probably the last of the more basic straight forward reliable diesel engines before the toucy feely ones that are common place these times

Have had a Passat on several occasions as a company cay, never got much better than an indicated 47mpg, mostly driven on motorway and main roads, rarely in town so I'd tend to agree about 50mpg being the stuff of dreams, that said there would be a very noticable difference between the Passat diesel giving 40ish mpg and any petrol giving 30ish, again I had a loan of an E280 for a while and wasn't slow about handing it back

True true bladespin. When I've heard guys rattling on about how their diesel Passat or Golf would return over 60mpg or run etc on the smell of diesel, all the while pulling a double decker bus blah blah blah etc I inwardly roll my eyes up in the air and outwardly say oh yeah thats great aint it.

Not sure what the E270 has to do with it all though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,525 ✭✭✭JohnBoy26

any way seeing as we are talking about mazdas Il post this. It's a little expensive at €1350 but it looks to have been religously maintained.

Just used as an example, used to get about 30mpg out of it driving like a saint, felt the pinch massively.

To be fair, the steering and seat look like they've done 104k to me, and not 200k. Also the inside door handle on the driver side looks to have little wear too.

Agreed, but it was very well looked after by the previous owner and he thinks its his old car too. He recognises the scratch over the wheel arch.
